"Even then, he was a compendium of classic comedy routines. He had memorized every Steve Martin and George Carlin album." The two became fast friends, as Mr. Azaria went from watching, in awe, as Mr. Platt played Pozzo in a Tufts production of "Waiting for Godot" to acting alongside him in numerous shows. The most memorable was probably a production of "The Merchant of Venice" ("Oliver played Shylock; I played Salerio," Mr. Azaria said) in which the costumes consisted of little more than Speedos.
