kicked off service in the United States today. As regular BB readers may recall, they kindly invited us to name one of the planes a while back I flew on a VA inaugural flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco just now ('California Dreaming' flight number VX0846) to check out the new service, and uploaded the iPhone snapshots you see here from the plane. More of them here: Link These planes are wired. There are two 110-volt power outlets for every three seats (1:1 ratio in first class), USB ports, two WiFi access points on board (front and rear, broadcasting SSIDs today, but not delivering connectivity yet pending regulatory approval), ethernet at every seat (which connects you to a planewide network mile high LAN parties, anyone?). EVDO is planned for transmitting data back to the ground (email, txting not active today, should be by early '08). I'm told AirCell will be providing the wireless connectivity My flight buddy today was Artur Bergman from O'Reilly Radar . His account of the inaugural flight is here: Link . He shot the chat UI snapshot here , more great snaps from Artur here: Link So, in three words: Virgin America pwns. Here are ten reasons:

$25 Million Offered In Climate Challenge
Tycoon Hopes to Spur Milestone Research
By Kevin Sullivan Washington Post Foreign Service Saturday, February 10, 2007; Page A13 LONDON, Feb. 9 British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, with former vice president Al Gore at his side, offered a $25 million prize Friday to anyone who can come up with a way to blunt global climate change by removing at least a billion tons of carbon dioxide a year from the Earth's atmosphere. Branson, saying that the "survival of our species" is imperiled by current environmental trends, said the prize was similar to cash inducements that led to some of history's most notable achievements in navigation, exploration and industry. A competition launched in the 17th century, he said, resulted in the creation of a method to accurately estimate longitude. Britain's Richard Branson has enlisted Al Gore as a judge in contest to find a way to take carbon dioxide out of the air.

Sir Richard Branson Claims He and Larry Page are Working Together
Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, who hosted Larry Page's storm-tossed nuptials on his Caribbean island, Necker, last year, says that he and the two Google founders are working on a project together. According to a diary item in a British newspaper, the British tycoon and the two search engine billionaires are working on a secret project together. And they've given it the most awful working name: Virgle. Although it may look like a spelling mistake, Virgle is a scheme with an environmental bent. "It's an exciting project, says the Virgin frontman. "Page also hopes to devote money to renewable energy, and that's an area in which we'll definitely collaborate." Hmm, sounds a bit nebulous to me. Both tycoons are, apparently, kite-surfing buddies. In the same interview, Branson speculated about the death of his friend Steve Fossett, who disappeared while trying to circumnavigate the globe in September last year. "I remain convinced that he had a heart attack. His plane crashed and he smashed into the ground, which is why we haven't been able to retrieve his body. I don't think it was a technical problem, or he would have survived." [

July 27, 2005 The Spaceship Company will be jointly owned by Virgin and Scaled, and will contract Scaled for the research, development, testing and certification of SS2/WK2. Burt Rutan will head up the technical development team. Burt Rutan commented: "I am very excited to have agreed the terms on which we can now move forward to develop the world's-first commercial, passenger-carrying Spaceships. This will truly herald an era of personal spaceflight first described by the visionary science fiction writers of the 1940's and 1950's. Richard and I share a vision that commercially-viable and safe space tourism will provide the foundation for the human colonization of space. I am looking forward, (actually looking way up!) to working together with Richard on this next exciting phase." Sir Richard Branson added: "I couldn't be more delighted to announce the formation of this joint venture at the biggest private aviation event in the world. Like many millions of people growing up in the Sixties who witnessed the wonder of man walking on the moon - I dreamt that one day I too would make that 'one small step...'! Unfortunately though, over the last three decades, many people gave up hope - luckily people like Burt Rutan never did. His vision has allowed people, like me, to dream again. But even I never dreamed as boy, that one day, I would form, with Burt, the company which will build the world's first commercial passenger spacecraft!"
