John Berryman and the Thirties. - book reviews
National Review June 24, 1988 by Jeffrey Meyers KAFKAESQUE JOHN BERRYMAN (1914-72) had a miserable childhood. He suffered from a weak father and a strong, seductive mother, and was haunted by nightmares of his parents' quarrels. To him, Martha Berryman was a monster who had driven her despised husband to suicide when John was 12"i can't quite see my father; I don't know him"and then focused her malign influence on himself. Mrs. Berryman devoured her son, an unwilling sexual substitute for his father, with an overwhelming passion.

'Life, friends, is boring': A little on John Berryman
I picked up Adam Kirsch’s The Wounded Surgeon: Confession and Transformation in Six American Poets after reading Michiko Kakutani’s review of it in the Times, and thus far I’ve been happy I did. I’ve read several chapters, but the one that I’ve found most interesting is on John Berryman. (The other poets Kirsch discusses are Lowell, Bishop, Jarrell, Schwarts, and Plath.)
Kirsch’s approach to Berryman begins with literary biography, and ends with a hefty section of close reading, focused mainly on the 77 Dream Songs . The strength of Kirsch’s 'generalist' approach is the way it inspires one to go out and read the writer named, if one hasn’t already (this is one of the overlooked functions of good criticism). I’d actually never read Berryman, and now I have—-all to the good.
The weakness might be in Kirsch’s need to make a neat picture out of Berryman’s progress, which follows an only slightly tweaked ‘anxiety of influence’ shape. Here the dominant literary model is Yeats, whose impersonal grandiloquence Berryman had to eschew in order to find his own voice. I still haven’t read the early, Yeatsian Berryman, and I don’t contest Kirsch’s general claim that the

He got into a fight with Hemingway once in Key West. It was mainly Stevens, though, who got wounded; needing to take extra vacation time to allow his face to heal. Although Stevens was a large man, he was in his fifties at the time and Hemingway was twenty years his younger. Drinking was undoubtably involved. Add comment August 24, 2007

Above: John Berryman, Kevin Young "Staggering, swaggering, intoxicating": John Berryman achieved a poetry where (in the words of editor Kevin Young) "protagonists search for a lover or friend, ancestor or listener, with a recklessness that only Whitman allowed himself. . . . Berryman becomes Everyman attempting, falling short of, and often achieving greatness." Young's selection, the first new selection of Berryman's poems in over 30 years, encompasses the formal accomplishments of his early work, epitomized in the masterful Homage to Mistress Bradstreet ; the explosive and mesmerizing diction of Dream Songs , and his wrenching religious poems.
