    James M. Barrie (1860-1937) , Scottish author and dramatist, best known for his character Peter Pan. The play Peter Pan or, The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up was first performed in 1904 and published in 1928; All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, "Oh, why can't you remain like this for ever!" This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end. Other titles in the Peter Pan series are;

Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), was a Scottish novelist and playwright, the son of a weaver. As a graduate of Edinburgh University he became a newspaper journalist on the Nottingham Journal and then in London. He first caught public attention with a selection of Scottish sketches, Auld Licht Idylls and A Window On Thrums , based on his home in Kirriemuir, County Angus. His

At the forefront of the Edwardian cult of childhood was Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie's play about a boy who would not grow up. Between 1904 and 1915, Peter Pan played on the London stage to sold-out crowds every Christmas. Peter Pan also ushered in a greater commercialization of children's literature. Peter Pan in Kensington Garden, published in 1906 and illustrated by Arthur Rackham, was the Christmas gift of choice for children swept up in the Neverland of the fairy story. After Peter Pan, the book industry began to produce not only more elaborate editions of children's books, like Rackham's, but also better and cheaper editions. The Edwardians' idealized children also became an ideal market. Barrie, who was made a baronet in 1913, knew the London literary market well. Born in the provincial Scottish town of Kirriemuir, Barrie went to London to embark on a journalism career. For the St. James Gazette he wrote a series of columns about his native town, which in the Gazette he called "Thrums." In 1888, Barrie published Auld Licht Idylls

The Chronicles of
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Conan Doyle and James M. Barrie
Early in his writing career Conan Doyle became involved with a new magazine called "The Idler." Through this connection he was able to meet other writers. Jerome K. Jerome of Three Men in a Boat was one of the magazine's founders. Other writers for the magazine included Isreal Zangwill, Eden Phillpotts and Gilbert Parker. That's also where Conan Doyle first came to know the man who would write Peter Pan , James Barrie. Barrie and Conan Doyle both Scottish, both had attended Edinburgh University and both were avid cricket players. Conan Doyle played on Barrie's Allah-Akabarries team. The team name was a combination of Barrie's last name and an Arabic phrase meaning, "May the Lord help us." When Conan Doyle wrote about his five-foot-one friend he said he was a man, "about whom there is nothing small except his body."

Purchase Books by Sir James M. Barrie
O Barrie, a Biography ) suddenly enlightened me. Legend dies hard in England, which is why, even having learned the details of his career, his own countrymen will persist in declaring the author of Peter Pan to be a sentimentalist whose plays were written with a pen dipped in a mixture of syrup and tears; who saw life through spectacles heavily rose-tinted, and who was the possessor of that dubious gift of the gods the "heart of a child". But of American critics I have more hope, for it is to their credit that, when considering a man, they insist upon disregarding the popular misconceptions of a gullible public, and concentrate upon the discovery of what he was like at those moments when, seeking escape, he shut himself away from the world. And for this reason they will, I believe, appreciate this study of a man who was a considerable artist; a study which must satisfy the seekers after truth, as certainly as it must annoy those who prefer to have their false fancies preserved. From a study of Barrie's work it should not be difficult for future generations, if they are sufficiently interested, to draw some conclusions as to its creator's character. With a writer, it is said, the style is the man. And up to a point the argument is sound enough. But I think there can be no doubt in Barrie's case that a better understanding of the plays themselves is to be gained from some knowledge of their author's peculiar temperament, and of the circumstances in which a few of them were written.

Famous Scots
- Sir J M Barrie (1860-1937)
Born in Kirriemuir on 9 May 1860 in the house pictured here, James Mathew Barrie was the 9th child of a weaver. Even as a child, he wrote for the school magazine and drama group (in which he also acted). He took a Master of Arts degree at Edinburgh University and after a short spell with the Nottingham Journal he moved to London in 1885. Barrie wrote for a number of papers and published his first book in 1887 and subsequent stories established his reputation and popularity. "Auld Licht Idylls" was a series of racy sketches of humble life in Kirriemuir (renamed 'Thrums' in the book, after the word in weaving for the ends of the warp threads). These stories began what was to become known, somewhat disparagingly, as the "Kailyard School" of Scottish fiction. A number of novels followed including "The Little Minister" and "Margaret Ogilvy" , the latter a tender tribute to his mother. But Barrie was now turning more to writing plays and even an opera (in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, no less). In 1897 a stage version of "The Little Minister" was a great popular success and he went on to create many of his well known works such as "The Admirable Crichton" in 1902. A story "The Little White Bird" published in 1902 had ideas which Barrie carried forward to his best known work "Peter Pan". This was first performed in 1904 and was followed by

Review/comment: After seeing the show at the Westport Country Playhouse, I was extremely disappointed. Perhaps, it was because the theme was outdated: What would have happened had we chosen another career path? Today, we are in a world where people change their career paths four to seven times in a lifetime. No longer does someone get a job at the Bank after graduating college, and stay there for forty years. Companies are bought and sold. Technology often demands that we learn new skills to adjust ourselves to the new economy. This change is not reflected in the Barrie play. I might add, that most people who change paths, do it because they are compelled to do it. Society says' Take a chance. It's not better, it's very different. So for the audience, most of whom were older the play was a puzzle with no solution.
Title: We Essentially Do Not Change
Subject: Review/comment: Title: Subject: Review/comment: I have no idea what made me wake up today and search for "Dear Brutus," but I was happy to see the complete text here and reacquaint myself with it. I remember seeing a production of the play on television many years ago. I believe this was pre-PBS. There was a channel that broadcast a different play every week which was repeated each night of that week. I thought the play quite enchanting at the time and remembered the "might-have-beens," although it seems rather dated now in tone. It's sort of a drawing room comedy fancifully mixed with a heavy dose of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Interesting concept. I agree with Mr. Wilson, it's not about changing careers; it suggests that our characters are set quite early in life and, if we had a chance to go back and change the course of our lives, we would not change the nature of our character. I wonder if any of the kinescopes remain of that production I saw, I'd love to see it again.
