    ESSAYS
Thoughts on Carl Barks's Hundredth Birthday
    By Michael Barrier

Carl Barks in his study at Grants Pass, Oregon, on July 9, 1998. Photo by Michael Barrier. [Click here to read feedback about Barks and this essay.] I last saw Carl Barks in July 1998, a few months after his ninety-seventh birthday, when my wife and I drove down to Oregon from Seattle with friends. We spent several hours with Carl, visiting him at his home and then taking him to dinner at his favorite local restaurant. He was in a buoyant mood; he had just put his lawsuit against his erstwhile managers behind him, through a settlement that was very much to his liking. But he was greatly changed, much slower and weaker, since we had last seen him, in 1991. He was not mentally impaired in the least, but to be as quick-witted as Carl Barks takes energy, and Carl no longer had very much of it. We left Grants Pass the next day doubting that we would ever see him again but hoping that he would live to see his hundredth birthday. Sadly, he didn't.
Barks as cartoonist and as painter: the original cover for Donald Duck
Barks's oil paintings of the ducks were of course the source of that prosperity, and of much of that renown. Barks was a painter of ducks for about as long as he was an author of comic-book stories about them, and his financial rewards from the paintings were certainly much greater than those he got from his stories. For years before he died, it was reproductions of his paintings, and not panels from his greatest stories, that were ubiquitous as illustrations for tributes to him. The paintings, and the lithographs made from them, now command such prices that it is hard to imagine them hanging anywhere but in the homes of the very wealthy. Some of Barks's admirers, I understand, believe that the paintings have surpassed in importance the comic-book stories that gave them birth.

    Barks, Carl ( March 27, 1901 - August 25, 2000 )
Known among Duck fans as "The Duck Man", "The Good Artist", Carl Barks was the main Duck stories writer and artist from 1942 to 1966. Like Floyd Gottfredson , he started work at the Disney Studio (in November 1935) as an in-betweener. In May 1936, he graduated to the Story Department, where he wrote Donald Duck animated shorts with Harry Reeves and Jack Hannah. Barks and Hannah were assigned the task of drawing the first Donald Duck comic book ( Donald Duck Four Color , "Pirate Gold") in August 1942. Barks left the Studio in November to start work on his own comic strips. He was eventually hired by Western Publishing to write a Donald Duck ten-pager ( , April 1943), and continued writing and drawing Duck stories until 1966. Barks created many secondary characters (Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose, ...), one of whom soon became the new star. Uncle Scrooge first appeared in December 1947 ( DD FC 178 , "Christmas on Bear Mountain"); he was not even a foil to Donald but a mere plot gimmick. Barks used him again to that effect in later stories, and the character gradually became a major figure. After retiring, Barks continued scripting stories (especially

    Beasts, Machines, and Nature
    by Garth Danielson
Dell Four Color 9 Carl was born March 27, 1901, near Merrill Oregon, a small town near the Oregon California border, to William and Arminta Barks. Carl was their second child, his older brother Clyde had been born the year before. The family farmed wheat on a section of land and lived there for several years. Carl started school in the rural school system, walking 2 miles each day each way, joining the 8 to 10 kids he remembers going to that one-room school. Rural life is often lonely and Carl was a shy kid, with a growing hearing problem. His parents were busy running the family farm and did not have much time to spend with their boys. Carl did not have much in common with his brother and there were very few other children to play with. He spent much of his spare time drawing, often copying from the newspaper cartoonists of the time. Carl continued in his one room school, completing the 8 th grade in 1916, the year his mother died. This same year Carl took a mail order correspondence program in cartooning from the Landon Schools. He only finished a few classes before giving it up for work. The war was on and there was money to be made in the hay fields, $5 a day. This was followed by a long series of short-time labor jobs. It was these early jobs that Barks would later draw from to vex Donald in so many of his wonderful stories. A couple of years earlier Barks had started selling cartoons to the

Er übernahm damals die Charaktere aus den Trickfilmen und den Zeitungscomics und arbeitete nach und nach die heute bekannten Charaktermerkmale der Ducks heraus. Who is Carl Barks? So begins Donald Ault's enlightening introduction to a volume of interviews that tells us just that, and indeed a great deal more—making the reader wonder how it could be that the man behind the creation of Disney's Scrooge McDuck, hundreds of Donald Duck comics, and many other memorable characters was himself never identified, until he was in his late 50s, by a fan named Malcolm Willits. In the first book of its kind, Ault has, with some kind of superhuman drive and focus, not only provided the answer to this question in a careful selection of interviews presented chronologically from the first (by Willits 1962, first published 1968) to the last (Ault, 2000); he has succeeded in showing for all the world the phenomenal and multifaceted genius of Carl Barks (1901-2000) through the artist's own words. The man whom many consider the greatest comic book artist of all time is here revealed as a master draftsman, painter, storyteller, and finally, a lucid and sincere conversationalist who is known the world over through images : Uncle Scrooge diving into his money bin, Donald Duck going in for a haircut to instead get his ass trimmed. Whomever you are, whatever your involvement with comics and/or animation, more than a few of such images persist in the memory—and they are the work of Carl Barks.

The quality of his scripts and drawings earned him the nick names The Duck Man and The Good Duck Artist.
    Biography
Barks was born in Merrill, Oregon to William Barks and his wife Arminta Johnson. He had an older brother named Clyde. His paternal grandfather was named David Barks and his maternal grandparents were Carl Johnson and his wife Suzanna Massey, but little else is known about his family.
    Childhood
According to Carl's description of his childhood he was a rather lonely child. His parents owned one square mile of land that served as their farm. The nearest neighbor lived half a mile away but he was more an acquaintance to his parents than a friend. The closest school was about two miles away and Carl had to walk that distance every day. The rural area had few children though and Barks later remembered that his school had about eight or ten students including him.
The lessons lasted from nine o'clock in the morning to four o'clock in the afternoon and then he had to return to the farm. There he remembered not having anybody to talk to as his parents were busy and he had little in common with his brother.
