Executive summary: The Carol Burnett Show Carol Burnett's parents were alcoholics, and her earliest memories are of their screaming, drunken fights. Her father abandoned the family when she was eight, and she and her mother moved in with Burnett's loving but eccentric maternal grandmother, a hypochondriac subject to "hissy fits." Burnett's mother soon faded from the family into the bottle, leaving Burnett to be raised by her grandmother. They became very close, and Burnett's famous "ear-tug" gesture, offered at the end of all her live performances and on her famous TV series, began as a silent signal to her grandmother, meaning "Everything is OK." She started in show business as an occasional stage actress, sometimes nightclub singer, and more often a hatcheck girl. After a few years barely making ends meet, 22-year-old Burnett first appeared on television in 1955, playing the dummy's romantic interest in 13 episodes of The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show , a kids' program that aired on Saturday mornings (Winchell was a ventriloquist, Mahoney was his dummy). At 23, she was cast as

BURNETT, CAROL U.S. Comedienne The many honors awarded Carol Burnett attest to the approbation of her peers and the love of her public. Carol Burnett has been Outstanding Comedienne for the American Guild of Variety Artists five times and recipient of five Emmys. She received TV Guide ' s nod as Favorite Female Performer for three consecutive years in the early 1960s, along with a Peabody award in 1963. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences proclaimed her Woman of the Year; a Gallup Poll found her to be one of America's 20 Most Admired Women in 1977. She has eight Golden Globes, twelve People's Choice Awards, the first National TV Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance, the first Ace Award for Best Actress, and the Horatio Alger Award, conferred by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. The latter is, in many ways, most significant, as Burnett's personal style and endearing "everywoman" qualities resulted from a life filled with emotional abuse and the ravages of poverty. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1985. Her grandmother wanted her to go to secretarial school, with the objective of marrying a rich executive. Burnett wanted college, and a degree in journalism. The odds were slim against her finding tuition and carfare of over fifty dollars at a time when the family's rent was thirty-five dollars per month. When an anonymous donor placed a fifty dollar bill in the mailbox, she enrolled at University of California, Los Angeles, quickly switching from journalism to theater arts. Eventually, she joined a musical comedy/opera workshop where she honed her skills in characterization, comic music, and acting. She became a campus star. But her family's poverty made her dreams of moving to New York City and playing on Broadway seem unattainable. A performance at a professor's home in a skit from the musical

by Billy Ingram No question, the most successful variety show of all-time has to be The Carol Burnett Show (CBS 1967-1978) - but one variety show failure almost derailed Carol Burnett's amazing career before it really got underway. Carol Burnett got her start in off-Broadway theatre, first achieved national attention with a novelty tune entitled "I Made A Fool Of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" (Eisenhower's prim Secretary of State - don't ask), then made her way to television via appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show Burnett's first regular series role was on a sitcom called 'Stanley' (Sept. 1956 - March 1957) - one of those early TV shows with a high-quality pedigree that failed to catch on. In Stanley , Buddy Hackett starred as the lackadaisical manager of a hotel lobby newsstand/ticket agency in New York City, and Carol Burnett played his loopy girlfriend Celia. Writers and producers from Sid Caesar's 'Your Show of Shows' were behind the production - produced and directed by Max Liebman, with playwrite Neil Simon on the writing staff. This NBC sitcom (broadcast live) barely lasted one season. During the run of Stanley , Burnett did a guest shot on the Garry Moore Show (1950-1958), a popular daytime variety program on CBS. This led to Burnett's next big break - as a regular player on the prime-time

She attended college at the University of California in Los Angeles. Her Broadway debut was in 1959, in the musical Once Upon a Matress. After appearing in several Broadway shows, Burnett became a regular on the CBS-TV variety show The Garry Moore Show from 1959 to 1962. She also appeared on CBS specials with other stars of musical theater, including a memorable performance singing duets with Julie Andrews. She soon had her own comedy-variety show on CBS, The Carol Burnett Show, which ran from 1967 to 1979. In a signal that became one of her trademarks, she always ended the show with a tug on her earlobe as a greeting to her family. Burnett's feature films include Pete 'n' Tillie (1972), Annie (1982), and the TV movie Friendly Fire (1979). She brought her variety show back to TV for a brief run in 1991, with the new title Carol and Company. From 1963 to 1982, Burnett was married to TV producer Joe Hamilton. They had three daughters, Carrie, Jody, and Erin. Bibliography: Wendy Brabner, ed., Texas Monthly Texas Characters Datebook 1985 (Austin, Texas: Texas Monthly Press, 1984).

The show relied on funny accents, slapstick and just-plain-shtick (there's no reason Mrs. Wiggins' sharpening her pencil should have been so funny; it just was). But what carried it was the good-feeling chemistry between the cast and the versatility of the star, a charming redhead who packed a mighty Tarzan yell. The Carol Burnett Show
T he Carol Burnett Show was a sketch comedy television show starring Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. It ran on CBS from 1967 to 1978. The popular variety show made the stars household names with such hilarious sketches as "As the Stomach Turns", "Went with the Wind" (a parody of Gone with the Wind featuring a memorable scene with Burnett as Scarlett O'Hara in the dress made from a window curtain, complete with rod), "Carol & Sis", "Mrs. Wiggins", "The Family", "Nora Desmond" (Burnett's send-up of Gloria Swanson's character in Sunset Boulevard), and "Stella Toddler." With such famous guest stars as Roddy McDowall, Cher, Vincent Price, Dinah Shore, the Jackson 5, Lucille Ball, Shirley MacLaine, Lily Tomlin (and many more) appearing weekly to bring entertainment into the living rooms of Americans all over the country, the long-running show was nominated for many Emmys and won quite a few. Burnett went on to star in movies, write a Broadway play, and continues to make appearances. Conway and Korman travel to do comedy routines all over the country. Vicki Lawrence had a U.S. #1 hit record in 1973 ("The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia") and went on to star in several shows of her own (the popular spin-off Mama's Family and her short-lived talk show, Vicki) and continues to perform around America doing comedy sketches of her own.
