The long-awaited republication of this captivating account of the star's life. Louise Brooks left Wichita, Kansas, for New York City at age fifteen and lived the kind of life of which legends are made. From her beginnings as a dancer to her years in Hollywood, Berlin, and beyond, she was hailed and reviled as a new type of woman: independent, intellectually daring, and sexually free. In this widely acclaimed, first and only comprehensive biography, Barry Paris traces Brooks's trajectory from her childhood through her fall into obscurity and subsequent "resurrection" as a brilliant writer and enduring film icon. "Unquestionably the film biography of the year is Barry Paris's Louise Brooks —great, provocative reading." —Leonard Maltin, Entertainment Tonight " Louise Brooks is not simply a summary of her movie plots and love affairs but a serious work of film and social history." "Star biographies don't get any better than Barry Paris's

Louise Brooks made few films which are seldom seen, and by most accounts was difficult, a snob and a gossip. She exists in our minds as fragments, never whole, for she turned her life into a basis for speculation and conjuring. And yet, despite what little she left for us, her magical and ethereal presence continues to exert a hold on all who have ever glimpsed her on the big screen.
(Mary Louise Brooks) b. Cherryvale, Kansas In her last years, Louise Brooks did all that an often bedridden old woman could manage to secure her enigmatic reputation. She had been a recluse in Rochester, New York, it was said. Her passions were arthritis and emphysema. But she had ended up there largely because of the admiration of James Card , curator of films at Eastman House. And she could still draw men to upstate New York:

Louise Brooks Não existe Garbo.
Não existe Dietrich.
Existe apenas Louise Brooks.

"I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you, it will be with a knife." Louise Brooks W ith her trademark Dutch bob haircut and large expressive eyes, Louise Brooks starred in only a small group of movies, most notably G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl , but today she is revered as one of the great icons of silent cinema. Her story doesn't resemble a typical Hollywood success story. In fact, it's hardly a success story at all. The story of Louise Brooks is the story of a life lived with few compromises, of a life lived with little regard for the powers that held the purse strings in Hollywood, of a life lived for the momentas the quintessential jazz baby that she was. Louise Brooks failed to play by the rules. And she lived with the results of her stubbornness. After Hollywood blacklisted her and the only work she could find was in B movie productions, she finally left Hollywood altogether. Years later, unknown in New York, she virtually barricaded herself in her apartment and found consolation in bottles of gin. But her story didn't end there, and that's the real reason we still remember Louise Brooks today. Louise Brooks turned to writing and once her articles were published in Sight and Sound and Film Culture (and later the articles were collected in her book Lulu in Hollywood ), the world discovered that Louise Brooks possessed astonishing wit and insight. Through her writing, she gave us an insider's view of Hollywood and the vagaries of stardom.

Louise Brooks is an icon of the 20th Century, her face framed by her famous 'black helmet' hairstyle symbolising the 'flappers' of the 1920s. Her look was copied by Cyd Charisse in Singin' in the Rain , Liza Minnelli in Cabaret , Melanie Griffiths in Something Wild , Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction , and Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago , but she is rarely remembered nowadays as the gifted actress she was. Her picture can be found at LBS Portrait Galleries Her Life and Work She was born Mary Louise Brooks on 14 November, 1906, in Cherryvale, Kansas. She grew up in a large, respectable, middle-class family, but from a very early age she was dancing semi-professionally. In 1922, still aged only 15, she left home for New York to join the Denishawn Dance Company , then the leading modern dance company in the USA . In 1924 she became a chorus girl in the ' George White Scandals ', a Broadway show. Later that year she worked as a dancer at the Cafe de Paris in London, and was the first person in the UK to dance the Charleston. In 1925 she returned to New York and Broadway and joined the Ziegfeld Follies, soon becoming one of the two 'Glorified Girls,' the speciality dancers at the centre of many routines.

I'm delighted to introduce a new feature called Bella Donna , where we pay tribute to beauty icons through the ages. A Bella Donna could be an actress, a model, or another prominent historical or modern figure. The only requirement is that she have a distinct and influential look. (Got an idea for a Bella Donna post? Tell me below.) Since bob haircuts are back in full force, I thought we should take a moment to admire Louise Brooks, the silent film actress who put severe short haircuts on the map. Best known for her breakthrough role in 1929's Pandora's Box , Brooks' blunt-cut bangs and high-shine dark hair set off a nationwide trend. Perfectly manicured brows, pale skin, and dark velvety lips finished off her stunning look. In 1938, Brooks retired from Hollywood at a young age, and it's said that she was later discovered working at a sales clerk at Saks To see a gallery of this Bella Donna's influential beauty looks, read more

“Most beautiful but dumb girls think they are smart and get away with it,
because other people, on the whole, aren’t much smarter.” – Louise Brooks
Amazon.com Widgets
There is a mighty culture around the feisty and witty Louise Brooks to this day – fans have seen her in movies, her iconographic face on posters and movie book covers in bookstores around the world, and they worship her. Her famous black bob, the “black helmet” framed a face described by many critics as one “that the camera loved.” People seem to take ownership of her the way they do a cherished or prized possession: it is though they have discovered her themselves and are linked personally to her legend. Take, for instance, this excerpt, written by a devoted fan:
“I discovered Louise Brooks when I was eleven. It happened purely by accident. I was in my local bookstore ... browsing through the film section, as your average film freak does, when I came across a book with the title ‘Lulu in Hollywood’ ... I picked up the book, opened it, and there in front of my eyes was the most mesmerisingly beautiful woman I had ever seen. I was instantly hooked. I couldn’t afford to buy the book, so instead I made regular trips to the bookstore so that I could read it.”
Not unlike Marilyn Monroe, Louise’s persona has taken on a life of its own – it’s hard to imagine her as a real person, and a hard-working one at that. She was born Mary Louise Brooks on November 14, 1906 in Cherryvale, Kansas, USA. During her childhood she was given the Brooksie and Scrubbie, names seemingly at odds with her adult self, a gorgeous woman with smoldering dark eyes and refined elegance. As a child, Louise loved dancing, and while still young she became one of the Denishawn Dancers, which took her from Kansas to New York City.

1920s Fashion Icons
Hollywood and Royal Influences on Fashion and Glamour
Communication both spoken and visual was very good in the 1920s and 1930s and a new set of film stars who also became admired fashion icons emerged. Consequently fashion ideas passed on quickly across the world. Hollywood was producing silent films that entranced cinemagoers and by the time of talking films, even more cinemas sprang up in towns across America and Europe. For a few coins escapism to a world of glamour was possible. Movie stars in addition to royalty became adored fashion icons. Going to the movies was a night not only for the pleasure of seeing a romantic film, but also a journey to glamour and the inevitable role reversal that watching a film engendered. Women wanted to look like their fashion icon screen idols, wear the hairstyles, make up and clothes that their favourite star, who obviously belonged to a very modern advanced world wore. Film goers wanted modern looks like their 1920s icons on screen and the royal idols in the papers.

Louise Brooks : The Canary Murder Case
The Canary Murder Case
The Canary Murder Case
(1929) is the film that destroyed the career of Louise Brooks. Depending on which view you take, it is either a manifestation of a ruthless Hollywood money machine crushing a great talent that it was too ignorant to recognize, or the self-destruction of an actress who was too arrogant to commit herself to the necessity of hard work.
As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between.
The film itself was nothing that anyone could be proud of. It had a bad script, bad direction, an implausible plot, and a cast of second-rank actors. It started life as a silent movie but was recast as a talkie to suit the new post-silents marketplace. It could not have been pleasant for the actors involved who, just when they had thought they had got shut of the wretched thing, were recalled to dub the sound.
Yet some of these actors gritted their teeth and went on to better things. Eugene Palette had a successful career as a character actor where The Canary Murder Case was quickly forgotten. Jean Arthur became a star holding her own with Cary Grant and Ronald Coleman in
