GM Hopkins:His influence on John Berryman Gerry Murray, poet - critic, Chicago,USA
Introduction Countervailing views of the most apt positioning of Gerard Manley Hopkins in the English-American poetic tradition often serve as fodder for both academic and amateur debate. There is, of course, the prevailing double-edged question: Should Hopkins be considered a major minor poet?... or a minor major poet? One supposes this is more than literary hair-splitting. And certainly Hopkins' admirers should quickly assume the high ground that sees this nineteenth-century Jesuit as a major talent with a minor but enduring and ever challenging output. Positioning Hopkins in the Western Canon
Yet properly locating and then assessing Hopkins apparently remains a tenuous exercise at best. In the predominant American critic Harold Bloom's The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages, for instance - a controversial but compelling opus designed to delineate the `Western Literary Tradition' - Hopkins is mentioned in the text but once, and then only in an obtuse reference to Walt Whitman's influence on him .
Moreover, in an attempt to recommend readings from and for the so-called `ages', Bloom lumps Hopkins in with such late nineteenth century figures as Arthur Hugh Clough, George Meredith, Francis Thompson, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Lionel Johnson, Robert Bridges, G.K. Chesterton, Coventry Patmore, John Davidson, Ernest Dowson and William Morris - notables all, but hardly sensational and immortal company.

Buy the CD online at or at Tower Records Home Reviews From "Splendid-New Music Daily" , www.splendidezine.com - by writer Brett McCallon If Barry Goldberg sounds like a throwback to the protest music of another era, he shouldn't have to apologize for it. He has, after all, been pursuing a musical career (largely in obscurity) for over three decades; any hints of Classic Rock that haunt Empire Moon have been come by honestly.
And hints there are: you're not going to hear much innovation in Goldberg's politically tinged tales of the downtrodden, the cast-off, the confused and dispirited. There are honky-tonk gyrations here the likes of which you probably thought you'd never hear played unironically again ("Goodbye Johnny Thunder"). This last is more a sign of Goldberg's skills with elegy than of anything else: his sassy tribute to the punk

Writers Friendship Edited and compiled by Robert Sward Hold the Audience: A Brief Memoir of John Berryman
by Laurence Lieberman In the middle of the winter of 1969, shortly following the announcement of the awarding of the National Book Award in poetry to John Berryman's volume His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, the University of Illinois invited Mr. Berryman to visit the campus for a few days and present a couple of readings from his work. The letter of invitation was sent some months before the suggested date for the readings, but we received no reply from Mr. Berryman. Finally, a couple of weeks before the date scheduled for his arrival, we phoned the poet, and he warmly agreed to be our guest. Apparently, he had misplaced our letter and then had forgotten about the matter, thinking he had already replied in the affirmative. The performance itself was surely one of the most electric and memorable poetry readings I have ever attended. Mr. Berryman felt a great affection for his audience, so many of whom were seated in ardent adulation at his feet in the large front-room parlor, and he easily established a communion with a couple of the prettier girls in the front rows. He often seemed to address the lines of his poems, as well as the wonderful flow of anecdotes and reminiscences between poems, directly to those individual faces. And this quality of personal involvement and exchange gave more life to the experience for us all.

    John Berryman on Ike
Reading John Berryman's The Dream Songs , I discovered his paean (a slightly tongue-in-cheek one) to Eisenhower's way of speaking. It's #23, "The lay of Ike." The first stanza goes: This is the lay of Ike.
Here's to the glory of the Great Whiteawk
who has been runningererthings in recentech
in the UnitedIf your screen is black,
at the Point he was already terrificsick I'm just getting into Berryman so am not that familiar with his rhyme scheme, though in the preceding poem he rhymes ABCBCA on the first stanza and ABCCBA on the next two; I think the point is that Ike's so disjointed, even a poem about him can't keep a rhyme. (Though the last stanza has an AABCBC pattern.) It's interesting that Berryman does this to Ike's disjoint syntax, since his narrator, Henry, also depends on breaking all sorts of grammatical conventions; and another voice, Mr. Bones, speaks in an African-American dialect, as in #36: The high ones die, die. They die. You look up and who's there?
Easy, easy, Mr Bones. I is on your side.
    I smell your grief.

John Berryman, a talented scholar driven to write poetry, is best known for transforming his personal suffering into verse. Like Robert Frost and Randall Jarrell, he loved teaching poetry and felt most at home with literature and the humanities. For his own composition, he was adept at the song and sonnet but preferred large dramatic roles that altered his identity. He was influenced by Gerard Manley Hopkins, W. H. Auden, William Butler Yeats, and e. e. cummings; his aberrant syntax and multilevel language produced a poetic exhibitionism consistent with a flawed past and troubled mind.
