IMG/Organism Details Photo credit: Erin Gontang Salinispora tropica strain CNB-440 (DSM 44818) is a seawater-requiring marine actinomycete that produces the anticancer agent salinosporamide A. Salinispora tropica (strain CNB-440) belongs to a group of high G+C bacteria commonly known as the actinomycetes. These bacteria have the remarkable distinction of accounting for approximately 70% of the naturally derived antibiotics used today for clinical applications (Berdy, 2005). The genus Salinispora is distinct from other actinomycetes however in that it resides in ocean sediments and is the first bacterium of its type to require seawater for growth (Mincer et al., 2002) thus providing opportunities to study marine adaptations in Gram-positive bacteria. To date, three closely related Salinispora species have been cultivated, of which two have been formally described (Maldonado et al., 2005). These species share a high level of 16S rRNA gene sequence identity (99%) and form a well-resolved clade within the Micromonosporaceae indicating that the fine-scale phylogenetic architecture observed within some bacterial lineages can have taxonomic significance. We have observed that at least two species co-occur at all sampling sites, which supports the hypothesis that speciation is due to ecological differentiation as opposed to geographical isolation (Jensen and Mafnas, 2006). Since this project includes the sequencing of a second Salinispora species, comparative genomics can be used to resolve the genetic basis for physiological differences between closely related bacteria and ultimately to test the application of various species concepts to a well-defined set of environmental bacteria.

Topic Posted by: Suze Date Posted: Tue Apr 24 20:14:42 2007 Additional Comments: Kind-a surprised this hasn't been mentioned, but out here in the soaphood, persistant rumors are circulating that the final episode of Passions will have a connection to Another World. The scoop is that Passions's production staff are pursuing one or two actors from Another World to appear on the show's finale.  And, although one actress eagerly accepted, she wasn't the show's first choice.  The producers are supposedly still attempting to negotiate with their first choice, despite the fact that she literally hung-up on them.  Not sure I am crazy about connecting Passions to Another World.  What ever they do, I hope they show deep respect to both shows. Volume 17, Number 4 Sep 1993 The Future of Preservation Education: Notes from the PI Institute by Andrew Hart The author is Preservation Intensive (PI) Institute Assistant Coordinator. The Preservation Intensive Institute, an NEH-supported continuing education program held for the first time this summer, was an experiment in preservation education. Recognizing the need for advanced level programs in library and archival preservation, five schools of library and information science have collaborated to produce a series of one-week institutes, held at a different participating institution each summer. The first PI Institute drew preservation managers from across the country to the University of Pittsburgh during the first week of August, 1993. Participants in the PI Institute represented university libraries, state archives, museum libraries, and regional networks. Each came to the Institute with expertise in preservation, whether gained through formal training or years of working experience. The significance of prior skill level among participants was twofold. First, a relatively high skill level enabled classes of a more advanced and focused nature than are usually allowed by summer workshops. Second, the collective experience of the group provided an excellent opportunity to brainstorm about the future of preservation education. This article will focus on the second facet.

hookEvent("load", sajax_onload); Tracy Mincer From OpenWetWare Jump to: navigation search As the field of environmental microbiology grows it is clear that microbes represent the not-so-silent majority of life on earth, balancing the biochemical and geochemical budgets and the basis for support of all life on the planet. The fact that things so small can influence processes so big has always fascinated me. My interests are unified by the overarching questions: “What are the in situ selective pressures on microbial life?” and “How does this network of microorganisms determine environmental stoichiometry and influence higher planetary processes?” Many key processes in the nitrogen cycle, including ammonia oxidation, nitrite oxidation, nitrogen fixation and denitrification, are unique to Bacteria and Archaea. As a post-doctoral researcher in the DeLong Lab I have recently employed genomic and bioinformatic tools to investigate nitrification in the marine environment. Nitrification is an aerobic, two-step process performed by separate microbes, where ammonium is oxidized to nitrite by beta or gamma-proteobacterial groups and nitrite is further oxidized to nitrate by discrete members of the alpha-, gamma-, or delta-proteobacteria, or Nitrospira species. Until recently, the only microbes known to be capable of autotrophic ammonia oxidation were specific clades found within the beta and gamma-proteobacteria. Several new lines of evidence, however, have suggested a role for marine planktonic crenarchaea in the autotrophic oxidation of ammonia.

This is a regularity in search of a theory. Drawing on the principles of self-organized criticality, I propose an agent-based model of war and state formation that exhibits power-law regularities. The computational findings suggest that the scale-free behavior depends on a process of technological change that leads to contextually dependent, stochastic decisions to wage war.
