Louise Brooks in 1936 The Martyrdom of Lulu Louise Brooks at 100 “If I ever bore you, it’ll be with a knife.” By Dan Callahan In the long last years of her life, Louise Brooks, isolated in Rochester, New York and utterly tired of living, would end telephone conversations with the order, “Bring a gun.” Her friends were shocked by this macabre request, which must have delighted her. Even as an elderly woman, Brooks toyed with sensuality, boasting to Kenneth Tynan that she could still ejaculate clear across a room, but annihilation was her real passion. She connected sex and death better than any other screen actress. At her centenary this year, her image remains as biting, sensual, and provoking as ever. When she made her films in the roaring twenties, Brooks was at best a second-tier star, at worst a nonentity. Yet she is better known today than Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, and many other silent heavyweights; her failure has lasted much longer than their success. The Brooks cult has spurred many articles, including the famed Kenneth Tynan profile for

Former Wichita Film Star Dances Up Comeback Trail
Louise Brooks Deserts New York Night Clubs for
Chorus Girl Job with Grace Moore Louise Brooks, Wichita girl who danced her way to leading roles in the days of the silent movies and later deserted the screen for the New York night clubs, is now dancing along the comeback trail as a chorus girl in "Interlude," a musical staring Grace Moore. For the past two or three years Miss Brooks has been a favorite entertainer in swanky New York night clubs but deserted the bright lights a few months ago to try for a comeback in Hollywood. Miss Brooks' stage career started when she was in her early teens. From the Horace Mann intermediate school, Miss Brooks went to New York where she studied dancing in the Denishawn school. She later went on a tour as the youngest girl in the Denishawn troupe.

http://www.stanford.edu/~brooksie/Louise/brooksie.html
Icon of an Era
Louise Brooks never made it in Talkies. Not because she wasn't good enough, but simply because she didn't care enough to take her film career seriously. She was the living embodiment of the flapper ideal, but with far more sophistication than any flapper could have hoped for. Movie stardom meant nothing to her, and she paid the price for failing to play the Hollywood game in the late '20s and early '30s. Born and raised in Cherryvale, Kansas, Brooksie began her show business career as a dancer with the well-known Denishawn Dance Company in the same period as Martha Graham. From Denishawn, she went on to Broadway in George White's Scandals and the Ziegfeld Follies. She lived the 1920's Broadway chorus girl high life fast and furious until the movies beckoned. Brooksie's American film career at Paramount was progressing nicely through the late '20s, although she hadn't quite achieved full-fledged "star" status by the time she went to Germany in 1928 to film G.W. Pabst's "Pandora's Box" and "Diary of a Lost Girl". These are the two films on which her modern "cult status" were primarily founded. Personally, I don't particularly like either film very much, but Brooksie's charisma and magnetism are irresistable.
  • My favorite portrait of Brooksie
  • A direct gaze from the siren
  • A very young Louise , probably from her Denishawn Dance Company days.

Every Little Breeze ...seems to whisper Louise...Welcome to Every Little Breeze, a site dedicated to the talent, intelligence and beauty of Louise Brooks. While she was in her time a dancer, actress and writer, she is best remembered for her starring role in the silent German films "Pandora's Box" and "The Diary Of A Lost Girl". While never a major star in her day, her appeal has grown over the years. She has a timeless quality, embodying the Twenties Flapper spirit of glamorous hedonism, while simultaneously appearing quite modern. Golden Silents
Silent Film Clips Message Board Louise Brooks (1906-1985) The enigmatic and striking-looking actress Louise Brooks was born Mary Louise Brooks on November 14th, 1906, in Cherryvale, Kansas. She was primarily a dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies before her film debut in 1925. Her distinctive hairstyle and Garbo-like mystique took the previous flapper model of the silly blonde or brunette jazz era baby onto a higher, more serious and sensual level. Louise's performances in "A Girl In Every Port" and "Beggars of Life" (both 1928) proved that she had real acting talent. However, still feeling restricted in the types of roles she could play in America under the studio system, Louise took off for Germany, and made her two best films under the direction of Georg Wilhelm Pabst: "Pandora's Box" and "Diary Of A Lost Girl" (both 1929). Perhaps Louise Brooks should have stayed in Germany to make films, at least until Hitler came to power in 1933, because when she returned to America her roles in Hollywood films became routine and forgettable. She was given roles in westerns, for which she was unsuitable, and a comedy with W.C. Fields. Fed up, Louise retired from the screen in 1938. She married and divorced twice and had no children. In later years Louise did historical film research, and continued her interests in painting, dancing, and writing, including publishing an autobiography "Lulu In Hollywood" in 1982. Louise Brooks died in Rochester, NY, of a heart attack, on August 8th, 1985.

Little Lulu
Cinequest looks back at Louise Brooks, one of silent cinema's sexiest sirens By Richard von Busack T HE GREATEST STARS could be summed up in a few strokes of ink, as if by calligraphy. In Louise Brooks' case, one sketches the crescents of her gleaming black hair: the locks, like twin scythes, accentuating the points of her bitter half-smirk; a few slashes indicating the bright and heartless eyes, half closed under dark and level brows. Her best-known film, 1929's Pandora's Box (which screens Friday at Cinequest) is a bizarre movie in which its star labors under a stodgy director (G.W. Pabst) and a plot squished together from a pair of plays. What transpires is the adventures of a very bad girl on her way down the drain. In one instance, Lulu is close-dancing with a big-shouldered blonde lesbian; in another, she's dating a noted serial killer. In yet another, she's wrecking the career of a German cabinet minister. At other times, she narrowly avoids being shipped off to a Cairo brothel.

Hollywood Lost: The Power of Louise Brooks
George Eastman House is celebrating the centennial of famed silent-film star Louise Brooks (1906-1985) — the magnetic and mysterious performer who lived out the last act of her life in Rochester. The anniversary is being highlighted with a film series as well as a photography exhibition, Hollywood Lost: The Power of Louise Brooks , on view Nov. 11, 2006 through Feb. 25, 2007. The exhibition of more than 40 vintage images will span Brooks’s childhood to the end of her life, featuring personal portraits, publicity stills, photographs from the star’s private collection, and personal momentos. The exhibition also will feature a media presentation and audio installation featuring Rochester native Donald McNamara's 1979 interview with Brooks. Brooks had a close relationship with George Eastman House, coming to Rochester in the 1950s to be near the museum and its collections, spending her final days as a painter and author. At Eastman House she spent many hours conducting research for her own articles on cinema and her biography. In 1982, she was granted the prestigious George Eastman Award for her work in motion pictures. Brooks, who was born and raised in Kansas, started her career as a dancer with the Denishawn Dance Company in 1922, performed with theZiegfeld Follies on Broadway in 1925 and went on to act in 24 films in Hollywood and Europe. She signed with Paramount Pictures in 1925, appearing at first in bit parts and eventually moving up to supporting roles in box-office hits. Due to her distaste for Hollywood filmmaking, she terminated her contract with Paramount and accepted an offer from legendary German director G. W. Pabst to make films in Germany. There Brooks emerged as a screen icon who outraged censors with her frank behavior.
