Humphrey Bogart
Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born on 25 December 1899 in New York and died on 14 January 1957. Humphrey Bogart's mother was a portrait painter and his father, Dr Belmont DeForest Bogart had inherited money. As well as their house on upper Riverside Drive, New York, the family had a home in the Finger Lakes. After going to an Episcopal school, Humphrey Bogart was sent to Andover where he was thrown out for "irreverence" and "uncontrollable high spirits". Bogart described himself as: "Democrat in politics, Episcopalian by upbringing. dissenter by disposition." He had an admiration of Roosevelt and a contempt for Senator Joseph McCarthy. One of Humphrey Bogart's greatest performances was as Rick in the classic film, Casablanca. Alistair Cooke in "Six Men" claims that in the role: "the audience saw once for all Bogart behaving as a decent approximation to the melancholy man whose wryness was the mask of the incorruptibility he mocked. And it brings us back to Humphrey Bogart, the son of Dr Bogart, who was thrown out of school, did a stint in the Navy, fumbled around the theatre and eventually became the big Hollywood star." Bogart said: "Acting is a job like any other. It takes practice to be good at it. After that you learn your lines, concentrate on nothing else, get dressed and go home."

Contrary to the famous characters he portrayed, Bogart came from an upper middle class background. He was born on December 25, 1899 in New York City. His father, Humphrey DeForest Bogart, was a well-known surgeon and his mother, Maud Humphrey, was a reputable artist and illustrator. Having ample financial means, the Bogarts wanted only the best for young Humphrey. His education was in the finest east coast institutions such as Trinity School and the Phillip's Academy in Andover, Maryland. In school he prepared to study medicine, but Humphrey's grades were not spectacular. An incident with a faculty member at Phillips, and his bad grades, got Bogart kicked out of school and enrolled in the Navy. Bogart's enlistment in the U.S. Navy led to the trademark scar that he flashes in his movies. Just how he obtained the scar is not certain, but there are two probable stories. One story claims that a piece of shrapnel struck him while he was serving on the USS Leviathan. The other story claims that he received the scar from a fight with a prisoner he was escorting. According to the story, the prisoner asked for a light for his cigarette, and while Bogart was getting out his lighter, the prisoner struck him in the face with his handcuffs and tried to run. Bogart then got up and shot the prisoner as he tried to flee. Either way, the Navy gave Bogart a trademark that became part of every tough guy he portrayed.

Tough-guy Humphrey Bogart knew that sometimes winning wasn't everything By Richard von Busack
T HE MOST COMMON way for a producer to turn down a project is to say, "The movies are supposed to be about winners, and your lead character looks like a loser." So where does one especially beloved movie star fit into this picture? He was dog-faced, balding, often unshaven. His typical costume was a wrinkled trench coat, rarely belted, always tied, making it look all the more like a bathrobe. His face reflected the knowledge, as studio mogul Louis B. Mayer once put it, that in this world you had to take the bitter with the sour. In 1993, Entertainment Weekly selected this "loser" as "the greatest movie legend of all time." Humphrey Bogart survives as a star because he uniquely encompasses that opposition between winner and loser in a way that movie producers can't comprehend but that audiences know in their gut. Humphrey Bogart's most famous film, Casablanca , is loved precisely because his character, Rick Blaine, doesn't take allin fact, all he has at the end is his honor. Most of Bogart's films aren't triumphs of the American hero over daunting odds; sometimes, they're tie scores and even defeats.

And most of you have done so for one reason: Admiration of the all-time greatest actor, Humphrey Bogart. Bogie has been my favorite actor since I-don't-know-when (and Casablanca has always been my favorite movie), and when I first started learning how to design web sites in September, 1995, I was shocked, shocked when numerous search engines failed to turn up a single page devoted to him. Therefore, I decided to rectify that oversight myself. You'll notice, if you haven't already, that I've kept this site almost entirely black and white (except in those cases where color is not only appropriate but necessary), which I hope you'll agree helps set the proper film noir tone. In this spirit, I've made my links appear in black text, changing to grey after they're followed. It makes them a bit difficult to see, but I think you'll agree it's the right way to go.

20. Mystique: Humphrey Bogart The Peak Years
The peak years of his film career are covered in depth, circa 1940 through 1954.
http://moderntimes.com/mystique/
From hard boiled Sam Spade to cynical Rick Blaine, from wisecracking shamus Philip Marlowe to down-on-his-luck Fred C. Dobbs, Humphrey Bogart created a gallery of unforgettable characters. Appearing in over 75 films, spanning 26 years, Bogart left an indelible mark on American cinema. The Petrified Forest (1936), Bogart, on the insistence of his Broadway co-star Leslie Howard, re-created his role of the cold blooded killer Duke Mantee. The film was a huge success and gave a tremendous boost to his career. Although his immediate roles remained constrained to the hoodlums, and malcontents he had portrayed prior to The Petrified Forest , he remained steadfast in his pursuit of excellence. The Maltese Falcon , was one of them.
The Maltese Falcon
This is the film role that molded the image we remember of Bogart through the early years of the forties an image elaborated upon and reinforced in Casablanca , and one that all Bogart fans remember with great affection and admiration.
Casablanca
Casablanca (1943), a screen classic, has become the Bogart plays the cafe owner Rick Blaine, a former soldier of fortune who has grown weary of the gun running and fighting, and who is now content to sit out the remainder of the war in neutral Casablanca. The facade of his cynicism begins to weaken as he is haunted by visions of his Paris past, and the beautiful woman (Ingrid Bergman), he still loves and rancorously remembers. He is tormented by the bittersweet memories of his past love affair, memories triggered repeatedly as the strains of
