IS CYBERSPACE A SPIRITUAL SPACE? By Margaret Wertheim
margarew@gte.net Many cyber-enthiusiasts have techno-religious yearnings and are convinced that cyberspace is a new kind a spiritual space. In her wonderful book, The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace: A History of Space from Dante to the Internet , Margaret Wertheim traces the history of western notions of space and how these have been informed by cultural, and particularly religious, concerns. From Dante's Inferno to today's Internet, there's a connection in the dualistic Western conception where body and soul are seen as two distinct spheres. Within this tradition, the immaterial has always been equated with with the spiritual. Such a confusion is not without dangers, Wertheim argues . The following essay is a shortened and excerpted version of chapter seven of her book. Margaret Wertheim is a science writer and commentator who has been particulary concerned with the relations between science and religion. Her previous book, Pythagoras Trousers , is a history of the relationship between physics and religion in Western culture.

PosadaSpace: a Skeletal Fine Art Virtual Environment

and Tim McFadden (tim.mcfadden@thinkone.com)
Abstract:
The 1998 artwork PosadaSpace is a virtual world exhibited in a decorated computer kiosk. Mike Mosher and Tim McFadden built it around the historic cartoon imagery of Jose Guadalupe Posada (and some other Mexican art) to investigate the appeal and narrative power of simple 2D sprites in defining and populating an interactive 3D world.

I. Preface:
In the spring and summer of 1998, Mike Mosher and Tim McFadden created a fine arts VR kiosk artwork called PosadaSpace. Mike designed its environments and component JPEGs, and painted an external facade for its computer. Tim programmed the world in VRML and JavaScript, as well as programming three predetermined paths for the viewer. This work however was the fruition of discussions between the two-an artist and a software engineer-dating back to the First Conference on Cyberspace in Austin, TX, in April 1990.

  • Benedikt, Michael 1935–
Benedikt is an American poet, critic of art, film, and music, and translator. (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 15-16.) Benedikt's poetry strikes me as being New and Improved, like soap. This is too bad, because his first book, The Body , was so good. In Sky he is slicker, more clever, more polished in his own Ogden Nashian unpolished way, but he has lost the sense of discovery that he had in The Body . There's no doubt that many of the poems in Sky are funny, but beyond that they don't do much for me…. I do like it when Benedikt's humor fastens on mundane or arbitrary things. He gives you a sense of the completely arbitrary structure of many aspects of life…. Benedikt's strategy is to take things literally, as they manifest themselves; this gives his poetry a point of view slanted enough and yet familiar enough so that ordinary things become strange and humorous and random. But the... [The entire page is 787 words long]
