BROWN, ROBERT (1773-1858), botanist, was born on 21 December 1773, the son of Rev. James Brown, an Episcopalian, and his wife Helen, n©e Taylor. He attended Montrose Academy, proceeded to Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland, as Ramsay scholar in 1787, moved with his family to Edinburgh in 1789 and studied medicine at the university. He did not take a degree but showed special interest in natural history. In 1795 he was commissioned in the Fifeshire Regiment of Fencibles as surgeon's mate. He accompanied the regiment to Northern Ireland, where he remained until 1800 and took every opportunity to study natural history. While in London on recruiting service he met Jonas Dryander, librarian to Sir Joseph Banks , and through him in November 1798 became an associate of the Linnean Society. Since military life was not to his taste, Brown allowed his name to be submitted to Banks as a naturalist to accompany

Welcome to the web site of Robert Brown MSP
This site is designed to give news and information about the issues that I am involved in as Liberal Democrat MSP for Glasgow Region. My Regional constituency covers both the City of Glasgow itself, and the communities of Rutherglen and Cambuslang. I have taken up an enormous number of issues since the Scottish Parliament first met in May 1999.
  • Some arise from my long-standing interest in housing - homelessness, housing maintenance, fuel poverty and support for Housing Associations and community ownership. Some are Glasgow area issues - flooding in the East End, Glasgow airport rail link and Crossrail, hospital changes, funding for local groups.

biography
Born Robert Brown in April 1948, California native Reb Brown attended USC on a football scholarship, following graduation from high school in 1966. After stints as a bouncer and an amateur boxer, Brown was discovered by a talent scout. He has acted in many films and TV shows since the early 1970s, starring in comedies, horror, science fiction, war films, and dramas. His first film was SSSSSSS (1973; with Strother Martin and Heather Menzies). Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Brown acted in number of films and TV shows and starred as Captain America in two late 1970s made-for-television films. Reb Brown wasn't the first actor to portray Captain America. In 1944, Dick Purcell starred in a fifteen-chapter Republic serial of the same name. Sadly, at about the time of the release of the serial, Purcell died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 35. In 1992, a new Captain America was lensed, with Matt Salinger taking the lead role.

Robert Brown and the Cell Nucleus
n the year 1833 a further insight into the nature of the ultimate particles of plants was gained through the observation of the English microscopist Robert Brown, who, in the course of his microscopic studies of the epidermis of orchids, discovered in the cells "an opaque spot," which he named the nucleus. Doubtless the same "spot" had been seen often enough before by other observers, but Brown was the first to recognize it as a component part of the vegetable cell and to give it a name. "I shall conclude my observations on Orchideae," said Brown, "with a notice of some points of their general structure, which chiefly relate to the cellular tissue. In each cell of the epidermis of a great part of this family, especially of those with membranous leaves, a single circular areola, generally somewhat more opaque than, the membrane of the cell, is observable. This areola, which is more or less distinctly granular, is slightly convex, and although it seems to be on the surface is in reality covered by the outer lamina of the cell. There is no regularity as to its place in the cell; it is not unfrequently, however, central or nearly so. "As only one areola belongs to each cell, and as in many cases where it exists in the common cells of the epidermis, it is also visible in the cutaneous glands or stomata, and in these is always doubleone being on each side of the limbit is highly probable that the cutaneous gland is in all cases composed of two cells of peculiar form, the line of union being the longitudinal axis of the disk or pore.

Brown is interested in using algebraic and statistical methods to study a wide range of equilibrium and nonequilibrium problems. With collaborator Dr. Mikael Ciftan, Dr. Brown has developed new Monte Carlo Langevin equation-based techniques that allow dynamic/nonequilibrium and static/equilibrium phenomena to be studied on the same footing. His recent work includes algebraic and computational studies in dynamic and static critical phenomena in quantum optics and magnetism. In earlier work, Dr. Brown also developed a generalized (non-muffin-tin) stationary multiple scattering theory including applications to band theory and quantum chemistry. This work formally eliminates the muffin-tin approximation from KKR-type band theory and its equivalents in quantum chemistry, without the need for so-called "near field" corrections.

Chaos! Madness!! Insanity!!! ...
Panic on the street of Minneapolis . Well, maybe not "panic," exactly, but click around a few of the cameras to see real-time near-whiteout, absolutely lousy traffic conditions throughout the day today.
And, yes, the irony is not lost on me that while I'm inclined to berate the local media for "breathlessly" reporting that there's snow in Minnesota, I'm hopelessly, helplessly fascinated with the stuff myself. Gonna get out of the office early today so I can take four times longer than normal to get home. By RKB on December 4, 2007 3:10 PM
