Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson has launched a dual private and public blood bank of umbilical cord blood as a source of stem cells to help treat donors or their families and other people who might need it.
Sir Richard said in a BBC radio interview earlier today that he got the idea for the project a number of years ago when he was visited by a senior director of the National Blood Centre asking for his support in a charitable role because children were dying through lack of umbilical cord blood. Initially Sir Richard offered 3 million pounds to the National Health Service to help them increase their storage capacity for umbilical cord blood, but this was not something the NHS was comfortable with, accepting funds from private sources. So Sir Richard decided to set up a company to do the job.

What Will U.S. Air Travel Look Like in Ten Years? A Freakonomics Quorum
By Stephen J. Dubner airline travel over the past couple of years, covering everything from the future of pilotless airplanes to security snafus to the likelihood of an all-business-class U.S. airline That said, it is an interesting industry, complex and full of change. For providers, costs are high and rising; consumers, however, have gotten accustomed to dirt-cheap fares. For all the security hassles, scheduling woes, and general discontent, the industry is extraordinarily safe and, at the end of the day, a marvel . (FWIW, here is a recent draft paper , by the economists Severin Borenstein and Nancy L. Rose So in the tradition of past Freakonomics Quorums on the music industry street charity , and climate change Clifford Winston Richard Branson Gary Topping Patrick Smith and Josh Marks The U.S. airline market is a mess right now, with unhappiness increasing among customers, employees, and executives. While certain companies have become profitable again, the future looks murky. What will the U.S. airline industry look like in 10 years in terms of prices? Customer service? Safety? Technology? The economics of the business itself?

By Betsy Morris September 22, 2003 It is 7 a.m., and Richard Branson has been hard at work for 2 1/2 hours, though you'd never know it by watching him. Barefoot, clad in a navy bathing suit, he is lying in a hammock strung up in one corner of the great room of his Necker Island home, open to the West Indies trade winds and looking due west out over the turquoise Caribbean. He has a black composition book in his lap and the tip of a plastic ballpoint pen in his mouth. He is writing a letter to the Financial Times . "Hello," he says, looking up. "Can I get you a cup of tea?" Already this morning, from his hanging perch, he has scanned a pile of faxes and had several phone conversations in an attempt to resolve a thorny disagreement with his Australian partner, Patrick Corp., over their airline, Virgin Blue. He has begun to mend fences with T-Mobile, a Virgin partner and supplier. The portable phone in his lap rings, and he takes a message. It is Monica, over at the Fat Virgin's Cafe, wanting to know if anybody on the island can share a supply boat today; she's running out of food. He writes the message on the back of his hand so he won't forget.

Richard Branson - The Rebel Billionaire and the Ultimate Multipreneur
From Scott Allen
Your Guide to Entrepreneurs
FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Whether in business or in thrill-seeking, this billionaire can do it better than anyone else, or at least his track record says so. From building an empire of over 200 companies and 25,000 employees to breaking records in the air or on the water, Richard has done it all. How did he become one of the richest men in the world? The simple answer is he delivered old products and services in new ways while focusing on industries in which the customers were poorly served and serving them better. The Beginning: Born in England in 1950, he was an entrepreneur from the start. With two failed endeavors (growing Christmas trees and raising budgerigars) already under his belt, by the age of 16, this serial entrepreneur had begun his first successful company (a student magazine) and was on his way to extraordinary success. By the age of 20, he had founded a small mail order record retailer called Virgin, and shortly thereafter, he opened a record shop on Oxford Street in London.

Saab UK has released a teaser taste of its interview with Sir Richard Branson on biofuels, his personal actions to reduce his carbon footprint and his latest idea: creating the first carbon-neutral resort in the Caribbean, on his home of Necker Island. The interview will be published in full on Thursday at the Saab Biopower UK website
In the interview, Branson says that, "I believe we need to make a virtue out of investing in clean technology and renewable energy and not be ashamed to want to make profits out of it. For too long, environmentally-friendly technology and issues about the environment have been seen as a corporate social responsibility issue and not an opportunity to create new wealth in the future. Governments alone cannot solve the problems we face unless the capitalist world invests in a sustainable future."
If you can't wait two days to hear what else Mr. Virgin has to say, here's a bunch-a-Branson from the AutoblogGreen archives:

Richard Branson, the best man Larry Page could find
according to Reuters . Really? Richard Branson ? The loudmouth entrepreneur who named his business empire after his sexual status? He and Larry are that tight? Branson over Larry's brother Carl, who is also a successful entrepreneur ? Not Sergey Brin, Larry's cofounder, who reportedly had Larry do the honors at his wedding ? Our cynical opinion: Branson's status in the wedding party was most likely a quid pro quo for hosting their nuptials on his privately owned Necker Island. He blamed, no joke, flight delays. Daily Intel caught up with him and asked about the now-famous incident when he angrily splashed Stephen Colbert with a glass of water during a taping of the Colbert Report . Turns out all is forgiven. He and Virgin America CEO Fred Reid also have plans for hotels in space and fond memories of the time Branson threatened to throw Janet Jackson off a hot-air balloon. It's all after the jump.

Richard Branson Takes 6 Gs Training for His Suborbital Spaceflight- And Loves It
By Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides Categories: Space Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson jumped out of the centrifuge with a huge smile on his face- he had just completed a simulation of all the Gs he would feel during SpaceShipTwo's suborbital launch and re-entry and was ready for the real thing. His reaction was typical of the Virgin Galactic Founder Astronauts who also got a taste of what their spaceflight will feel like by riding in the NASTAR STS-400 centrifuge outside of Philadelphia. Said one, "I loved it, loved it, loved it!" These pioneering people are the first 100 who will fly on Virgin Galactic's suborbital spacecraft, SpaceShipTwo, being built by aerospace marvel Burt Rutan. Branson plans to be on the inaugural flight of the ship with his son Sam, 22, and other special guests. Test flights are expected to begin as early as next year. Branson successfully completed his centrifuge training with Sam and Professor James Lovelock, 88, the scientist who created the concept of Gaia Theory. Branson said:

Training at the NASTAR Center is an integral part of Virgin Galactic's spaceflight program, because during a flight, passengers will experience the same physiological stresses as professional astronauts, including elevated, sustained Gs. by Staff Writers
Southampton PA (SPX) Dec 06, 2007
Environmental Tectonics reports that Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group, has successfully completed a space flight training course at the NASTAR Center, which is the National Aerospace Training and Research Center. He undertook this training in preparation for a flight aboard SpaceShipTwo, the suborbital vehicle his company Virgin Galactic is developing along with Burt Rutan of Scaled Composites. The test flying program for SpaceShipTwo and its launch aircraft WhiteKnightTwo is expected to begin in the summer of 2008, with SpaceShipTwo likely to make its first flight into space in the following year. Commercial operations are expected to begin from Spaceport America, in New Mexico, once all test flying is successfully completed and the FAA has issued a license to fly. Commenting on the NASTAR Center space flight training, Sir Richard said, "It was an amazing experience. Due to the flight simulation combined with the G forces created by the STS-400 centrifuge, I really felt like I was launching into space.
