TEENAGE LUCILLE BALL FASHION MODEL Rest in Peace Dear Lucy........ We Remember You With Love!!! August 6th 1911 - April 26th 1989 The Determination of the Little Queen by Amy S. Wiggin Decades before she became a star on our television screen. Little Lucille was looking for a way to follow her dreams. Lucille was bored with her little town. And the tiny queen was restless, wanted to add some jewels to her crown. She thought that drama school was her ticket to become a star. Sadly she didn’t get very far. They said she couldn’t sing or dance. Our Little Queen knew that there had to be a chance. There had to be. So the Little Queen went to the House of Carnegie. Hattie was her name and in the 1920’s the fashion world was her claim to fame. Hattie was a mother hen who took all her employees under her wing. The young girls modeled everything from bridal gowns, hats and faux pearl rings. Lucille was the youngest of all of Hattie’s baby chicks. Hattie knew she had potential, and she wanted her to learn all that she could and wanted her to learn quick. If she was going to make it in Hollywood

Lucille Desiree Ball, the undisputed first lady of television comedy, was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began studying drama at the age of 15. As a young adult, she supported herself in Manhattan as a model and a poster girl while trying to get work on Broadway chorus lines. Her modeling job as the Chesterfield Cigarette Girl in 1933 led to her first Hollywood role as one of the Goldwyn Girls in the Eddie Cantor film "Roman Scandals." Numerous bit parts followed throughout the 1930s but by the following decade Ball was considered to be a preeminent comic actress in feature films, with such credits as "Stage Door," "Room Service," "The Big Street," "DuBarry Was a Lady," and "Sorrowful Jones." Lucille Ball met her husband and future show-business partner, Desi Arnaz, on the set of an RKO picture in 1940. She continued pursuing film stardom for the next several years, trading in on her sex appeal as well as her sharp wit. Not achieving the kind of success she desired, Ball decided to try her hand at radio. Beginning in 1948, she played the daffy wife on the three-year series "My Favorite Husband." It was here that she developed a broader style of humor, something she would use to great advantage on her next project, the television series "I Love Lucy." After her 25 years in the business, this vehicle made Ball a household name.

One of television's best-loved entertainers, Lucille Ball was also one of most powerful executives in show business. She started out as a Ziegfeld girl, then moved to Hollywood and worked her way up from bit parts to lead roles in B-movies. Stardom seemed to have passed her by, but at the age of 40 she moved from movies to television and starred with her husband, Desi Arnaz, in the pioneering sitcom I Love Lucy (1951-57), in which she was finally able to display her genius for slapstick comedy. As owner of Desilu Productions, she was the first woman to head a Hollywood studio.

    Lucille Ball Takes The Cake
From the Pioneer Local relates Mark Seaman's six-tier cake which was a Tribute to Luclle Ball that won The National Wedding Cake Competition in Tulsa, Okla. last September.
"Purple was one of her favorite colors and she loved orchids," Seaman said, noting that an orchid dress that put Ball on Hollywood's first best-dressed list.
He focused on her younger, more glamorous years when Ball was a model and aspiring starlet prior to her popular television situation comedies that aired throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
"The colors and textures of her gowns lent themselves well to design elements of a wedding cake," Seaman explained, describing inspiration he found in a book about Ball.
Producers from The Food Network will air an hour-long program of the competition on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, as part of a The Wedding Bowl Night marathon. However if you miss Wedding Bowl, you can view the actual Lucille Ball cake at Seaman's Marked for Dessert: The Neighborhood Bakeshop, in Libertyville.

Claim: Television comedienne Lucille Ball claimed radio transmissions picked up on her fillings led to the capture of Japanese spies.
    Status: Undetermined.
    Origins:
A familiar plot employed in numerous television sitcom episodes is the plight of the hapless character who, having recently undergone some dental work (such as the installation of fillings or braces), begins to pick up radio broadcasts through his teeth. What would you say to a plot that involved a character whose reception of strange radio transmissions through her fillings led to the capture of a Japanese spy during World War II, with the incident later being incorporated into a Broadway musical? Sounds too wacky even for an episode of Gilligan's Island ? It's been reported as a true story, once which allegedly happened to one of the biggest stars in TV sitcom history: Lucille Ball.
