Sondheim stands up for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd
By Ian Caddell "I've always been a movie buff," he says in a London hotel room. "But the one form of movie that I never particularly enjoyed was the movie musical.…It takes three or four minutes to sing a song, and on-stage that works because it's part of the texture of the story. But on film, you're just trying to waste time. "Take [the song] "Tonight" in West Side Story," he continues. "There's a close-up of him and a close-up of her, and then a two-shot, and then a shot of the fire escape.…The director must go crazy trying to figure out: 'What am I going to do for four minutes while they sing, "Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight?"' As far as I'm concerned, that's really boring." Happily, for fans of the hit musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sondheim is excited about the new film version of his play. He says that the story of a barber who murders wealthy Londoners and works with a pie maker to sell their remains to her customers, has fared well in the hands of director Tim Burton, who consulted with Sondheim on the film. (Sweeney Todd, which stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, opens on December 21 in Vancouver.)

by Staff Writer
Has been in relationship with Helena Bonham Carter since the year of 2001, it was not until recently that Tim Burton revealed that he's finally ready to marry her.
"Helena and I feel so married we never got around to doing it, but I'm thinking about it," Tim told Britain's Radio Times magazine, adding that "I'm a late bloomer."
First hooked up with the actress when he directed the 2001 science fiction film "Planet of the Apes" in which she starred, Tim and Helena have so far had two children together; son Billy-Ray Burton and daughter Indiana Rose Burton.
Before dating Tim, Helena was in a relationship with actor Kenneth Branagh and then briefly dated actors Rufus Sewell and Steve Martin
Dating Tim who is a famous film director notable for the quirky and gothic atmosphere of his films, Helena however made herself audition for the roles in his big screen projects because she didn't want to feel like she only got the part because she slept with him.

EDWARD: There are some fish that cannot be caught. It's not that they're faster or stronger than other fish. They're just touched by something extra. Call it luck. Call it grace. One such fish was The Beast. By the time I was born, he was already a legend. He'd taken more hundreddollar lures than any fish in Alabama. Some said that fish was the ghost of Henry Walls, a thief who'd drowned in that river 60 years before. Others claimed he was a lesser dinosaur, left over from the Cretaceous period
EDWARD: Now, you may well ask, since this lady fish wasn’t the ghost of a thief, why did it strike so quick on gold when nothing else would attract it? That was the lesson I learned that day, the day my son was born. He focuses his words on Sandra. This story is and has always been about her more than anyone. Sometimes, the only way to catch an uncatchable woman is to offer her a wedding ring.
EDWARD" What, a father’s not allowed to talk about his son?

BBC Interview With Tim Burton tml "[Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is] a movie about texture. That's what I remember from the original book, the feeling of the description and the textures. It was important for us to have them be real, and not be stuck in a blue room for six months. And a couple of the kids hadn't done movies or anything, so having real sets was really important." Anwar Brett, British Broadcasting Corporation Q. "Do you do anything special to tap into the creative spirit?" A. "You mean like communicating with a shrunken head or using a voodoo doll? I like to get in there and play around, but I have to be careful because I broke a rib on Planet of the Apes. I don't watch where I'm going, so I'm actually lucky to be alive. I get kind of hyper. The cameramen gave me a pedometer because I pace so much. In less than a month, I did 300 miles." Wired Magazine Corpse Bride

var sc_project=789643; var sc_invisible=0; var sc_partition=6; var sc_security="7b64f34e"; Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Cut Into Sweeney Todd by Jordan Riefe After teaming up to make six movies together, there's no denying Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have given fans a huge dose of eccentric, gothic, and often fanciful cinema. For their latest collaboration, Burton recruited Depp to play famous 19th century legend Sweeney Todd for his translation of the renowned dark, cannibalistic musical comedy Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street . At the film's recent press conference in London, we were on hand to get the goods on what dark goodies both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have in store for fans as Sweeney Todd readies for its theatrical release on December 21. Tim Burton on whether had any fear of casting Johnny Depp without initially hearing him sing: "I strangely didn’t. I had absolutely no idea if he could sing. He said, 'I thought I could do it.' I strangely had absolutely no fear of that whatsoever. I worry about a lot of things, but I strangely did not fear it at all. When I got beyond that I was - he exceeded my expectations. I was very lucky I didn’t go through any angst of that at all." Johnny Depp on preparing for the role of Sweeney Todd: "Like I told Tim, I didn’t know if I could sing. Likewise, I didn’t know it. I feel, because of my background in music, I could hit a note or two. I didn’t know if I could sustain a note or pull it off. I said to him, 'I think I can do it. Let me go off and try some stuff.' So I went off to a buddy’s studio, like a garage studio, and started to record the songs to see if I could get off the initial fear of that type of exposure. Did that and sent it to Tim and he felt we were going to be okay. Started to get more confident, and then the idea of me standing in front of a guy at a piano singing scales, it just seemed to me wrong. It doesn’t matter if you know how to sing, just sing. So, you know, that’s what I did. [Stephen] Sondheim was probably weeping."

While he kept much of the music, Burton did change, radically, the dramatic presentation of the original musical, deliberately turning it into a horror movie. Many skeptics of this film adaptation believe Burton could turn this into a truly horrible movie by casting so many non-singers in a musical: Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen and his own fianc© Helena Bonham Carter. Surprisingly, he cast them all before knowing if they could carry the tunes. "When I asked Johnny to do it and he said, 'Yeah, I think I can do it,' I didn't know if he could sing, but I knew him enough to know that if he didn't think he could do it, he wouldn't do it," Burton said. After Depp accepted the role, he promised to do a recording of his singing voice and send it to Burton to show him. For a long, long time Burton waited for the proof to arrive. "It took a while," he said. "I didn't hear anything from him for a while. He's very private. I let him go and do his thing and he sent me a thing and I listened and it exceeded my expectations."
