    Robert Brown (1773-1858)
Acknowledged as the leading British botanist to collect in Australia during the first half of the 19th century. Studied medicine and joined the army as a sugeon in 1795. One of the scientists who accompanied Flinders on his historic voyage to chart the coast of Australia, leaving Britain in December 1801 and ending in Sydney in June 1803. Brown stayed in Australia until May 1805. He published the results of his collecting in his famous " Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae " in 1810. He succeeded Dryander as Banks ' librarian, and on Banks' death in 1820 inherited his library and herbarium. This was transferred to the British Museum where Brown became the first Keeper of the Botanical Department.

Brown Robert
By Terry Carr

Arthur Leacock shuffled quickly down the wooden hall of the small midwestern university where he had worked for thirty-two years and eight months, give or take maybe a week. His sleep-rumpled, peppery hair stuck out from under the old leather cap which he had worn for fully seventeen of those years, and his oft-resoled shoes were almost silent in the hallway, though its echoing properties were so good that Arthur had often fancied he could hear his own breathing whispered back to him from the walls.
He turned right at the large waiting room in the middle of the building and went up the stairs to the second floor two at a time, grasping the handrail with large-knuckled hands to pull himself along. He did not look where he was going, but instead rested his eyes unseeingly on the stairs passing beneath him, his mouth drawn back into the heavy wrinkles of his cheeks.

Associate Professor, Analytical Chemistry
B.S., 1978, University of Massachusetts at Lowell Ph.D., 1983, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Postdoctoral Research Associate, 1983-1987, University of California at Riverside Curriculum Vitae Our research is primarily concerned with studies aimed at improving the analysis of large, nonvolatile molecules by mass spectrometry. This involves research into fundamental ionization processes of large molecules and development of new instrumentation for mass spectrometry. Our principle ionization technique involves the use of high powered pulsed lasers (laser desorption) to effect ionization of a wide range of molecule classes. These include biologically relevant molecules such as peptides, proteins and glycoproteins, oligonucleotides, DNA fragments and synthetic commercial polymers. Mass analysis is carried out via time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. TOF mass spectrometers are well suited for pulsed laser ionization sources and provide both good mass resolution and mass accuracies. TOF mass spectrometers also combine very high sensitivity with an extended mass range for analyte analysis. Intact biomolecules, such as antibodies with molecular weights in excess of 150,000 are easily analyzed via TOF mass spectrometry with sensitivities typically in the femtomole range. In order to both volatilize and ionize such large molecules, a small quantity (typically 1-10 picomoles) of analyte (for example a

Numbers in square brackets refer to the notes at the end of the text. Introduction He intended to continue his course for a PhD but a major turning point in his career occurred when he was interviewed during his first postgraduate year by Sir Henry Tizard, Rector of Imperial College. Hanbury explained to Tizard that he was following up some original work by Van der Pol on oscillator circuits without inductance and hoped ultimately to combine an interest in radio with flying. In fact, Tizard had already challenged him about the amount of time he spent flying with the University of London Air Squadron. Tizard told Hanbury to see him again in a year's time and that he might then have a job for him. In fact, within three months Tizard accosted Hanbury and said he had an interesting research project in the Air Ministry for him. After an interview by R. A. Watson-Watt, Hanbury was offered a post at the Radio Research Board in Slough. His visit to Slough was brief; he was soon told to report to Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk, which he did on 15 August 1936. Thereby, unaware of what Tizard had in mind for him, Hanbury's career as one of the pioneers of radar began.

He then pursued post-doctoral work in the Laboratory of Genetics at University of Wisconsin-Madison under Dr. Barry Ganetzky. There, he started a lifelong love affair with behavioral neurogenetics studying, in particular, ion channel genes in the fruit fly. In December he accepted an offer of the position of naturalist on board the The Investigator under Matthew Flinders , which was about to depart on its historic voyage to chart the coast of Australia. The Investigator arrived in King George Sound in what is now Western Australia in December . For three and a half years Brown did intensive botanic research in Australia, collecting about 3400 species, of which about 2000 were previously unknown. A large part of this collection was lost, however, when the Porpoise was wrecked en route to England. Brown remained in Australia until May . He then returned to England where he spent the next five years working on the material he had gathered. He published numerous species descriptions; in Western Australia alone he is the author of nearly 1200 species. In

Associated eponyms: Brownian movement Ceaseless, zigzag random movement of microscopic particles when suspended in liquid or gas. Biography: Robert Brown was the son of James Brown, a Scottish Episcopalian clergyman. He was educated at the Marischal College, Aberdeen, and studied medicine at Edinburgh University but did not obtain his degree. In 1795, by the age of twenty-one, he joined the Fifeshire Regiment of Fencibles as Ensign and Surgeon's Mate. While posted in Ireland, he spent much time studying German grammar and botanical documents. At that time he already knew that his true interest lay not in medicine but in botany. On a visit to London in October, 1798, to recruit for the regiment, Brown met the botanist Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), president of the Royal Society. Banks allowed him the free use of his library and collections, and recommended Brown to the Admiralty for the post of naturalist aboard the 334 ton ship the Investigator. The ship was to embark on a surveying voyage along the northern and southern coasts of Australia under the command of Matthew Flinders (1774-1814). Brown ended his army service in 1800, and in July 18, 1801 sailed with the expedition. His salary was £420, at the time a generous sum. On board was also the talented draughtsman Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) after whom the genus Bauera was named. Robert brown was twenty-seven years old when they left England.
