James Carroll Booker III was born in New Orleans Louisiana on December 17, 1939, son and grandson of Baptist ministers, both of whom played the piano. He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi Gulf Coast , where his father pastored a church. Booker received a saxophone as a gift from his mother, but he demonstrated a stronger interest in the keyboard. It was his sister’s music teacher who taught him piano scales and how to read music. He first played organ in his father's churches. Booker also recalled being hit by an ambulance at age nine, and being treated for multiple broken bones; the pianist speculated that the nearly fatal experience and treatment was linked to his later drug use. He was known for his musical gifts at an early age, and was considered a piano prodigy, giving classical recitals at age six, and continued classical training until twelve. He was acknowledged to have perfect pitch , instant musical recall, and a photographic memory in sight reading . After returning to New Orleans in his early adolescence he attended the prestigious Xavier Academy Preparatory School . He was playing Fr©d©ric Chopin Erroll Garner , and Liberace , and could play their solos from memory. He would sneak out and play

[Historical Note: When the Chickasaws sold their land in Mississippi as part of their removal to Indian Territory, many Chickasaw, usually full-bloods, were deemed to have insufficient education to handle their proceeds from the sales. Their proceeds were therefore placed in trust funds to be paid out over a period of time in small increments. By 1889 there were still sums remaining in these trust accounts and in pending dissolution of the tribe efforts were made to locate any heirs of these "incompetents' so that the trust funds could be closed out.] Stonewall, June Term Commissioners Court 1889 Evidence in Case of Ibah-fon-quah-tubby No. 34: King Blue

Page 403 "We now turn our eyes westward and notwithstanding we have gazed upon, such sights for seventeen long years, we this morning stand awe stricken, amazed, and heartless to think we have so long gazed upon these sights and have never been so deeply impressed with nature's works before, with mountain peaks towering heavenward, like index fingers pointing upward to nature's God, while sighing breezes are gathering from every bough thanks that are being wafted beyond the mountain's peak, caught into aerial heights and wafted heavenward; that again nature's God has painted the woodland green, and surrounding prairies are smiling in their newly woven 'frocks.' The aspect Page 404 is sublime. Chasms which seemingly are dark, when explored are fragrant with spring's perfection. Down, down the deep, deep abyss come the waters of the Delaware rushing by, murmuring songs of praise to the Great Eternal, while the weeping willow seems to raise its grief-stricken head, and for the time, at least, enjoys its woe-begone fate. When once we have ascended the mountain heights, planted our feet upon a piece of masonry designed by nature's God, and gaze upon the grand structure for but one moment, we are forced to exclaim, how powerful is Omnipotence.

sporting house players, Tony Jackson and Jelly Roll Morton Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Huey Smith , bluesier artists Champion Jack Dupree and Professor Longhair , to modern masters such as Harry Connick Jr . and Dr John , they have always held the center of attention. But, of them all, perhaps no one individual led a more eccentric or erratic life than James Booker . Haunted by mental health disorders and heavy drug addiction, the promising career of perhaps the Crescent City's most talented pianist came to an all too sad and early end. James Carroll Booker III was born in New Orleans on December 17, 1939 . His father was a one-time dancer from Bryan, Texas, who decided to change his life's work by becoming a Baptist minister and relocating to New Orleans. His mother had been raised in Mississippi and she was a member of the Baptist church Gospel choir. With such a strong religious influence, it is not surprising that as a child, James ' desire was to become a priest when he grew older.

About The Booker Civil War Letters

This collection includes 22 letters (July 1861 - April 1864) from twin brothers John Booker (1840-1864) and James Booker (1840-1923) of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to their cousin Chloe Unity Blair John and James were born to John Booker (1797-1859) and Nancy Blair Reynolds Booker (1796-1859) on October 10, 1840, and both enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 24, 1861, at Whitmell, Virginia, in Company D 38 th Virginia Regiment, Infantry (also known as "the Whitmell Guards"). They began writing letters to their cousin soon after enlisting, and they continued until they were both severely wounded in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff near Petersburg, Virginia, on May 16, 1864. John died of his wounds in August 1864, but James recovered, married Martha Ann Fulton ["Pat"] (?-1923) of Pittsylvania County, on October 31, 1867, and lived until 1923. These remarkable letters give a sense of what life was like for an ordinary soldier serving in the Confederate army, depicting the drama of battle but also the rhythms of everyday life at camp. The Bookers worry over their health and that of their comrades; they enjoy the plenty and lament the lack of food and supplies; report on the interactions between civilians and soldiers; and describe religious revivals held at the camp. As the war goes on, John fumes against officers, politicians, and the wealthy for evading their responsibilities and mistreating the common soldier, while James grows more fatalistic and religious, trusting that his suffering is God's will.
