Help Search Bogarde, Dirk (1921-1999) Actor, Writer Son of the Dutch-born art editor for the London Times and a frustrated-actress mother, Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde studied as a scenic designer and worked as a commercial artist, as well as being an unpromising drama student before the war. He first appeared on the stage in 1939 and as a film extra in Come on George! (d. Anthony Kimmins) in the same year. During World War II, he served with the Air Photographic Intelligence Unit, had a brief stint as a totally unqualified schoolmaster, was a stage success in The Power Without Glory (1947), then went on to become perhaps the most popular and interesting actor in the history of British films. Bogarde 's career of nearly seventy films can be mapped through several key titles. After several films for Gainsborough , none of them making much impact, he played the charismatic young thug in Ealing 's The Blue Lamp (d. Basil Dearden, 1949), bringing a violent sexuality to the role that came near to unbalancing the film's sober intentions. He would often, in fact, suggest unsettling currents at work in otherwise modest and/or hundrum films such as Boys in Brown (d. Montgomery Tully, 1949)

Actor Dirk Bogarde dead at 78
By David Walsh 13 May 1999 British film actor Dirk Bogarde died of a heart attack in London Saturday at the age of 78. He had suffered a serious stroke, which disabled him, a year before. Anyone concerned with art in film will mourn his passing. The future actor was born Derek Niven van den Bogaerde. His father, of Belgian origin, was art editor of the Times of London; his mother had been an actress. Bogarde grew up in a milieu of artists, journalists and actors. For a brief time Bogarde attended art school, where he was taught by Henry Moore, among others. He first found work in the theater in 1939, but was called up by the army the same year. The world war had a significant impact on him. He was involved in the Normandy invasion and visited the Belsen concentration camp shortly after its liberation. "At twenty-four, the age I was then," he wrote in one of the volumes of his autobiography, "deep shock stays registered forever. An internal tattooing which is removable only by surgery, it cannot be conveniently sponged away by time." Bogarde's first leading role in a film came in 1948. With the help of his talent and good looks, the actor became something of a matinee idol. In the mid-1950s he was Britain's number one box office draw, starring in the comic "Doctor in the House" series. Bogarde also spent an unhappy period in Hollywood, where he starred as Franz Liszt in

He started off as the Leonardo DiCaprio of his day and became art film's leading Gentleman Pervert. By Cintra Wilson Pages 1 It's a damning lesson in the difference between good acting and bad acting; a good actor makes the entire audience psychic; the glimpse of a naked emotion can be hair-raising. Bad actors make you aware of their laborious acting process: They yank you from the moment and drag you into a slide show of their personal inhibitions. "Come on, Ryan, a-a-a-act," one is compelled to yell at the screen in a tortured thespian voice. (Not that O'Neal, the Matt Damon of the '70s, is my personal whipping-celebrity. He is, however, like many other leading pretty boys, exemplary of Hollywood's failure to fully grasp the idea that real acting requires subtle emotional gifts.) After a stint as an officer in the British army's Air Photographic Intelligence during World War II, Bogarde, who was born Derek Van den Bogaerde in London in 1921 (his father, an editor at the Times of London, was Flemish), joined a theater group. He was noticed quickly and given small parts in several mystery films, then broke through as a celebrity in the worthless medical comedy "A Doctor in the House," wherein he played a nervous medical student. While comedy isn't Bogarde's strong suit he has no ironic distance from his work and is hence incapable of buffoonery the "Doctor" films, of which he did three, were nonetheless a demonstration of the way he could single-handedly dignify a film by bringing his own unflappable truth to it. By the 1950s, Bogarde had been singled out by British cinema bosses as a star. He became a matinee heartthrob; one critic has aptly described him as the "Leonardo DiCaprio of his day."

Dirk Bogarde Welcome to the Dirk Bogarde UK Site! 01/10/04 Today has been one of the most exciting days of my life! I went along to the National Theatre to hear John Coldstream talk about his latest autobiog on Dirk and trotted along afterrwards to get him to sign my book. He is a true gent and even signed it 'webmistress' for me. I also got to shake hands with Dirk's brother Gareth, which was a true honour and he seemed very interested in my site so maybe we'll get him popping in and taking a look himself! This page is dedicated to Dirk Bogarde and his varied career. This is one of the only UK sites to be dedicated to Dirk's life work and as he was English, it seems a great pity to forget him. This site gives you a comprehensive list of all his films including photos and the script of my favourite scene in each film that I've watched. Hello, Everyone,
moment of reflection on the body of work he has left behind. He died peacefully
on 8 May 1999, around noon, sitting in his chair facing the light he loved so much
streaming in from the windows of his top flat. I like to think that light reminded
him of his beloved home in southern France.
Sir Dirk had just turned 78. From reports, he was of good cheer having had a
lively, cordial visit from Lauren Bacall that morning. He was looking forward to the coming year and perhaps even dictating more writing. On a personal level, I would have cherished reading one last essay from him at that point in his life which reflected back on his films, his friends, and life in general. From what

He was born in England in 1921, and moved to France in 1968 where he lived for 20 years. Bogarde, with his life partner Anthony Forwood, bought a 15th-century farmhouse, "Le Pigeonnier" in the early 1970s. Located a few km east of Grasse , near the communes of Chateauneuf-de-Grasse and Opio, the two friends lived in the house until 1983, returning to England when Forwood's became seriously ill. The "Villa "Lou Miradou" in Chateauneuf-de-Grasse overlooks Bogard's old olive orchards, that had 400 trees when he moved there. He lived in Saint Tropez at some time. Some of Dirk Bogarde's French Connections include being made a Chevalier de l'Ordre de Lettres (1982), the first Briton to be named President of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival (1984) and a member of the jury at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. Dirk Bogarde...a fine actor but an essentially private man
Sir Dirk Bogarde, one of the biggest stars of 20th century British cinema, has died aged 78. The BBC's media correspondent Nick Higham looks back at the life of Sir Dirk Bogarde His nephew, Brock Van der Bogaerde, said the former 1950s matinée idol suffered a heart attack at his London home. He said: "He was extremely happy and looking forward to events like his 80th birthday and many plans for the future. "I m sure there is not a better way to go." Bogarde made his acting debut in 1949 and carved out a niche in the 1950s with a succession of romantic leads in dramas and light comedies, among them Doctor at Sea, with a young Brigitte Bardot. Like Hollywood star Rock Hudson, his sexuality was at odds with his screen persona. More serious parts In 1960 the director Joseph Losey gave him a chance to play more serious parts - like The Servant, opposite James Fox. In Victim, another Losey film, he openly played a homosexual: it was a breakthrough.

On top of more than 60 films and 14 books, including several best-selling volumes of autobiography, there were cupboards packed with letters, photographs and film scripts left at the flat in Chelsea, west London, where Bogarde spent his final years. It was left to his nephew, Brock Van den Bogaerde, to deal with them. He decided that before despatching any material of note to institutions for study by future generations, he should put together a website that would serve researchers and fans alike. The plan was to include everything "from magazine covers to his views on acting, his role in British cinema, in European cinema, in theatre and every book he ever wrote. It was such an enormous life, it really needed a website to put it all in perspective," he says. The resulting site, www.dirkbogarde.co.uk, was launched in late March on what would have been Bogarde's 86th birthday. The 600-page site offers a reminder of the literary as well as the acting output of the star of films such as The Blue Lamp, Darling and Death in Venice, but also a glimpse into the private world of one of the 20th century's more complex leading men.

Bogarde, Sir Dirk (1921-1999) In her eulogy for Sir Dirk Bogarde, Glenda Jackson called him Britain's "first home-grown film star." Often dubbed "the British Rock Hudson"both for his matinee-idol good looks during the 1950s and his discreet homosexualityhis film career spanned five decades and seventy films. He was born Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde to a Dutch-born father (a London Times arts editor) and an English mother (a former actress) in Hampstead, London, on March 28, 1921. After an inauspicious film debut as an extra in the comedy Come On George (1939), his career was interrupted by military service in World War II, during which he was decorated for valor as a major in the Queen's Royal Regiment. Esther Waters , Bogarde assumed the role. As a result, he earned a long-term film contract with the Rank studios and subsequently ceased theatrical work. During the 1950s, Bogarde starred in romantic comedies, war films, and crime thrillers. As he entered his forties, however, he assumed more serious dramatic roles, some of which touched upon homosexual themes, a particularly risky venture in the years before the decriminalization of male homosexuality with the 1967 Sexual Offences Act.
