SIMPP Members (1942-1958) SIMPP also welcomed William Cagney into the Society during its first year. As the business manager for his famous older brother James Cagney, William gave up his own acting career in 1934 to serve a similar purpose as Sydney Chaplin had for his younger brother Charlie. After the Cagneys battled against the studio system for years, the brothers organized Cagney Productions in 1942, and joined the independent movement. James Cagney Against the Studio System James Cagney began his Hollywood career at Warner Bros. in 1930 at the age of 30, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most difficult and independent-minded of the studio contract actors. He rode the studio's wave of gangster films to achieve near instant popularity, then fought for years to avoid being typecast in tough-guy roles by Warner. He complained about his journeyman salary and the factory-like conditions in the early 1930s, and voluntarily went on suspension in a much-publicized showdown with the studio, then an unprecedented move by a performer. His weekly salary was doubled to $3,000 when he returned to the studio in 1932. He then walked out on his contract again that same year in a disagreement largely sparked by block booking. After receiving word that his films were being used as the primary attraction in Warner Bros. movie blocks, he sought to punish the studio for profitably pre-selling his films by walking out on an unfinished picture called

His New York beginnings would give birth to many of the mannerisms that would make him famous, from the hitching of the pants to his unusual clipped speech, but his appeal would eventually extend far beyond those mean streets to the silver screen, where he would launch a career that would last for an astounding five decades. Amazon.com Widgets Born to a lower class family in 1899, young Jimmy would take on a host of odd jobs to help make ends meet, including his first foray into performing, just after WWI, when he worked as a female impersonator. While still in his early 20’s, he met and married the love of his life, Frances, and began touring in vaudeville before eventually landing on Broadway. His performance as a small time grifter in “Sinners’ Holiday” earned him a ticket to Hollywood to appear in the 1930 film version by Warner Brothers. Signed to a term contract, Cagney started off with supporting roles in films such as “Other Men’s Women” (1930) and “Smart Money” (1931). That same year he got his big break when he was cast as bootlegger Tom Powers in “The Public Enemy” . Cagney’s performance, including the now classic scene where he smashes a grapefruit into Mae Clark’s face, instantly rocketed him to stardom, while at the same time tagging him with a gritty, tough guy image that would prove hard to shake. Warners kept their newest star busy, rushing him into the back-to-back star vehicles “Taxi” (1932), “The Mayor of Hell” and “Lady Killer” (both 1933). He broke briefly from his tough guy image to portray a theatrical producer turned performer in 1933’s “Footlight Parade”, a role which enabled him to show off his dance skills.

James Cagney
One of the true Hollywood superstars, James Cagney is primarily known for playing gangsters; yet he was also a wonderful, idiosyncratic dancer who had precious few opportunities to show off his talents in musicals (although when he got the chance, he shined). Most of his career was spent at Warner Bros., where he was often among the top 10 male draws during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Cagney was born on New York City's Lower East Side in 1899. He was accepted into Columbia University but soon had to drop out because of lack of money. In desperation, he turned to show business hoping to make a living. He went on to appear as an actor-dancer on the vaudeville circuit throughout the early to mid-1920s, until he made it to Broadway. Slowly, he ascended the cast lists, finally becoming the second lead in Penny Arcade . It was his big break. The show was made into a Warner Bros. movie (retitled Sinner's Holiday , 1930), and he came with the package. As he said in his autobiography ( Cagney on Cagney ), "I came out (to Hollywood) on a three-week guarantee and I stayed, to my absolute amazement, for thirty-one years."

March 31, 1986 OBITUARY
James Cagney Is Dead at 86; Master of Pugnacious Grace
By PETER B. FLINT James Cagney, the cocky and pugnacious film star who set the standard for gangster roles in ''The Public Enemy'' and won an Academy Award for his portrayal of George M. Cohan in ''Yankee Doodle Dandy,'' died yesterday at his Dutchess County farm in upstate New York. He was 86 years old. Mr. Cagney had been hospitalized earlier this month at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. But his wife of 64 years, known as Willie, took him back to the familiar surroundings of his home just over a week ago. Mr. Cagney had an explosive energy and a two-fisted vitality that made him one of the great film personalities of Hollywood's golden age. An actor who could evoke pathos or humor, he invested scores of roles with a hungry intensity, punctuated by breathless slang, curling lips and spontaneous humor. A former vaudevillian and, in his youth, a formidable street fighter, the 5-foot-8 1/2-inch, chunky, red-haired actor intuitively choreographed his motions with a body language that projected the image of an eager, bouncy terrier. His walk was jaunty and his manner defiant. But along with his belligerence he displayed a comic zest in inventive, sometimes outrageous actions. He could play a hoofer as adeptly as a gangster, and whether brutish or impish, he molded a character that personified an urban Irish-American of irrepressible spirit.
