66. An Awfully Big Adventure
J.M. barrie s character is an artful gathering of sir james s own childhood experiences in Scotland and the precious time he shared with the Davies family
http://www.amrep.org/past/peter/peter1.html
An Awfully Big ADVENTURE
by Michelle Powell On the morning of April 6, 1960, the New York Times announced: "BARRIE'S PETER PAN KILLED BY A LONDON SUBWAY TRAIN." Newspapers around the English-speaking world played with the idea that an "immortal" a publishing executive by the name of Peter Davies had ended his life. Shocking notices like, "PETER PAN STOOD ALONE TO DIE" and "PETER PAN'S DEATH LEAP" silenced other important news of the day. An article in the Daily Express of London read: "Until he died at 68 [he was actually 63] Peter Davies was Peter Pan. He was the Little Boy Who Never Grew Up; the boy who believed in fairies. The name was a gift to him from playwright Sir James Barrie, and Peter Davies hated it all his life. But he was never allowed to forget it until, as a shy, retiring publisher, he fell to his death on Tuesday night." The Daily Express informed its readers not of Mr. Davies' publishing accomplishments but of the loathing he felt about being associated with Peter Pan. Davies' life was an unhappy one; despite many attempts to distance himself, he felt the Never Never Land pirate-killer overshadowed him. The coroner pronounced Davies' death a suicide, remarking that "the balance of [his] mind was disturbed." We will never understand why Davies detested his connection to the character that thrills so many. But despite the public's beliefs, Peter Davies was not the only model for Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie's character is an artful gathering of Sir James's own childhood experiences in Scotland and the precious time he shared with the Davies family of London. Barrie masterfully sculpted his Peter Pan play and novel from a mass of facts and fantasy that is difficult to untangle. Nevertheless, Barrie's adventure story was the consequence of his untold search for love;

James Matthew Barrie 1860 - 1937
Early Life
Thrums is Born
At Kirriemuir he still had to persuade his family he would earn his living as a writer. He saw a job advertised by the "Nottingham Journal" for someone to write leading articles. James sent away a University essay and got the job. Later, when the owners had to economise, he was out of work and came home. Listening once more to his mother’s tales, he thought he could turn them into an article. Kirriemuir was to be called "Thrums". The piece was sent to a London newspaper. Back came the reply, "I like that Scotch thing. Any more of those?"
Success as a Writer
In 1885, he moved to London, again with Alexander’s help. He worked hard on a wide range of articles for newspapers. This brought him regular money at last - £20 a month! He had "Auld Licht Idylls" published in 1888 and people liked the humour in it. Many successful novels followed and James was thrilled when Robert Louis Stevenson wrote to him from Samoa.
The Origins of Peter Pan
J M Barrie married an actress in 1894, and when they were on honeymoon in Switzerland they bought a St Bernard puppy. This dog was to become an important part of a future play.

77. The History Of Wendy
It is wellknown that J.M. barrie s work was often inspired by the antics J.M. barrie and The Lost Boys, Andrew Birkin, 1979, Clarkson N. Potter, Inc.

The History of the Name "Wendy"
A lot of people will argue about whether or not the name Wendy was created by J.M. Barrie for the character "Wendy Darling" in his books about Peter Pan. Is it true? Yes and no...
Wendy of Eons Past
Most of my life I thought the name Wendy is derivative of Gwendolyn or some variation of a way-way-back historical name you'd never want to assign to any young girl. This is only partially true. A Doctor of Folklore ( Leslie Ellen Jones, Ph.D. ) told me some interesting stuff about the names Gwendolyn, Guinivere, and Wendy. Gwendolyn and Guinevere are etymologically related in that they are both Welsh names beginning with the element "gwen-" which means "white/dazzling/holy" and is a *very* popular and productive name element for both female and male names. (The Welsh form of Guinevere is Gwenhwyfar, "white phantom/shadow", which is an exact cognate of the Irish name Finnabhair, the name of the daughter of Medb and Aillill of Connacht, in the Ulster cycle). Personally, if Wendy is derived from a Welsh name, my candidate would be Gwendydd (pronounced Gwen-deethe, "white day"), which was the name of Myrddin (Merlin)'s sister (as in the poem Ymddiddan Myrddin a Gwendydd ei Chwaer, the Conversation of Merlin and Gwendydd his Sister). Barrie's "Wendy" was invented at a time when ancient Welsh names were becoming popular again, as an expression of intellectual nationalism. Mail from someone who does genealogical research shows that "Wendy" might have been in use before Peter Pan and might even have been a boy's name:

Dionysus and Peter Pan
Dionysiaca Creators can be quite conscious and explicit about the relationship between flight and their creative endeavours. Barrie saw his creative spirit in Icarian terms. His `other half', which he called M'connachie, was 'the fanciful one', a bird-like being free to defy, time, space, gravity and death without fear. Both authors illustrate the workings of the child's id or infantile unconscious, Nonnus by a free-floating stream of exuberant fantasy, and Barrie by a symbolic Neverland inhabited by archetypal figures that reflects a struggle to come to terms with adulthood. Both Nonnus and Barrie were concerned with the theatre. Barrie was most famous as a playwright, Nonnus dealt with the god of the theatre, and events which are theatrical (expressed through mime, dance, loud noises, masks, disguises or the exotically amazing) and which explore the boundaries of reality and illusion (a major theme of Barrie's plays, too). Of both authors it could be said that their works reflect `the bubbling turmoil of (their) own half-formulated wishes and ambitions'. , though in view of our ignorance of Nonnus the man it cannot be ruled out that he consciously reproduced the contents of the infantile unconscious by an act of empathy and imagination. We turn now to several other themes in Nonnus and Barrie where comparison is illuminating.

79. Peter Pan In Scarlet
Peter Pan in Scarlet, the official sequel to Peter Pan by JM barrie. Great Ormond Street Hospital benefits from barrie s legacy for many years to come.
http://www.peterpaninscarlet.com/goshcc.php
Site by: Exploding Monkey Ltd Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC) Sir James Barrie wrote Peter Pan Peter Pan in Scarlet will ensure that Great Ormond Street Hospital benefits from Barrie's legacy for many years to come. While the NHS pays for the day to day running costs of the hospital the charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC), was set up to help both medical staff and patients by making it possible to provide the best and most up to date equipment, create a better environment and allow for parents to stay in a specially built patients' hotel. The charity also supports the work of the Institute of Child Health which carries out research into medical problems and treatment for some of the rarest and most life-threatening conditions. GOSHCC needs to raise £150 million over the next five years to help rebuild and refurbish two thirds of the hospital, buy vital equipment, continue to fund research and provide further accommodation for 1,000 parents a week so that they can stay near their children. All royalties generated from Peter Pan in Scarlet will go directly towards helping GOSH achieve this goal. To find out more about the work GOSHCC does visit
