Any healthy man can go without food for two days - but not without poetry.
Charles Baudelaire
Genius is no more than childhood recaptured at will, childhood equipped now with man's physical means to express itself, and with the analytical mind that enables it to bring order into the sum of experience, involuntarily amassed.
Charles Baudelaire
I consider it useless and tedious to represent what exists, because nothing that exists satisfies me. Nature is ugly, and I prefer the monsters of my fancy to what is positively trivial.
Charles Baudelaire
It is by universal misunderstanding that all agree. For if, by ill luck, people understood each other, they would never agree.

Charles Pierre Baudelaire was born in Paris on April 9, 1821, and educated at the Coll¨ge Louis-le-Grand. His boyhood and adolescence were unhappy, for his father died when he was six years old, and he disliked his stepfather and resented his mother for having married him. Opposed to his choice of a literary career and hoping to distract him, his parents sent him on a sea voyage to India. He left the ship, however, and returned to Paris more determined than ever to devote himself to writing. In an effort to solve his financial problems he began to write critical journalism. His first important publications were two booklets of art criticism, Les salons (1845-1846), in which he discussed with acute insight the paintings and drawings of such contemporary French artists as Honor© Daumier, ‰douard Manet, and Eug¨ne Delacroix. He was first acclaimed as a skilled literary craftsman in 1848, when his translations from English of the work of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe began to appear. Encouraged by that success and inspired by his enthusiasm for Poe, with whom he felt a strong affinity, Baudelaire continued to translate Poe’s stories until 1857.

Poe and Baudelaire: A Vast Ocean Apart
Amy Jo Roy The relationship that Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Pierre Baudelaire have is definitely one of interest due to its peculiar nature. One man was a relatively well-known American author during the middle 1800s, while the other was an observant figure at the edge of French literary circles of the same time. Poe was a popular writer, yet not one that was totally accepted among America's distinguished line of authors due to his periodic gruesome subject matter. Baudelaire was considered to be an erratic, distant character who led a miserable life and who wrote morbid poems concerned with death and decay. Neither is as dark and dreary or as preoccupied with death as a reader might first imagine. Only after further thought and continued reading will an audience realize the down-to-earth subjects that both authors try to understand and explain in their individual, artistic means of expression. Separated by the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean and the cultural differences of their homelands, the two great authors never met. However, Poe and Baudelaire seem to have a "teacher-student" or "father-son" relationship that is based on one's interpretation of the other. Charles Baudelaire began his career by translating Edgar Allan Poe's works into his native French. Although a fluent English speaker, Baudelaire concentrated on Poe's short stories and longer works because poetry was rather difficult to translate within the constraints of the language. Only one poem of Poe's, "The Raven," was successfully translated into French by Charles Baudelaire (Baudelaire 32).

On this day in 1857 Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal was published. Critics now regard it as the one of the most important and influential collections of 19th century poetry, but the newspapers of the day thought it full of "all the putresence of the human heart," and the courts excised six poems found to be "in contempt of the laws which safeguard religion and morality." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Paris Spleen (Le Spleen de Paris)

http://www.rleggat.com/photohistory/history/artists.htm
ARTISTS and Photography The invention of the Daguerreotype caused considerable concern to many artists, who saw their means of livelihood coming to an end. Delaroche is credited with claiming that painting was now dead, whilst it is said that Sir William Ross, on his death-bed in 1860, commented sadly that "it was all up with future miniature painting." It is also claimed, but with scanty evidence, that Turner, looking at an early daguerreotype, commented that he was glad he had had his day! Charles Baudelaire despised photography as being a product of industry. He felt it provided an impression of reality that did not have the 'spiritual momentum' which came from the imagination. Whilst reviewing a photographic exhibition in 1859, clearly saw the need to put photography firmly in its place: "If photography is allowed to supplement art in some of its functions, it will soon have supplanted or corrupted it altogether....its true duty..is to be the servant of the sciences and arts - but the very humble servant, like printing or shorthand, which have neither created nor supplemented literature.... "Let it rescue from oblivion those tumbling ruins, those books, prints and manuscripts which time is devouring, precious things whose form is dissolving and which demand a place in the archives of our memory - it will be thanked and applauded.

Charles Baudelaire, born April 9, 1821, Paris, France, died Aug. 31, 1867, Paris. Charles-pierre Baudelaire French poet, translator, and literary and art critic whose reputation rests primarily on Les Fleurs du mal (1857; The Flowers of Evil), which was perhaps the most important and influential poetry collection published in Europe in the 19th century. Similarly, his Petits poèmes en prose (1868; “Little Prose Poems”) was the most successful and innovative early experiment in prose poetry of the time. MP3 Songs
  • A frenzied passion for art is a canker that devours everything else. The life of our city is rich in poetic and marvelous subjects. We are enveloped and steeped as though in an atmosphere of the marvelous; but we do not notice it. The dandy should aspire to be uninterruptedly sublime. He should live and sleep in front of a mirror.

Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867)
Baudelaire and Rops first met through the editor Auguste Poulet-Malassis In a letter written to Edouard Manet, May 11 1865, the poet said:
"Rops is the one true artist - what I and perhaps I alone mean by artist - that I have found in Belgium!" Rops for his part said:
"I was, I believe, not merely a friend, but the most faithful and respectful companion to Baudelaire, I "lightened his sadness in Belgium", as he describes it in a dedication which is very dear to me...." The poet visited Namur and the family château of many times. In 1866 Rops produced the frontispiece for Baudelaire’s "Epaves" published by Poulet-Malassis. Baudelaire found this frontispiece to be "filled with ingenuity". "This oh so lively Monsieur Rops
will never win a prize from Rome,
though his talent is as vast
as the pyramid of Chéops"
