Christoph Wolff
Johann Sebastian Bach
The Learned Musician Finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Biography.
A landmark biography of Bach on the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, written by the leading Bach scholar of our age.
Although we have heard the music of J. S. Bach in countless performances and recordings, the composer himself still comes across only as an enigmatic figure in a single familiar portrait. As we mark the 250th anniversary of Bach's death, author Christoph Wolff presents a new picture that brings to life this towering figure of the Baroque era.
This engaging new biography portrays Bach as the living, breathing, and sometimes imperfect human being that he was, while bringing to bear all the advances of the last half-century of Bach scholarship. Wolff demonstrates the intimate connection between the composer's life and his music, showing how Bach's superb inventiveness pervaded his career as musician, composer, performer, scholar, and teacher. And throughout, we see Bach in the broader context of his time: its institutions, traditions, and influences. With this highly readable book, Wolff sets a new standard for Bach biography.
Christoph Wolff is William Powell Mason Professor of Music and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. He is the author of

German composer and keyboard player
J S Bach was a German composer and keyboard player. During his lifetime Bach was chiefly known for his masterful organ and harpsichord playing; his great genius as a composer was only really discovered in the 19th century. Bach wrote organ music, including choral preludes, preludes, fugues, and toccatas; orchestral and chamber works, including the Brandenburg Concertos ; and church music, including the St Matthew Passion . Noteworthy among the collections of his keyboard works The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Goldberg Variations

"Musette" by Johann Sebastian Bach
Riff Rundown
Difficulty: Intermediate Fingerpicking Basics To play this classical tune p ick the notes on the low E string and A string with your thumb, pick the notes on the D string with your 1st finger, pluck the notes in the G string with your 2nd finger, pluck on the B string with your 3rd finger, and pluck on the high E string with your 4th finger. Drop D Tuning This song is in drop D tuning. In drop D tuning the low E string is tuned down one whole step to D. This enables the guitarist to play power chords with a single finger. If your favorite band uses drop D tuning and you want to experiment with this tuning, by all means do so. What ever you do, don't learn the guitar in drop D tuning-you'll get all mixed up. To tune your guitar to drop D tuning, first make sure your tuned to standard tuning. Then you'll want to tune your low E string down two steps to D (we drop it down one step, hence the name). See the picture below. You can use the audio clip below to tune your low E string to D for drop D tuning. Main Theme Here it is at normal tempo of 180 bpm: Here it is a little slower:

Composers Biography Languages Johann Sebastian Bach Life Works Catalogue Photo Gallery ... Home Page Johann Sebastian Bach Life Johann Sebastian Bach (father of Carl Philip Emanuel Johann Christian and
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
) was the most significant member of the Bach dynasty of musicians. He excelled his forebears and contemporaries, but he did not always receive the respect he deserved in his own lifetime. In 1708 he was appointed court organist in Weimar where he composed most of his works for organ. In Leipzig he eventually took charge of the "University Collegium musicum" and occupied himself with the collection and publication of many of his earlier compositions. Despite widespread neglect for almost a century after his death, Bach is now regarded as one of the greatest of all composers and is still an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians. Johann Sebastian Bach Works The six Brandenburg Concertos, BWV 1046 - 1051, dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, feature a variety of forms and groups of instruments, while the four Orchestral Suites or Overtures, BWV 1066 - 1069, include the famous "Air on the G string", a late 19th century transcription of the "Air from the Suite in D major", BWV 1068. • Encarta® Online: Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750), German organist and composer of the baroque era, one of the greatest and most productive geniuses in the history of Western music. Bach was born in Eisenach, Thüringen, into a family that over seven generations produced at least 53 prominent musicians. His father, Johann Ambrosius, a town musician, was his first teacher. II Early Years Starting in 1700 Bach held various positions as a church chorister, a chamber orchestra violinist, and a church organist. In 1705 Bach studied for a brief time with renowned Danish-born German organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude and was greatly influenced by his organ music. In 1707 Bach became the organist of the Church of Saint Blasius in Mülhausen. The next year he went to Weimar as organist and violinist at the court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst, becoming concertmaster of the court orchestra in 1714. In Weimar he composed about 30 cantatas, wrote organ and harpsichord works, and began traveling throughout Germany as an organ virtuoso. III Later Years Bach moved to Leipzig in 1723 and spent the rest of his life there as musical director and choirmaster of Saint Thomas's church and church school. Of the 295 cantatas that he wrote in Leipzig, 202 survive. He also wrote the Passion of St. John, the Passion of St. Matthew, and the Mass in B Minor in Leipzig, as well as numerous keyboard pieces including the Goldberg Variations; Part II of the Well-Tempered Clavier; and the Art of the Fugue.
