JAMES CAGNEY (17th July 1899 - 30th March 1986)
James Cagney was born in the Yorkville section of Manhatten, N.Y.. His father
was a bartender and amateur boxer. The latter, something the young Cagney
developed a life long passion for. As a youth, he had a fine reputation as a
fighter. He entered show buisness just after World War 1. A fellow employee at
Wanamakers told him a troupe of vaudevillians where auditioning singers and
dancers, and paying $35 a week. Cagney auditioned, and although he could neither
sing or dance, he got the job! Cagney stayed in vaudeville until 1929, when he moved to Broadway to star with
Joan Blondell in 'Penny Arcade'. This got him and Blondell an offer to go to
Hollywood for screen tests, winning him the role in the 1930 film 'Sinners Holiday'.
Although a very accomplished and versatile actor, Cagney is usually remembered as
the tough guy and gangster. A role he portrayed phenomenally in such movies as 'Angels With Dirty Faces', 'Public Enemy', 'White Heat' and 'The Roaring Twenties'. In 1942 he had the chance to change personae. He made the movie 'Yankee Doodle

Go to: CRAWFORD STANWYCK I n 1933, during the filming of Lady Killer (1933), Warners producer Darryl F. Zanuck sent a memo to his crew of writers in which he detailed the studio's requirements for the Cagney persona: "He has got to be tough, fresh, hard-boiled, bragginghe knows everything, everybody is wrong but himeverything is easy to himhe can do everything and yet it is a likeable trait in his personality."
James Cagney and Mae Clarke in Lady Killer
James Cagney as Tom Powers in Public Enemy
James Cagney as Tom Powers vs. Donald Cook as his brother in Public Enemy During the early 1930s, Cagney was all of this and more. His uptempo acting stylethe rat-a-tat-tat of his reedy voiceand his distinctly Irish-puck appearance, created a decidedly lower-East side aura. When he leaned into a room, fists clenched, he dominated the mise-en-scene like a careening car. His grincocky, self-assured, masculinesaid I'm better than you and I know it. And his roving eyes, stabbing stubby forefinger, and flexed body were a bunch of city lights, exploding like firecrackers. Cagney began work at Warners in a series of small roles before electrifying audiences as the indomitable Tom Powers in Public Enemy (1931). Cagney shows Powers's brash, cocky spirit, with body language that exudes energy and violent tempo. Walking down the back alleys to Putty's club, Cagney spins, spits, and pushes his "newsie" hat over his head with languor.

    A Tribute to James Cagney
This article was originally written to celebrate what would have been James Cagney's 100th birthday, and it would have been great to deliver birthday wishes to him while he was still with us. Because, for somebody who played so many hoods and tough characters during his career, Cagney was a truly nice guy. James Francis Cagney was born on the Lower East Side of New York. He worked a lot of jobs to get by, and his parents helped him pursue his goal of being an entertainer. By the time he was in his 20s he was starring on Broadway.

    http://www.meredy.com/cagney/
Welcome to James Cagney - One of a Kind
Click on the links for Cagney pics. I've long admired his cocky attitude and herky-jerky movements, the epitome of rough and tumble manhood. Cagney's energetic acting style with staccato delivery and raspy voice became synonymous with the Hollywood "tough guy" role. Will Rogers once said of him , "Every time I see him work, it looks to me like a bunch of firecrackers going off all at once." He was a Warner Brothers mainstay for many years as the studio was setting the standard for crime drama (gangster flicks). He made 38 films for Warners between 1930 and 1941. However, Mr. Cagney was not content to play just one kind of part and proved his versatility by portraying George M. Cohan in the musical Yankee Doodle Dandy , for which he won a well deserved Oscar for his singing and dancing, as well as his acting. He also was a great light comedian in such films as The Strawberry Blonde and The Bride Came C.O.D.. James Francis Cagney, Jr. , born on July 17, 1899, was the child of an Irish father and Norwegian mother and was raised on New York's Lower Eastside. He did many odd jobs to support his family.

    17th July 1899 - 30th March 1986
Actor of many gangster films who always portrayed the tough guy.
Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York. Picture of grave courtesy of David Zipperer of New York. James Francis Cagney was an American film actor.
In common with fellow American screen icon James Stewart, Cagney became so familiar to audiences that they usually referred to him as "Jimmy" Cagneya billing never found on any of his films. While technically incorrect, the use of the 'nickname' was a testimony to Cagney's impact.
Cagney was born in New York City to James Cagney Sr., an Irish American bartender and amateur boxer, and Carolyn Nelson; his maternal grandfather was a Norwegian ship captain while his maternal grandmother was an Irish American. The red-haired, blue-eyed Cagney graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City in 1918 and attended Columbia University.
Both his brother William Cagney, who was also a producer, and sister Jeanne Cagney were actors.
He worked in vaudeville and on Broadway, marrying the dancer Frances Willard (aka: "Billie") Vernon (1899 - 1994) on September 28, 1922 and remained faithfully married for 64 years. They adopted a son James Cagney Jr and a daughter Cathleen "Casey" Cagney. When Warner Brothers bought the film rights to the play Penny Arcade they took Cagney and his co-star Joan Blondell from the stage to the screen in the retitled Sinner's Holiday (1930), starring Grant Withers.
