A NEW Improved MAP of
HAMPSHIRE

These notes are made from a copy of Thomas Kitchin's map of Hampshire, the 1751 large map. The item studied is in the Map Collection of Hampshire CC Museum Service, item HMCMS:CRH1958.90. This example of the map is sectioned for folding, mounted on ?linen; it has a slip case. The map size is:- wxh, sheet = 70x54cm; wxh, plate = 691x535mm approximately; wxh, map = 681x523mm approximately.
This study concentrates upon what can be seen from the map; studies of the background of county mapping in England, and map makers have been published elsewhere.
Thomas Kitchin was an engraver and publisher at The Star opposite Ely Gate, Holborn, London from 1738 to 1776. He was a prolific producer of maps, plans and charts, and was by appointment Hydrographer to the King - George III. His output included sheet maps, series of maps for the Universal Magazine and the London Magazine, and atlases. He worked with Thomas Jefferys and particularly with Emanuel Bowen.
The 1751 large map by Thomas Kitchin, was one of a series of county maps by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin each doing some counties, published by John Hinton, King's Arms, St Paul's Churchyard, London, from 1749 to 1760. The Hampshire map was published 1751 (there was a small map of the county by Thomas Kitchin the same year). It was published again by John Tinney, Golden Lion, Fleet street, London, from 1753.

John Bowles JOHN BOWLES is one of Australia's most versatile performers - at ease in a major musical, on television or in cabaret. Growing up on Australian television as a member of Young Talent Time, John spent five years travelling the country with the team. During this time he recorded solo and group records, and clocked up an amazing 250 hours of live variety television
He has starred in many pantomimes and TV dramas, and a host of other local programs and telethons around the country.
John has toured the club circuit with his own cabaret, and appeared in the Tribute to Peter Allen, the Premier's Concert, the Mo Awards Presentation, and various voice-overs/jingles and commercials. John received a Mo Award in 1989, for best new talent, for his performance in Let The Good Times Roll at the Burning Log Cabaret Restaurant in Sydney. So successful were the shows that he played six consecutive seasons. He has also received two Green Room Award nominations.
1993 saw John produce his first solo CD album, Hooked On A Feeling. In August 2000, he released his second solo album, Tribute, which includes some of his own songs.

THE JANE AND PAUL BOWLES SOCIETY
The Jane and Paul Bowles Society is an independent author society for both Paul Bowles and Jane Bowles, whose members conduct academic, scholarly research on the Bowleses, and present papers and participate in panels at international and American literary conferences. INFORMATION ON THE SOCIETY History was made at the American Literature Association's annual conference held from May 30 to June 2, 2002, where The Jane and Paul Bowles Society was formed through the tireless efforts of David Racker of Temple University and co-founder Anne Foltz, Editor of the Society's publication Bowles Notes . Racker organized and recruited presenters for a panel on Paul Bowles entitled "Radical Exploration: Modernism, Domination, and Eroticism in the Work of Paul Bowles." John Hawley of Santa Clara University filled in as Panel Chair for Allen Hibbard who was en route to the Middle East. Panel presentations included Anne Foltz's "Subjected to the Arab Gaze: When the Other is US/Us" and David Racker's "The Awareness of Domination in the Work of Paul Bowles." Following a lively question and answer period, Racker and Foltz met with scholars interested in being part of this ground breaking organization. The principle aim of the Society is to celebrate the work of Jane and Paul Bowles in academic venues. The Society attends the Modern Language Association and American Literature Association annual conferences and presents panels geared toward scholarly investigations of works conceived by Jane and/or Paul Bowles. The Society also provides resources to interested instructors and teachers on how to include the Bowleses' works in university or college classroom settings. The Society's members feel Jane and Paul Bowles both made unique and significant contributions to 20th Century arts and letters, and these contributions deserve to be studied and properly acknowledged.

Printed Maps of
New England
to 1780
PART IV: 1700-1780
This of the fourth section of this checklist of printed maps devoted to the New England region from earliest times to 1780. For this period, more so than for the earlier parts, it has become more difficult to decide what constitutes a map of New England. McCorkle, in her recent study New England in Early Printed Maps 1513 to 1800 (reviewed in MapForum 14), threw a wide net. In order to qualify for this a variety of fairly arbitrary criteria have been employed. A map is included if:
  • if the main coverage is the region between New York and the Hudson River and the Maine coast, including both those features if it is principally entitled New England, more or less regardless of its coverage.
Maps of larger parts of the modern United States, maps entitled Canada, and maps entitled Maritime Canada, and maps of the parts of New England have generally been omitted although, it is hoped, they will have their day in other checklists to appear in MapForum. It is also hoped that, at a later date, this checklist will be continued to 1800, but the author originally decided on a 1780 cut-off point (effectively the end of the Revolutionary War) and has not had the opportunity to extend the research.
