I’ll also introduce you to the team behind the tools and talk about where we’re going with these tools in the future. How It All Started At Microsoft, we work hard to optimize customer service and support by identifying CritSits, or "critical situations," when a customer needs urgent assistance to resolve a problem that is interrupting service to end-users and affecting important business operations. When a CritSit is initiated, a whole team of Microsoft personnel, from Microsoft Customer Service and Support, Microsoft Services, our consulting arm, account management, and product development, cooperate to get the customer up and running as soon as possible.

New Book Previews: Cormac McCarthy, Lydia Millet, Lisa Kusel, Avner Mandelman
One of the most anticipated books of the summer is Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men . The book will be out a week from Tuesday, and already it's pushing into Amazon's top 100. All spring there were reports of galleys (advance copies for reviewers) selling for a couple of hundred dollars on eBay. Rake's Progress posted a report from one of the lucky few who got their hands on the book early. Granted, this reader was posting to the Cormac McCarthy Society Web site, but still his review was glowing. Other glowing reviews have come in at PW and Booklist , and the newspaper book pages will weigh in soon. Perhaps most intriguing of all is the report that McCarthy, a notorious recluse, has given his first interview in 13 years, which will appear in the August issue of Vanity Fair Booklist's starred review of Lydia Millet's satirical novel Oh Pure and Radiant Heart compares the book to "Twain, Vonnegut, Murakami, and DeLillo." Not bad. The novel opens in 2003 with reincarnation of three of the creators of the atomic bomb. After taking stock of the current state of the world, these scientists decide to work for disarmament, but the American military isn't too keen on that idea. Though the premise seems a bit high concept

It’s been remarked before that, over the last several years, many practitioners of eai have become rather adept at unspooling good, solid recordings, that the language has settled in comfortably enough for many musicians to create unforced and natural performances. For myself, I’ve found this to be the case more with what you might called the Müller-end of the spectrum, that is, the smoother (I don’t mean this pejoratively), more tilted-toward-ambient area of improvisation. It seems to me to be more difficult to master the language as you get toward the gnarlier side of things—the harsher, less overtly cohesive music that might be found, for instance, in Sachiko M’s contact mic work. You tend to hear a lot of work where the dialogue is stilted; you want to hear it become second nature, like slang. The last track, the pair augmented to a trio, fares less well. A sense of busyness which had been avoided thus far creeps in here as well as a use of sound sources that come across as too obvious, such as sheets of metal, certain electronics and saxophone. Maybe it’s simply an overcrowding that occurred with the addition of Steele (though I can’t attribute any of the difficulties to sounds apparently originating on the laptop), maybe it’s just a less inspired performance. There’s a feeling of casting about for ideas that was absent earlier, the conversation meandering around aimlessly and eventually petering out. Not that there aren’t several individual events of interest, but the overall structure struck this listener as more haphazard than enjoyable random, if such distinctions can be made.
