His year of birth is sometimes mistakenly given as 1960, most notably in his own books, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and the picture book of The Nightmare Before Christmas . Burton described his childhood self as quirky, self-absorbed and highly imaginative. As a child growing up in Burbank, he staged an axe murder with his brother to scare the neighbors, prompting them to call the police. He repeated the prank again with similar results. He found home life and school difficult, often escaping the reality of everyday life by watching horror and low budget films, to which he would later pay tribute in his biography of Edward D. Wood, Jr.

This page is a tribute to my favourite director. He may not be as critically acclaimed as some directors, but for visual style and originality he can't be beat. His opening title sequences are better than most whole movies! Plus I really relate to his characters. All of his films have a lot more going on under the surface than you first notice, so they actually get better on repeat viewings. For further information about Burton, check out the Tim Burton Collective Movies Tim Burton Should Have Made My Danny Elfman Page Pee-wee's Big Adventure The feature film that introduced us to the brilliant imagination of Burton is still one of the funniest 'children's films' ever made. And the most enjoyable search for a lost bicycle tale, of course. The road movie storyline is as basic as you can get, and mainly serves as the framework for a series of sketches and character vignettes. Paul Reubens plays the eponymous child/man Pee-wee Herman and manages to be far less annoying than you'd expect. As he travels across America we are treated to gentle satire on various character clichés (escaped criminal, lovelorn waitress) and cartoonish visuals, perfectly accompanied by Danny Elfman's fun score. Naturally, there's no message to this movie, but the humour is never condescending. Burton gently weaves in the sick and twisted attitude that would become one of his trademarks. The film also manages to mock Hollywood (the drive-in finale is priceless) and offers plenty of great visuals along the way.

After struggling through high school he went on to study animation at the California Institute of the Arts on a grant from Disney. He went on to work for the Walt Disney Studios on various animation projects including The Fox and the Hound and The Black Caldron After a few years Disney funded his first solo project, a short animated film titled “Vincent”. The short won Burton acclaim on the film festival circuit which in turn got him funding for his next project, a half hour live action short titled “Frankenweenie” which was a quirky spoof on the Frankenstein story. While “Frankenweenie” didn’t immediately take off, Paul Reubens, also known as Pee-wee Herman, liked it enough to offer Burton the role of director for his film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure . The film was an unsuspected hit and Burton found himself flooded with offers.
