R.D. Blackmore (1825–1900), English novelist and fruit grower wrote Lorna Doone With his elder brother Henry (1824–1875), Blackmore spent much of his childhood in the lush and pastoral "Doone Country" of Exmoor, Devon, and along the Badgworthy Water (where there is now a memorial stone in Blackmore's honour) and among the future fictional Doone Valley's towering hills. The severe and remote rocky areas of Devon provided protection for many fugitives at the time where justice was swift and penalties harsh. Blackmore would hear of many tales of highway robbery and murder among illiterate half-wild men living on the edge of survival. Richard Doddridge Blackmore was born 7 June 1825 at the vicarage in Longworth, Berkshire County, son of the Reverend John Blackmore (1794–1858). His mother, Anne Basset Knight (1794–1825) died of typhus when Richard was a mere three months old and so he was raised by his aunt Mary Francis Knight. They lived on the rugged and remote North Shore of the Bristol Channel near Glamorgan though young Richard travelled south often to visit his father and paternal grandfather in Devon. By 1832 he was living with his father again after he had married his second wife, Charlotte Ann Platt in 1831. He started his education at Squire’s Grammar School in South Molton, Devon, then went on to the same school his father had attended, Blundell's School, during which he lived in the village for the week and would go home on Sundays. One of the boys he lodged with would later become archbishop of Canterbury. In the harsh and narrow circumstances he experienced the severe discipline and corporal punishment that some say later led to his epilepsy, though Blackmore does not make Blundell's out to be so monstrous in

R.D. Blackmore Lorna Doone Introduction
Novelist and poet, born at Longworth, Berks, educated at Tiverton School and Oxford, practised for a short time as a lawyer but, owing to his health, gave this up, and took to market-gardening and literature at Teddington. His first published was Poems by Melanter (1853), followed by Epullia The Bugle of the Black Sea (1855), etc.; but he soon found that fiction, not poetry, was his true vocation. Beginning with Clara Vaughan in 1864, he produced fifteen novels, all of more than average, and two or three of outstanding merit. Of these much the best in the opinion of the public, though not of the author, is Lorna Doone (1869), the two which rank next to it being The Maid of Sker Springhaven (1887). Others are Cradock Nowell Alice Lorraine Cripps the Carrier Mary Anerley (1880), and Christowell Links Richmond.gov.uk Information on R.D. Blackmore wrote 14 historical and adventure novels, including Cradock Nowell (1866), The Maid of Sker (1872), Mary Anerley (1880), Springhaven (1887), and Perleycross (1894). Perlycros RD Blackmore loved to stay at his uncle's and grandfather's at Charles during his school holidays.  According to a local gazetteer, his uncle had "a large and commodious Rectory House, recently rebuilt, and commanding extensive views."  At the east end of Charles church is a memorial window erected in 1925 to celebrate the centenary of RD Blackmore's birth.  At Charles Bottom, by the bridge, there is a large fallen menhir stone, thought to date from the Bronze Age.  On it R.D. Blackmore often sat and there composed some of his early poetry and prose.  When he was seventy years old, he wrote the following lines: "Sometimes of a night, when the spirit of a dream slips away for a waltz with the shadow of a pen over dreary moors and dark waters, I behold an old man with a keen profile under a parson's shovel hat, riding a chestnut horse up the slopes of Exmoor, followed by his little grandson upon a shaggy and stoggy pony. In the hazy fields of lower hills some four or five miles behind them may be seen the ancient Parsonage, where the lawn is a russet sponge of moss and a stream trickles under the dining-room floor, and the pious rook, poised on the pulpit of his nest, reads a hoarse sermon to the chimney pots below'. He was the third son of the Reverend John Blackmore and Anne Basset Knight Blackmore, the daughter of a distinguished vicar. His mother died of typhus a few months after Blackmore's birth, and he and his older brother, Henry, lived with relatives during much of their childhood. The Blackmore family had originated in western Devonshire, and the author spent many of his formative years in the west country, the setting of Lorna Doone. Like his hero, John Ridd, Blackmore attended Blundell's School, Tiverton. He entered Exeter College, Oxford, in 1843 and received his degree four years later.
