Bow was born in a tenement in Brooklyn, New York , the only surviving child of a dysfunctional family afflicted with mental illness , poverty, and physical and emotional abuse . She was the third child born to her parents; the first two children, also daughters, were stillborn. Bow's mother, hoping that her third child would also die at birth, didn't bother with a birth certificate As a child, she was a tomboy and played games in the streets with the boys. Her clothes were ragged and dirty; other girls wouldn't play with her. Clara's friend Johnny was severely burned and died in her arms when she was ten years old. Years later, she could make herself cry at will on a movie set by singing the lullaby " Rock-a-bye Baby ". She said it reminded her of Johnny.

CLARA BOW
By Steve Starr Clara Bow was born July 29, 1905, in Brooklyn, New York during one of the worst heat waves ever experienced there. During birth, her mother Sarah prayed they would both die. Growing up in dire poverty, the pretty, red-haired, vivacious girl wanted to be a movie star more than anything else in the world. Motion Picture, Motion Picture Classic , and Shadowland magazines. Mr. Bow relented and took her to a cheap photo studio, and Clara won a role in the movie Beyond The Rainbow Bow earned a few minor parts in East Coast films, including the role of a tomboy in Down To The Sea In Ships When Schulberg moved to the classy Paramount Studios in 1925, he took Bow along, and there she began to win fame playing modern flappers in hits like The Plastic Age Dancing Mothers and Mantrap Her most famous film It Wings (1927), starring Buddy Rogers, Richard Arlen, and, in a small part, her lover Gary Cooper, won the first Academy Award for Best Picture. The silent film was re-released in 1929 with elaborate sound effects and music. In 1926, Bow bought her first home at 512 North Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills and decorated it herself, indulging her every whim and creating a grand, gaudy, bizarre showplace. Bow became the wildest woman Hollywood had ever encountered. Though the people who inhabited the film colony committed their own sins, they made an effort to keep theirs private. Bow never cared to do so.

T he "jazz baby" personified, Clara Bow (1906-1965) became one of Hollywood's brightest lights of the '20s. Saucy and pert, Clara was dubbed 'The "It" Girl' by Elinor Glyn and chosen to star in the film version of Ms. Glyn's famous novel. While nothing more than good old sex appeal, "It" symbolized the tremendous progress women were making in society, and leading the way was Clara Bow, the girl of the year, who had "It" in abundance. The daughter of a schizophrenic mother and a sexually abusive father, Clara broke away by winning the 1921 Fame and Fortune Contest, sponsored by Brewster Publications, publishers of Clara's favorite magazine, Motion Picture. Winning led to a small part in Beyond the Rainbow , where Clara's part was cut, and then to Down to the Sea in Ships. While critically panned, Clara's performance was praised and made clear Clara's ability to make the screen come alive with her presence. Still one step away from stardom, Clara was signed to B.P. Schulberg's

    The "It" Girl
Between 1922 and 1929, Clara Bow's vitality and sexiness defined the liberated woman of the 1920s. Clara Bow became one of Hollywood's brightest lights during this time. Clara was known as 'The "It" Girl'. "It" symbolized the tremendous progress women were making in society, and leading the way was Clara Bow, the girl of the year, who had "It" in abundance. On the set she was full of charm and wit. She was also a thorough professional, and this was asserted by people who knew and worked with her, such as Colleen Moore, Diana Serra Cary ("Baby Peggy") and Louise Brooks. Clara Bow was an actress of range and depth. Clara played a variety of roles including manicurists, waitresses and department store clerks. In The Plastic Age (Preferred Pictures, 1925), the audience was just warming up to her delicious revelry. It was in her first, bona fide mega-hit Mantrap (Paramount, 1926) that she absolutely enthralled the audience. They and the usually jaded critics behaved as if she had just arrived in a glorious burst of fireworks, even though she had paid her dues in quite a few earlier pictures. Variety, on July 14, 1926, exclaimed, "Clara Bow! And how! What a 'Mantrap' she is! And how this picture is going to make her! Miss Bow just walks away with the picture from the moment she steps into camera range." It (Paramount, 1927) was the pinnacle of her youthful career and forever made her a household Hollywood goddess.
The "It" Girl was so hot and bright. It was inevitable that she would burn out personally and professionally. It's shocking to think that her career was over in 1933 when she was all of 26 years old. This was after she had made millions for her studio, Paramount, and had risen to the stature of one of the most well-known stars in the world. We wonder how it happened and why.
