Summary
Full Synopsis:
A hard-drinking, hard-living cop assigned the task of transporting a small-time criminal to the nearby courthouse finds that a simple, 16-block drive can be the longest ride of his life in director Richard Donner 's urban action thriller. Hung-over, has-been cop Jack Mosley ( Bruce Willis ) has seen better days, and all that the force expects out of him these days is to stay out of trouble while he's on the clock. Eddie Bunker ( Mos Def ) is set to testify before a grand jury at 10:00 a.m., and it's up to Mosely to make sure that Bunker makes it to the courthouse in one piece a job that Mosely estimates will take a maximum of 15 minutes. A black van has been trailing the pair unnoticed, though, and after stopping off at a nearby liquor store to pick up some breakfast, Mosely emerges from the store just in time to save Eddie from the lethal bullet of a determined assassin. When backup arrives in the form of Detective Frank Nugent ( David Morse ), Mosely quickly realizes that the detective on Nugent's team is the same cop that Bunker is set to testify against. Now faced with the tough task of dodging bullets and eluding a massive onslaught of corrupt cops, Mosely must keep Bunker alive long enough to get him before the judge and ensure that justice is served. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

, by Cynthia Robins When the video team first met Eddie Bunker, he was being held at Terminal Island, California. Subsequently paroled, he became a regular fixture on the set as Hoffman's right hand man, consultant and bit player. With Bunker were several ex-convicts bank robbers upon whom Hoffman relied for verisimilitude during the movie's bank robbery sequences. Documentary Director Colmano said the whole experience was like 'a school for criminals. The consensus among the bank robbers was that it should take no longer than one minute to get into the bank, get the money and get out,' he continued, explaining that the location was an actual bank on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. While shooting the scene the first time which took the required minute Hoffman removed some of the $50,000 in real money from the cash drawer incorrectly and triggered an actual alarm in a Los Angeles police station. It took four minutes for the cops to arrive, guns at the ready. Said Colmano, 'I expected those guys (the ex-cons) to be taking mental notes'.

Mr. Blue and the Fatal Circle
By JOSHUA A. That belief assumes responsibility, but the degree of responsibility varies from individual to individual. And if we are not... 51. Book Review: Steel Toes, By Eddie Little
A lot of people are going to compare eddie Little with Edward bunker (if they haven t already.) After all, they re both ex con crime writers.

Book Review: Steel Toes, by Eddie Little Rating: 9 out of 10
Book Title : Steel Toes
Writer: Eddie Little
Publisher : LA Weekly Books
Edition : First Edition: November 2001 (Hardcover)
ISBN # I got the first edition hardcover of Steel Toes , by Eddie Little for a birthday present. Normally I would've waited for the softcover, because I didn't think its prequel, Another Day in Paradise , was worthy of the extra money for the hardcover in order to get at it immediately. I did however underestimate Little's progress as writer. If you bought Another Day in Paradise , don't wait for Steel Toes to come out in softcover. Get it now. A truck could hit you, you could die of Anthrax and now that Bush pulled out of the ABM treaty, maybe the Russians will nuke you who knows? Pay the extra buck and read the damn thing now in case you die. It's worth the extra money. I don't mean to dis Another Day in Paradise . I wouldn't even think about reading Steel Toes if Another Day in Paradise wasn't a good book. In fact I recommend that you read it before

Stark is a rat and a con-artist. Nobody’s friend. The kind of guy Eddie Bunker met in San Quentin. Stark thinks he can beat the suckers and outsmart the cops. When a big score comes his way, he’s lucky to escape with his life. Four others are not so lucky.
STARK was Eddie Bunker’s first novel, and it was never published during his life time.
Jennifer Steele, Bunker’s widow, has written an Epilogue to STARK . The novel is as tough as Eddie, himself, was at the time.
From the Afterword to STARK by Jennifer Steele:
I was completely taken aback when Nat Sobel, Eddie’s book agent asked me to write this brief background to Eddie’s last (and first) novel. I protested that he should write it. After all, wasn’t he (like a modern times Maxwell Perkins) the one who resurrected it? Calling me to see what unfinished work remained, locating the manuscript in a publisher’s office outside of London, stitching it together, finding a new publisher? He disagreed. And after thinking about it, I suppose he’s right in that, perhaps, I am the only one that could know the details surrounding STARK
My relationship with Eddie spanned thirty years. Prison, half way house counselor, wife for 20 years, mother of his son, and always his close friend. It would be safe to say that I heard all of his “stories.” As he wrote in a letter to me in 1996, “My beloved—and best friend… if my life is adjudged a plus, it is because I have my private angel to give me a haven and at least enough peace to work.” I write this, then, as the “beloved and best friend” of the not-so distant past; and as the mother of his son. It’s really an honorto once again, assist in whatever way, so that his work can be brought to life again.

Edward Bunker
"When you're not locked up, you're locked out..."
interviewed by Ron Hogan Edward Bunker knows the criminal world with an immediacy that other crime writers can only dream about. For nearly thirty years, beginning at the age of eleven, Bunker was in and out of state and federal correctional facilities. It was during his first stay in San Quentin, as a teenager, that he first discovered the power of literature and became determined to make it as a writer, one of the few legal career choices his criminal record would allow him to pursue. His first novel, No Beast So Fierce , was published in 1973 while Bunker was doing time at Marion for attempted bank robbery. Paroled in 1975 in large part because of his literary talent, Bunker has spent the last twenty-two years devoting himself to writing novels and screenplays, with the occasional acting job here and there (younger readers, in fact, will recognize him more easily as Mr. Blue from Reservoir Dogs than as a writer). His fourth novel, Dog Eat Dog , was released in hardcover in 1996, followed a year later by the reissue of Little Boy Blue , which had been out of print for over a decade. William Styron identifies

From the "People" Archives: INTERVIEW: Steve Buscemi Does Time; Directing "Animal Factory" by Suzanne Ely (indieWIRE/ 11.3.00) If anything, Steve Buscemi is a study in contrasts. Throughout his career, Buscemi has balanced roles in archetypal independent films like " Reservoir Dogs Fargo " and " Living in Oblivion " with acting gigs in big-budget productions like " Con Air " and " 28 Days ." Buscemi pulls off comedy and drama, brutal violence and subtle emotion with equal aplomb. He's soft-spoken and sometimes even hesitant, but Buscemi isn't afraid to take on difficult subject matter in his films. Even while he is busy carving out a niche as one of the hardest working actors in independent film, Buscemi is still looking for new challenges. In 1996, he added writer/director to his feature film resume with the critically acclaimed " Trees Lounge ." For his second directorial feature, Buscemi has chosen an adaptation of Edward Bunker 's gritty " The Animal Factory ," the story of a young man's (Eddie Furlong) initiation into the fractured world of prison life.

A LOSER LIKE ME
Independent, The (London) Nov 28, 1999 by James Dalrymple THE HOTEL where I had arranged to meet Eddie Bunker was on the King's Cross Road. And from the big plate-glass window of the bar you didn't have to look very hard to see that nothing changes in this part of London. The do-gooders and the cops launch one clean-up campaign after another, but the kind of commerce that has found a natural home here seems as ageless and indestructible as original sin.

But beneath the punk in Eddie lies a man committed to turning his life around and constantly searching for signs that will lead him to a brighter future. Jack knows better, though people dont change.
