Comedian George Burns (January 20, 1896 - March 9, 1996) was a legendary American vaudeville comedian who went on to work in movies, radio, and early television. He was born as Nathan Birnbaum to Louis and Dorothy Birnbaum, the ninth of twelve children, in New York City, New York. Burns teamed with his second wife Gracie Allen as "Burns & Allen"; they built their routines and their television sitcom around situations where she said (and did) ditsy things and he made wry comments as asides to the audience, often while brandishing a cigar or golf club. Gracie retired due to poor health in 1958 and died in 1964. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? In the 1930s the couple adopted two children: Sandra Jean and Ronald "Ronnie" John; when Ronnie was grown, he joined the cast of his parents' 1950-1958 Monday-night television show on CBS, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show After Allen's death, many considered Burns a "has been" until he co-starred with Walter Matthau in the 1975 movie adaptation of Neil Simon's hit play

George Burns, born Nathan Birnbaum, was the ninth of twelve children born to Louis and Dorothy (Bluth) Birnbaum in New York City. His father was a substitute cantor at the local synagogue, but did not work very often. During the flu epidemic of 1903, Louis had his chance to earn some real money, but contracted the flu and died. Nattie (as he was known to his family) started working in 1903 after his father's death, shining shoes, running errands, and selling newspapers. Source: store.nexternal.com George Burns was born Nathan Birnbaum on January 20, 1896, the ninth of twelve children of an Orthodox Jewish family. The Birnbaums, recent immigrants from Eastern Europe, lived on New York City's impoverished lower East Side. His father was a cantor (a painfully out-of-tune one, according to Burns's account), who worked as a last-minute substitute at various New York synagogues. Source: answers.com

BURNS, GEORGE U.S. Comedian/Actor/Singer George Burns moved in the course of his lengthy career from serving as a vaudeville straight man to being one of the grand old men of American show businessand an expert on the history of entertainment in the United States. The television program he shared with his wife, comedienne Gracie Allen, for eight years (1950 to 1958 on CBS) was central to Burns' professional life, chronologically and symbolically. According to accounts of his early life (all of which originate from Burns himself), he was drawn to show business as a small child, singing on street corners with friends for pennies, and never seriously considered any other calling. Burns floundered in vaudeville for years, changing his act with great frequency, until he met Allen in 1922 (or 1923; accounts vary), and the couple inaugurated the straight-man/"Dumb Dora" pairing they would enact for more than four decades. The team moved successfully into film and radio in the early 1930s and finally into television in October 1950. In The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show

Photo from Houston Chronicle, page 1D, Jan. 18, 1996: "100 Facts about Centenarian George Burns" by Andy Edelstein of Newsday. On January 20, 1896, Nathan Birnbaum was born destined to become George Burns, one of this Nation's greatest comedic performers and a centenarian. Why did he reach his destiny and others did not? No one can say for sure. But he did have three good things going for him: he had a great set of genes; a great sense of humor; and a great capacity to never give up working, never give up loving, and never say never. While many of us may not be as lucky as the late Mr. Burns was in the "good genes" department, we can, nevertheless, learn from him and develop a good sense of humor and never say never. And while our lives might not be as long as his, they can be as rich and rewarding. Well, those are questions for another time. For now we celebrate George Burns' 100th year of life and salute him for all the good times he gave us. We also thank him for so ably demonstrating how older people improve the quality of our lives.
