Postage Stamp Seventh in Legends of Hollywood Series

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The U.S. Postal Service today honored film and TV star Lucille Ball with the issuance of the 34-cent Lucille Ball commemorative postage stamp.
The Lucille Ball stamp first day of issue ceremony took place this afternoon, the date of her birth, at the Hollywood History Museum, located in the historic Max Factor Building in Hollywood.
"It's a pleasure to be here today as we continue our celebration of Hollywood legends with a stamp that honors America's Queen of Comedy, Lucille Ball," said Alan C. Kessler, a member of the presidentially appointed Postal Service Board of Governors, who dedicated the stamp.
"'Lucy,' as she was fondly called by millions of adoring fans, was one of America's most admired, beloved and talented actresses of the 20th century. Now she joins other Hollywood notables—including Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock and Marilyn Monroe—who have also been featured on U.S. postage stamps in recognition of their contributions to the entertainment industry," said Kessler. Joining Kessler was Johnny Grant, chairman of the Walk of Fame and the honorary mayor of Hollywood, who presided over the ceremony. Other participants were Fred Ball, brother of Lucille Ball; Donelle Dadigan, founder and president, Hollywood History Museum; Jean Picker Firstenberg, director and CEO, American Film Institute; and actress Virginia Mayo.

Lucille Ball
Lucille Desiree Ball was born on August 6, 1911, in a small town near Jamestown, New York. At 15, she enrolled in a drama school in New York City. However, after twelve months (attending with classmate Bette Davis) the acting coach told Lucy that she wasn't talented and should go into something else. Dejected, she became a soda fountain clerk at a drug store, and also sold hotdogs at an amusement park. Lucy repeatedly auditioned unsuccessfully for Broadway chorus lines before turning to modeling. Using the name Diane Belmont, she became a model in fashion designer Hattie Carnegie’s studio and soon won national exposure as the Chesterfield Cigarette Girl in 1933. From the early 1930s through the late 1940s, Ball appeared in over 60 films. She was under contract to the Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) studio for seven years, playing leading roles in a number of low-budget movies. Some of her more notable films included Stage Door (1937), with Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers; The Affairs of Annabel Five Came Back Dance, Girl, Dance

Everyone loves Lucy. Well, not everyone but pretty close. Born on August 6th, 1911 in Celoron, New York, this snappy little red head lays claim to the titles of television comedienne, producer, and actress. Her first movie roll was a chorus girl in "Roman Scandals" in 1934. After appearing in over 60 films, Ball played a crazy wife to a serious banker for the CBS radioprogram, "My Favorite Husband." After four years CBS proposed the idea of changing the show to television. Ball would only do it if her real-life husband Desi Arnaz played her TV husband. The members of CBS were skeptical about a red head housewife and Cuban bandleader as a believable couple, but the show was an overnight success. Lucy was funny, sexy, and won the world over with her crazy schemes. Ball continued filming during her pregnancy and the public kept a close eye on the impending birth. Over 44 million peoplewatched as Lucy "gave birth" to Little Ricky. Coincidentally the day this particular episode aired, Ball gave birth to a baby boy who she named Desi Jr.

b Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, 6 Aug 1911; d Los Angeles, 26 Apr 1989). Actress, comedian, and television producer. Lucille Ball created one of television's most enduring comic characters, Lucy, who starred in several series on CBS from 1951 to 1974. Her first television series, I Love Lucy , remains one of the touchstones of American popular culture and has probably been seen by more people more often than any other program in history. Ball's father died when she was 4. Her mother remarried and left the Jamestown area four years later, but Ball remained, living with relatives. As an adolescent she was active in school and community theater projects. At age 15 Ball went to New York City to study acting and supported herself by modeling. She briefly appeared in Broadway chorus lines, but her first noticeable role was as a showgirl in the 1933 movie musical Roman Scandals , starring Eddie Cantor. Encouraged by the initial success, Ball moved to Hollywood and appeared in numerous movies for RKO Pictures and MGM. For almost 20 years she was a respected actress, comfortable in musicals, comedies, and dramas. From 1947 to 1951 her comic talents were on display in the CBS radio series My Favorite Husband . CBS wanted to transfer the show to television, as a live situation comedy from New York City. Ball resisted, preferring to costar with her husband, Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz, and stay close to her West Coast home. Arnaz and executive producer Jess Oppenheimer devised a technique to film a weekly comedy before a live Hollywood audience.
