Allied Family Topic BK  BK  Capt. Richard Booker I Although I am not a descendant of Capt. Richard Booker I, some of his descendants married into my family. Consequently, I have devoted Allied Family Topic BK to his family. Capt. Richard Booker I, in his own words If he could speak to us today, Capt. Richard Booker I might describe his life as follows. In February 1686/7 as Capt . Richard Booker, I secured a patent for 740 acres in Gloucester County.  On 20 April 1694 I got an additional 180 acres there and, on 20 October 1704, was granted 613 acres in Essex County.  I was a militia captain of Gloucester County and a justice of the court in 1698-1702.  I married first Rebecca Leake, the daughter of John Leake of York County, and we were the parents of Edmund, Judith, twins Edward and Richard, Ann, Richard, and John. I married second Hannah Hand, the daughter of Richard Hand (c.1689) and Frances Purefoy. Hannah was then the widow of Capt. William Marshall who was killed in 1692. We had two children, Frances Booker and George Booker. Hannah was the mother also of William Marshall remembered in the 1751 will of her daughter Frances (Booker) Stokes. Descendants of Capt. skip to main skip to sidebar unconquerable gladness unconquerable grease Wednesday, December 20, 2006 cory booker in the midst of all of this obama hoopla , i finally got around to watching street fight , the documentary about the 2002 newark mayoral race that pitted sharpe james versus cory booker, entrenched incumbent v upstart newcomer. whats the obama connection? like obama, booker is a young black centrist democrat running on opportunity and hope. and, cynically, like obama, booker is light-skinned enough perhaps to be palatable to the white voter. is it fair to lump obama and booker together by race? no. but is it exciting to think of the possibility of a new type of face representing the country? of course. i heard about street fight when i heard booker on the radio a year or two ago discussing his candidacy. i remember being excited by him at the time. i was excited to see the movie (even though i knew booker lost). i was disappointed. the movie didnt excite me in the way i hoped. and worse, booker didnt move me in the way i hoped. he seemed flat, an average speaker and only persuasive when angry. and the criticism (carpetbagger, etc) lobbed at booker in the movie did not seem implausible (the criticism hasnt abated now that hes mayor booker won in a landslide earlier this year after james dropped out). i did sense decency, but like his critics, i couldnt shake the feeling that he wasnt altogether genuine.

For example, the vast majority of Americans must own a car because of the combined effects of market and public decisions. Check out the two current leads in Slate for a humourous look at attempting to use a bicycle as a substitute. The point is simple: many "private" goods (e.g. a car purchase, and the gas and insurance purchases which go with it) involve much less choice than it seems at first glance. And the corollary also holds: public decisions often mean that I have no reasonable private choices available. For example, I can't walk 200 yards to the corner store if there are no sidewalks or crosswalks (because we decided not to use public funds to build these), and the store lies across 6 lanes of traffic.
