Remembering Comedian George Burns
There was a time when George Burns was a giant in the entertainment world both as a single and, for and years before his death at age 100, with wife, Gracie Allen perhaps the best-known comedy duo in the business. On what would have been Burns' 112th birthday he is remembered today for his humor and wisdom.
George Burns' last visit here was June 7th, 1987 for a benefit for The Fox Chase Cancer Center. Cancer had recently claimed fellow comedian Jack Benny; one of Burns dearest friends. But, whenever Burns appeared comedy was never far away: Happy Birthday George Burns who would have been 112 on this date.

George Burns - Going In Style
By Laura Waskin He was an Academy Award-winning actor, comedian, dancer, singer, and best-selling author. He began his career around the turn of the century performing in a barbershop quartet (when it was all the rage), then moved on to vaudeville. One-reel shorts, then feature films followed. He graduated to a top-rated radio show for 17 years, a top-rated television show for another 8 years, and, finally, over the last 30 years of his life he played the Vegas clubs. Meanwhile he released record albums, appeared in top grossing movies, tv specials, and, oh yes, he still enjoyed a good cigar, a habit he picked up in 1910 when he was a teenager.
This January he celebrated his 100 th birthday, and then quietly passed into entertainment history on March 9, 1996.
th century. Most people did not have telephones at that time, and Henry Ford’s horseless carriage called the "Quadricycle"; was still just a novelty item. Rocket ships and space shuttles were nothing more than a glimmer in the imagination of Jules Verne. The frontier days of the American west were still fresh in people’s minds.
th
th birthday was his entrance into the world of show business. George decided to join a group of neighborhood boys and became a member of the Peewee Quartet. The youths performed anywhere from street corners to ferryboats and always had time to fit in a local talent contest or two, which they occasionally won. George continued to attend school while performing and completed the fourth grade. However, by now vaudeville called, and New York, was the perfect place for an ambitious young song and dance man to start.

(Just you and me Kid, 1979) Actually, it only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth. Retirement at sixty-five is ridiculous. When I was sixty five I still had pimples. When I was a boy the Dead Sea was only sick. Actually, it only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth. Everything that goes up must come down. But there comes a time when not everything that's down can come up. Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair. I can't afford to die; I'd lose too much money. It's hard for me to get used to these changing times. I can remember when the air was clean and sex was dirty.

George Burns
in Relationships
George Burns has frequent emotional outbursts due to his fiery temper and emotional impulsiveness. Burns expresses himself very directly and honestly and no one has to guess what his true feelings are. However, George Burns dislikes showing any personal weakness or his need for support, comfort and nurturing. He is often impatient with himself and others. George abhors emotional dependency and dislikes "complainers". George Burns inspires others to take positive action in their lives through his own enthusiasm and eagerness to meet life's challenges, and he is attracted to people who are adventurous, courageous and independent. George is rather bossy but does not like to be with people that he can boss around too much. He enjoys a good fight sometimes. Relationships that are built on mutual respect and emotional freedom are ideal for Burns. George Burns becomes very cross if he lacks vigorous physical activity. Burns feels his best if he frequently "does battle" on the tennis or racquetball court (or engages in another form of competitive sport).

George Burns: 'Fall in love with what you do ... It works'
Comic dies at 100
March 9, 1996
Web posted at: 5:30 p.m. EST From Correspondent Sherri Sylvester LOS ANGELES (CNN) George Burns a comedian, actor, singer, dancer died Saturday, just weeks after his 100th birthday. Ever-present cigars, afternoon naps, bridge with his buddies and a couple of martinis each day saw Burns through those 100 years. He also credited his longevity to this philosophy:
"Fall in love with what you do for a living. I don't care what it is. It works." (51K AIFF sound or 51K WAV sound)
George Burns
He did what he loved for 93 years. He was Nathan Birnbaum when he began, playing the streets of New York in the Peewee Quartet. Born into a family of 12 children, he supported them with his show business earnings until after his father died. Burns was still in vaudeville when he met Gracie Allen. He took the name George Burns and the two became a team. (145K AIFF sound or 145K WAV sound) "We were what you call a disappointment act," Burns explained in a 1991 interview. "If an act got sick, we'd take their place." That lasted for about two months, until Burns and Allen took over for an act at the Bushwick Theater in Brooklyn...and stayed. They remained together as a comedy act, and as husband and wife after marrying in 1926 and raising two children.

Goodnight, George! ~
The World's Best-loved Cigar Smoker Takes His Final Bow

[Published in The Pipe Smoker’s Ephemeris , Edited by Tom Dunn, Winter-Summer 1996.]
By Henry Zecher
As George Burns told the story, smoking a cigar was what saved his life the day he was born, which he remembered very well because he was there at the time.
According to George, he made his entrance singing: "The doctor held me up by my heels and kept slapping me, but I wouldn't stop until I finished two choruses of Red Rose Rag . Then when I started singing My Gal Is a High-Toned Lady he put me in the incubator and turned off the heat. If I hadn't been smoking a cigar, I might have frozen to death."
When George was born Nathan Birnbaum on January 20, 1896, on the Lower East Side of New York City, there were people still living who remembered Andrew Jackson. He was two years old when Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill, where they found George at the top smoking a cigar. He and the Peewee Quartet were already singing for a living when the Wright Brothers achieved motorized flight. He was a 19-year-old vaudeville hoofer when e equaled ; a 49-year-old radio star telling wife Gracie to say goodnight when the atomic age began; and a 73-year-old never-was when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. He joked about being older than most countries, but he was old enough to vote when the Bolsheviks overran Russia in 1917, and was seen performing on satellite when the Soviet Block fell 74 years later.

Humor as a topic is an exhaustive one. We can study what makes us laugh, why it does so, and the role of comedy in our cultures. Andy Nulman's book I Almost Killed George Burns! explains how humor is manufactured, packaged, and delivered to the masses. Nulman, the 15-year CEO of the Canadian comedy festival Just For Laughs, fills his book with anecdotes of his life, the origins of the fest, its inner workings, and, of course, some of the dirty details of the lives and egos of comedians and how they operate both on and off the stage. Just as when a joke is explained to death, humor loses its appeal when it is too self-congratulatory and smug, and this is the main issue at hand with Nulman's book. While I Almost Killed George Burns is surely full of interesting and humorous anecdotes about running a comedy festival, Nulman operates on a level where he assumes that his readers are familiar with him and the festival. He begins his second chapter confessing that this is a weakness: “I always presumed that whomever I was speaking to knew about Just For Laughs,” and then proceeds to question why one would bother buying the book if they were not familiar with it, which is a defeatist attitude. If Nulman marketed his book solely as one about comedy, or about putting together a comedy festival, this would be a non-issue. However, he practically insists upon focusing solely upon himself and Just For Laughs, only tossing in titillating but disappointingly brief anecdotes about the stars themselves, the comedians.

George Burns
One of the best-known couples in Hollywood history, the husband-and-wife comedy team of "Burns and Allen" began on the New York stage and became an unparalleled success in radio, television and feature films. Gracie Allen' s high-pitched voice and scatterbrained comedic persona were balanced by George Burns' mentally nimble straightman and their chemistry made a hit out their popular radio weekly, "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show."
Later inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame, the program was one of the first shows to make the successful transition from radio to television. On the CBS network "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" ran for an amazing 239 episodes and garnered 12 Emmy nominations. Each episode ended with a George Burns and Gracie Allen dialog reminiscent of their vaudeville routines with Burns asking Allen to, "Say goodnight, Gracie," to which Allen would obligingly turn to their audience and reply, "Goodnight, Gracie."
After their 38-year marriage ended in Gracie's passing, George Burns recreated his career and became known for his roles in "Oh, God!", "Going in Style," and at the age of eighty George Burns became the oldest recipient of an Oscar for his role in "The Sunshine Boys" opposite Walter Matthau, also a client of The Roger Richman Agency, Inc. Burns was the author of ten books and also won a Grammy at the age of 79. In addition to being identified by his trademark cigar and televised specials for his 90th, 95th and 100th Birthday Parties, George Burns was a Kennedy Center Honoree and a fixture at the legendary Friars Club Roasts.
