Already his next movie “Subway” with Isabelle Adjani and Christopher Lambert received 13 nominations for the most important French movie award. The deep sea drama “The Big Blue” and the action thriller “Nikita” followed and earned him great recognition beyond Europe. With The Professional as an audition tape, Besson was able to raise $90 million for The Fifth Element, an idea he has lived with since he was a teen. The film opens Friday. "I'd seen movies like Star Wars and they had an incredible effect on me. The Fifth Element is my view of those worlds." Set in the 23rd century, The Fifth Element is the story of an evil galactic force headed for Earth. Mankind's only hope is a stronger force of good. It's up to New York cabby Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), a monk named Cornelius (Ian Holm) and the sensuous extraterrestrial Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to thwart megalomaniac Zorg (Gary Oldman) who is helping the alien force in its mission to destroy Earth. "From the moment I saw Bruce Willis in Die Hard, I wanted him to play Korben," Besson says. "Bruce and I talked a few years ago and he was really enthusiastic. When it came time to actually make the movie, we decided not to go for a big star. We wanted to put the star salary into the special effects.
