Tuesday, August 07, 2007 Jack Benny In the summer of 65 the Beatles were playing at the Hollywood Bowl. I had a chance to get a ticket but passed because it conflicted with another show I wanted to see more – Jack Benny was at the Sahara’s Hotel in Vegas. Jack Benny is my comedy God. He’s been gone for over thirty years, comedy has evolved and changed since then but he remains my inspiration. And it’s hard to explain why if you’re not already familiar with him. For the most part he just stood stiffly on a stage. He rarely told jokes. He never did impressions. And yet no one could make me laugh like Jack Benny. If the secret of comedy is timing, Jack Benny was the master. He could get a two minute sustained laugh from just a reaction – ON THE RADIO. He started in vaudeville, hosted a top rated weekly radio program in the 30s and 40s, then moved seamlessly into television. He created a very specific persona for himself. Benny was supposedly very cheap. (In truth he was anything but.) He kept his money buried below his house in a vault with enough safeguards to keep Indiana Jones out. He was vain. Whenever asked, he claimed he was always 39. He considered himself as a virtuoso violinist although his playing sounded like a cat being tortured. Furthermore, Benny created a whole world around him – much like SEINFELD. Wherever he went he seemed to be harassed by the same goofy characters. It was as if there was a conspiracy. His reaction to all of this, his exasperation and unflagging comic dignity made it all hysterically funny.

During the depression and into the war years, comedy was the salve that kept our country together. Most people who remember radio remember the comedy shows with much warmth; for it helped us forget what was going on around us and allowed us to laugh at ourselves for just a moment. But radio provided comedians long before those horrible years. Many former vaudevillians were seeing great opportunities in radio. One problem, however, was what to do with the lack of audience? Radio required projecting a personality through a box and not via a live audience. These former stage comedians based their humor and timing on the response of their audience. Now they could not hear their audience and had to judge how best to deliver their lines. Some succeeded, but others, despite stage and film successes, failed miserably. Vaudevillians like Bert Lahr, Al Jolson and even Jimmy Durante and Weber and Fields never really had successful radio careers, yet enjoyed success in other media. But early radio comedy was very much like vaudeville. One early success was Billy Jones and Ernie Hare. Their radio careers were built around a sponsor and listeners knew them as The Happiness Boys , then later as The Interwoven Pair . As their sponsorship changed, so too did their name. Yes, I said "Benjamin Kubelsky". That was the name of the Waukegan, IL native who the world would come to know as Jack Benny (1894-1974). I wanted to say "who the world remembers as" instead of "would come to know as", but frankly, I'm not sure the world does remember Jack. A shame, really. Jack's timing, cast of characters, and his legendary stranglehold on his money made the perennial 39-year-old unique in the entertainment world. Jack's shows still rank highly on my list of favorites, easily surpassing anything on TV these days. Unfortunately, these shows are apparently only available on some PBS outlets, as is the case here in Orlando. The last nationally available airings that I am aware of were on The Comedy Channel (a predecessor of today's Comedy Central cable channel). Though that run didn't last nearly as long as I'd hoped, the editing was much superior to a previous run on the Family Channel. Ideally, I'd like to see the show return on a channel like Nick at Nite, but given the state of the programming on that particular operation, I'm not holding my breath. Instead of wasting my time and yours on a lengthy treatise here, let me suggest you check out the book

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 12/1/95 The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, Amos and Andy, Henry Aldrich and Duffy's Tavern. Radio used to feature all of them plus many other wonderful comedy shows and dramas. If you polled radio buffs as to which was the best show ever done, I'd be very surprised if The Jack Benny Program didn't place in the top three. It was one of the top shows for many years and, even today, when you can listen to some of the most popular shows of the day and wonder what anyone liked about them, it holds up. It really was a very funny show. One of the reasons, of course, was Jack Benny...a wonderful man and, as we shall see, a very brave one. Another was his writing staff, widely hailed as the best in radio. And still another was his supporting cast which included Don Wilson, Dennis Day, Sheldon Leonard, Mel Blanc, Benny Rubin, Phil Harris, Mary Livingstone and the very funny, gravel-throated Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. All of the supporting players had funny lines on the Benny show. So did the guest stars. Everyone had funny lines on the Benny show except, usually, Benny. Jack always let everyone else have the joke; his job was to react to them and, usually, be the butt of everyone else's comments. Benny didn't care if he got the laugh or the other guy got the laugh. He knew that if the show was funny, he'd be a hit, even if the audiences did spend most of their time laughing at what Dennis Day or Don Wilson said.
