"If there's any deity to me, it's language."
Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996) is unquestionably the greatest poet to emerge from postwar Russia and one of the great minds of the last century. In interviews from 1972 to 1995, Joseph Brodsky: Conversations covers the course of his exile. The last interview dates from just ten weeks before his death. In talks, he calibrates the process of his remarkable reinvention from a brilliant, brash, but decidedly provincial Leningrad poet to an international man of letters and an erudite Nobel Prize laureate. Brodsky's poetry earned him a Nobel, and his essays won him awards and international acclaim. This volume shows that there was a third medium, in addition to poetry and essays, in which Brodsky excelledthe interview. Although he said that "in principle prose is simply spilling some beans, which poetry sort of contains in a tight pod," he nevertheless emerges as an extraordinary and inventive conversationalist. This volume includes not only his notable interviews that helped consolidate Brodsky's international reputation but also early and hard-to-find interviews in journals that have since disappeared. Cynthia L. Haven is a literary critic at the

Brodsky, Joseph
Joseph Brodsky was born in 1940, in Leningrad, and began writing poetry when he was eighteen. Anna Akhmatova soon recognized in the young poet the most gifted lyric voice of his generation. From March 1964 until November 1965, Brodsky lived in exile in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia; he had been sentenced to five years in exile at hard labor for "social parasitism," but did not serve out his term.
Four of Brodsky's poems were published in Leningrad anthologies in 1966 and 1967, but most of his work has appeared only in the West. He is a splendid poetic translator and has translated into Russian, among others, the English metaphysical poets, and the Polish emigre poet, Czeslaw Milosz
On June 4, 1972, Joseph Brodsky became an involuntary exile from his native country. After brief stays in Vienna and London, he came to the United States. He has been Poet-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, Queens College, Smith College, Columbia University, and Cambridge University in England. He currently is Five College Professor of Literature at Mount Holyoke College. In 1978, Brodsky was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Yale University, and on May 23, 1979, he was inducted as a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1981, Brodsky was a recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's award for his works of "genius".

A bronze sculpture of the poet by Yuri Firsov , which is one of the finalists in the art-competition for a planned JOSEPH BRODSKY MONUMENT in St. Petersburg, Russia. St. Petersburg/New York (mea) The sculptor Yuri Firsov of Toronto, Canada was selected by the Museum of European Art and the European Art Foundation (EKS) in Berlin as the 'Artist of the Month.' The Russian-born artist has spent several months in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2005 in connection with the art-competition for a monument honoring the poet Joseph Brodsky. The competition was opened two years ago on the occasion of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary in 2003, and Yuri Firsov is among the finalists in the art competition. A small version of the proposed monumental sculpture of the poet Brodsky has been created by Firsov in bronze. The vitality and striking likeness of the poet has been masterfully captured by Firsov. He was born in Russia in 1960, and studied at the Mukhina Arts Academy, and taking part in a number of national and international exhibitions. In 1991 he arrived in Toronto, Canada, where he now has his main studio. Nobel Lecture in Literature 1987
Joseph Brodsky
I F T
his sensation is aggravated not so much by the thought of those who stood here before me as by the memory of those who have been bypassed by this honor, who were not given this chance to address "urbi et orbi," as they say, from this rostrum and whose cumulative silence is sort of searching, to no avail, for release through this speaker. T he only thing that can reconcile one to this sort of situation is the simple realization that — for stylistic reasons, in the first place — one writer cannot speak for another writer, one poet for another poet especially; that had Osip Mandelstam, or Marina Tsvetaeva, or Robert Frost, or Anna Akhmatova, or Wystan Auden stood here, they couldn't have helped but speak precisely for themselves, and that they, too, might have felt somewhat uncomfortable. T hese shades disturb me constantly; they are disturbing me today as well. In any case, they do not spur one to eloquence. In my better moments, I deem myself their sum total, though invariably inferior to any one of them individually. For it is not possible to better them on the page; nor is it possible to better them in actual life. And it is precisely their lives, no matter how tragic or bitter they were, that often move me — more often perhaps than the case should be — to regret the passage of time. If the next life exists — and I can no more deny them the possibility of eternal life than I can forget their existence in this one — if the next world does exist, they will, I hope, forgive me and the quality of what I am about to utter: after all, it is not one's conduct on the podium which dignity in our profession is measured by.

Indeed, he joins the company of other powerful Poet Laureates of America. Joseph Brodsky was born in what was once Leningrad, (now St. Petersburg) Russia. In his early twenties, he roamed the square as a dissenter until he was finally caught and sent away to live in the far north regions of Russia. Russia forced Brodsky into exile in 1972 and initially he sought refuge with W.H. Auden who lived in Vienna. http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/brodsky.htm) Go To Page: 1
