  • Ray Bradbury is on fire! At 81, the veteran author of sci-fi classics "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Martian Chronicles" is suddenly very hot in Hollywood. By James Hibberd Author Ray Bradbury, now 81 and recovering from a stroke, has recently become the most sought-after writer in Hollywood. Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger") has signed to direct Bradbury's time-travel adventure "A Sound of Thunder." Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile") will direct new productions of "The Martian Chronicles" and "Fahrenheit 451." Bradbury is also adapting his short story collection "The Illustrated Man" for the Sci-Fi Channel and says he's writing a script based on his novella "Frost and Fire" that will be filmed next year. And the literary establishment has also recognized him recently. Last November the National Book Foundation gave its Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to Bradbury.

Introduction (Wait until this page is completely downloaded before clicking.) Clearly Bradbury had a certain vision of the Mars in which these stories are set, a fantasy world based far more on Edgar Rice Burroughs novels ( A Princess of Mars and its many sequels) than on contemporary science. Bradbury returned to this fantasy Mars in other stories not included in this volume ("The Exiles," "The Fire Balloons" and "The Other Foot" in The Illustrated Man, " Night Call, Collect" and "The Lost City of Mars" in I Sing the Body Electric,; and "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed" in A Medicine for Melancholy) . To a certain degree, Bradbury is also writing to counteract the image of a menacing Mars as portrayed first in H. G. Well's War of the Worlds. In this work humans from Earth play the role of "invaders from outer space." The Martian Chronicles is best read as a collection of linked short stories rather than as a novel. Although such collections are unusual in "mainstream" fiction they are common in science fiction. Bradbury has always been more of a short story writer than a novelist, and most of the stories can be read separately from their present context. When that fact is realized, some of the inconsistencies and contradictions in

Profiled by Galen Strickland Raymond Douglas Bradbury ) Born in Waukegan, Illinois, much of his work reflects the sensibilities of a small-town, Midwestern pastoral setting, even though the writer has been a resident of the Los Angeles area since his early teens. Another recurring theme in his work is that of the autumnal season, most especially the traditions surrounding Halloween, so it was almost inevitable that I would think about him at this time of the year. Perhaps best described as a fantasist, although many of his stories are closer to the horror genre than they are to traditional fantasy. Photo by Thomas Victor He still is probably more widely known for the science-fictional The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 , and although I have seen references to him as an anti-technologist, he is still highly regarded by the majority of the SF community. This may have more to do with the lyrical quality of his prose rather than any scientific content - or lack thereof - in his stories. He began writing at an early age and was also an avid reader of the pulps. He and several of his close friends (Henry Kuttner, Ray Harryhausen, Forrest Ackerman) became active in SF fandom. Bradbury himself published his own fanzine - Futuria Fantasia - in which appeared some of his own stories and poems. His first professional sale came in 1941 with "Pendulum," a collaboration with Henry Hasse. The majority of his early stories appeared in

The born story-teller, Ray Bradbury grew up as a science fiction fanatic. He soon found a passion for writing, a daily hobby that he would start age 12 and never stop. By 1992, he had written 28 books, including Fahrenheit 451 The Illustrated Man , and The Martian Chronicles His first book, however, was a collection of short stories called Dark Carnival published in 1949. He was paid a $700 advance, which would cover for his rent for the next two years. Fahrenheit 451 was one of his most famous pieces. Bradbury tells the story in detail his writing process. He paid 10 cents per half hour that he used a UCLA typewriter. All told, he spent $9.80 over the course of eight or nine days to write this book. He explained he was too poor to have an office, and his home office had too many distractions. "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury
451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns.
"Fahrenheit 451" is a multimedia age horror story of genius about firemen who are paid to set books ablaze and is more important than ever in our era of 'political correctness' and shallow consumerism. Got an unpleasant reality? BURN IT! Does that hurt your 'self-esteem' or make you uncomfortable? BURN IT! Below is an addendum where Bradbury scathingly deals with those who have tried to censor his book on censorship (imagine that!).
"There is more than one way to burn a book.
And the world is full of people running about with lit matches."

by Ray Bradbury About two years ago, a letter arrived from a solemn young Vassar lady telling me how much she enjoyed my experiment in space mythology, The Martian Chronicles. But, she added, wouldn't it be a good idea, this late in time, to rewrite the book inserting more women's characters and roles? A few years before that I got a certain amount of mail concerning the same Martian book complaining that the blacks in the book were Uncle Toms and why didn't I "do them over"?

By George Zebrowski Ray Bradbury began publishing in 1941 and is still going strong. He is the recipient of honors and awards too numerous to mention, including the O. Henry Prize and the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Ray Bradbury is a hard man to catch up with, although I have been reading him all my life. In my first few tries at this interview, we had to postpone, because he was unexpectedly on his way somewhere. I caught up with Ray in what now seems a timeless telephonic moment one spring evening at the turn of the century ...

By DAVID SHAFTEL Published: August 22, 2007 LOS ANGELES — Though slowed by age, Ray Bradbury still speaks with exuberance. Hobbled by a stroke in 1999, he now dictates his work over the phone to his daughter in Arizona, who records and transcribes it before faxing edits back. Mr. Bradbury works in an overstuffed leather chair in a den lined by shelves of VHS tapes of classic movies and history texts. The room is crowded with models of dinosaurs, rocket ships and Jules Verne’s Nautilus submarine, his own dusty Emmy, a friend’s tarnished Oscar and a 52-inch flat-screen television not unlike the ones he presaged in “Fahrenheit 451.” Skip to next paragraph
