    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search William Boyd on "Topper" William Boyd June 5 September 12 ) was an American actor. Born William Lawrence Boyd in Cambridge, Ohio , he was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma . He became famous as a Hollywood leading man in silent film romances with a yearly salary of $100,000, but by the end of the 1920s his career had begun to deteriorate, Boyd was without a contract and going broke. Boyd's picture was mistakenly run in a newspaper story about the arrest of another actor with a similar name, William Stage Boyd , on gambling and liquor charges, which further hurt his career. In 1935, he was offered the lead role in the movie Hopalong Cassidy. He changed the original pulp-fiction character, written by Clarence E. Mulford , from a whisky guzzling wrangler to a cowboy hero who didn't smoke, drink, or swear and he always let the bad guy start the fight. Boyd would be indelibly associated with the Hopalong Cassidy character, and he gained lasting fame in the Western film genre because of it. Boyd purchased the rights to the character of Hopalong, as well as the rights to the 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies. In the early 1950s, he released the movies to television, where they became extremely popular. Along with other

Born in Ohio in 1895 and raised in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, William Boyd arrived in Hollywood around 1918. He became a full-fledged leading man during the silent era, and his best work from that period included many films for Cecil B. deMille.
But roles had been tough to find during the early to mid 1930s. Stories and rumors generally mention: that Boyd looked too old due to his prematurely grey hair; and that Boyd was a womanizer and liked parties and alcohol.
Then there was the confusion between this William Boyd, and another Tinseltown performer who had the same name. That 'other' William Boyd had been involved in a scandal in the early 1930s, and our William 'Hoppy' Boyd was incorrectly identified in the press and news as the guilty party. The accusations nearly wrecked our William Boyd's career. (The William Boyd that was the subject of the scandal wound up with the moniker of William 'Stage' Boyd. Remember him - he was the evil 'Zolak' in the awful serial, THE LOST CITY (Krellberg, 1935), which featured Kane Richmond as the hero.)
In the mid 1930s, several forces came together. These were Paramount Pictures, a producer named Harry 'Pop' Sherman and Boyd. 'Pop' Sherman was an independent producer, but by the mid 1930s, the states rights distribution channels for low budget, independently produced sagebrush yarns were disappearing. Sherman got lucky and convinced Paramount to release a series of westerns based on the Hopalong Cassidy novels and short stories authored by Clarence E. Mulford. Hollywood history or myth is that character actor James Gleason was a serious contender for the role of Hopalong Cassidy. But when the dust cleared and filming began, forty year old William Boyd had the job.

  • A Good Man in Africa
"With his first book . . . William Boyd has made a fine and very funny contribution to that now familiar genre of the English comic novel."
  • An Ice-Cream War
". . . less fully realized than its predecessor, but it is a more ambitious novel, and Mr. Boyd's ironic vision of the way individuals are dwarfed by the history through which they live is a large achievement."
  • On the Yankee Station
"Boyd is a skilled narrator with great powers of witty invention. . . . But there's more to Mr. Boyd than knockabout humor."
  • Stars and Bars
"The point about Henderson's liberation from his roots is well taken, and his adventures through the jungle are amusingly narrated, but the 'new clarity' with which he views the world at the end remains, for the reader, a lingering fog."
  • School Ties
"[T]he essay stands on its own as a model of expository prose it is thoughtful, literate and consistently entertaining. . . . Unfortunately, the two screenplays that follow are little but workmanlike attempts to illustrate various points mentioned in this essay . . ."
