    Biographical note
Novelist and dramatist, daughter of a barber named Johnston, but went with a relative whom she called father to Surinam, of which he had been appointed Governor. He, however, died on the passage thither, and her childhood and youth were passed there. She became acquainted with the celebrated slave Oronoko, afterwards the hero of one of her novels. Returning to England in 1658 she married Behn, a Dutch merchant, but was a widow at the age of 26. She then became attached to the Court, and was employed as a political spy at Antwerp. Leaving that city she cultivated the friendship of various playwrights, and produced many plays and novels, also poems and pamphlets. The former are extremely gross, and are now happily little known. She was the first English professional authoress. Among her plays are The Forced Marriage Abdelazer The Rover The Debauchee , etc., and her novels include Oronoko and The Nun . The former of these was the first book to bring home to the country a sense of the horrors of slavery, for which let her have credit. Executive summary: Oroonoko, the History of the Royal Slave British dramatist and novelist, baptized at Wye, Kent, in 1640. Her father, John Johnson, was a barber. While still a child she was taken out to Surinam, then an English possession, from which she returned to England in 1658, when it was handed over to the Dutch. In Surinam Aphra learned the history, and acquired a knowledge of the African prince Oroonoko and his beloved Imoinda, whose adventures she has related in her novel, Oroonoko . On her return she married Mr. Behn, a London merchant of Dutch extraction. The wit and abilities of Mrs. Behn brought her into high estimation at court, and her husband having died by this time King Charles II employed her on secret service in the Netherlands during the Dutch war. At Antwerp she successfully accomplished the objects of her mission; and in the latter end of 1666 she wormed out of one Van der Aalbert the design formed by De Ruyter, in conjunction with the DeWitts, of sailing up the Thames and burning the English ships in their harbors. This she communicated to the English court, but although the event proved her intelligence to have been well founded, it was at the time disregarded. Disgusted with political service, she returned to England, and from this period she appears to have supported herself by her writings. Among her numerous plays are

(Pseudonym of Aphra Johnson or Aphra Amis; also Aphara, Ayfara, and Afray; also wrote under the pseudonyms Astrea and Astraea) English dramatist, novelist, poet, essayist, and translator.
    INTRODUCTION
Willing to endure seventeenth-century society's disapproval of women writing for pay, Behn became the first female to earn her living solely as an author, openly competing for recognition with the male writers who comprised the English literary establishment. Her works, like the literary endeavors of her male contemporaries, catered to the libertine tastes of King Charles II and his supporters through social and political satire as well as plots involving amorous intrigues and sexual promiscuity. Behn's verse, which tends to be less coarse than her dramas, often focuses either on lovers or the historical events of the era. Her most studied poems challenge social mores by freely discussing female sexual desire and questioning gender roles.
    Biographical Information
Most critical studies of Behn speculate about her early life, but Behn's birthplace and date of birth, as well as the identity of her parents, have never been conclusively established. However, it is generally agreed that she and her family sailed to Surinam in South America, most likely in 1663, and that her father, who had been appointed lieutenant-governor there, died en route. Behn lived in Surinam for several months before the Dutch takeover, and her impressions of the country were later recorded in her novel

    Lazy Luddite Log
Intended to be more a website than a weblog in the sense that I want to post particular topics that are non-time specific rather than have lots of "today I did this..." kind of stuff. But as a technophobic slacker I am using Blogger as a kind of 'short cut' to having a proper web site.
Who is Aphra Behn? I have gone and done something rather foolish: I have developed a crush on someone from the 1600s! Her name is Aphra Behn and she is fantastic. Or rather, in keeping with the nature of crushes, it is the impression I have formed of her that is fantastic. How accurate that impression is, is very much a matter of conjecture, for the life of Aphra is very much a maze or mirrors.
It all started some weeks ago. I happened to be visiting Wikipedia and glanced at the 'Feature Article' of that day. It was on the novel Oroonoko (1688) written by one Aphra Behn (1640?-1689) who is described as "the first professional female dramatist and novelist" in English history and also as someone who worked as a spy for Charles II. Her historical significance as a writer was only part of what attracted me. The notion of a 'she-spy' practicing her art in cavalier times fired my imagination, which I had recently been feeding with swashbuckling movies, and I resolved to get to know Aphra better.

    Behn, Aphra (ca 1640-1689)
page: Aphra Behn, known to her contemporaries as a "scandal" for both her writings and her flamboyant personal life, was one of the most influential dramatists of the late seventeenth century. Today, she is better known as a poet and novelist than playwright, and her extraordinary biography remains intriguing. Her birth name and parentage is a mystery. She was probably born in Wye, in 1640. Speculations about her early life include the possibility of several sets of parents. A biographical essay by "One of the Fair Sex," affixed to the collection of The Histories and Novels of the Late Ingenious Mrs. Behn (1696), maintains that Aphra was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of Canterbury, whom Aphra accompanied, along with a young boy supposed to be her brother, on a voyage to the West Indies in 1663. Johnson, who was to have had an official appointment, died on the way. The mother and two children lived for a while in Surinam, then a Dutch possession, and Behn's most famous novel, Oronooko or The Royal Slave (1688), is based on her experiences there.

Aphra Behn broke every rule. She was a spy, she was a writer, she was thrown in prison several times for her debts and her politics, she may or may not have been married and she had a live-in lover for nine years. Her origin a mystery, an unidentified child named Aphra traveled with a couple named Amis to Surinam (Dutch Guiana), then an English possession. Upon her return to England around the time of the Restoration, she may have married a London merchant named Behn. Her wit and beauty caught the eye of the royal court and she was employed by Charles II in secret service in The Netherlands. Unrewarded, and imprisoned for debt, she began to write to support herself. From 1670 until her death in 1689, Aphra Behn enjoyed commercial triumph. Her witty, vivacious comedies, such as The Rover (two parts, produced 1677 and 1681) and The Lucky Chance , were highly successful. She was well read, fluent in French and Italian with some Spanish, and she often adapted work by older dramatists. Her versatility, like her output, was immense, and in her day was rivaled only by that of her friend and colleague, John Dryden. Aphra Behn is considered the first professional English woman writer and originator of the novel in its modern form. This honor is often bestowed on Daniel Defoe, but Aphra Behn's

APHRA BEHN APHRA BEHN was an English dramatist, poetess, and novel writer, highly popular in the reign of Charles II, when nothing could exceed the licentiousness of the public stage, but the licentiousness of private manners. She continued to reside for some time in Antwerp, and is said to have entered all the gaieties and gallantries of the city. Why she returned to England does not appear; but sailing from Dunkirk she was wrecked on our coast, and was only saved by boats from the shore. At this period she could not have been much more than twenty-three or twenty-four years old, and it seems probable that during the rest of her life she was mainly indebted to her pen for support. Owens and Goodman succeed in composing an attractive and engaging text for undergraduate students as they suggest several lines of inquiry a student may use to examine the concept, definition, and the changing environment that collectively engender canonization.
In the Preface , the editors explain their choices of Shakespeare, the "most celebrated example of a 'canonical' author," and Aphra Behn, "one of the leading playwrights of her time" but not currently accepted into the canon, as foundations for this text. This course text-book examination contains two parts. Part I consists of seven chapters; the first and last, written by Goodman, address themselves specifically to the canon, and the middle chapters, each written by a different author, concentrate on Shakespeare as a theatre poet
