AUTRY, GENE (1907–1998). Gene Autry, the movie star known as the "Singing Cowboy," was born Orvon Gene Autry in Tioga, Texas, on September 29, 1907. He was the first child of cattle rancher Delbert Autry. A few years after his birth, the family moved to Ravia, Oklahoma. At age five Gene began singing in the church choir where his grandfather was a minister. At age twelve he received his first guitar lessons from his mother on a guitar ordered through the Sears and Roebuck catalog. As a young man Autry was hired as a telegraph operator for the Frisco Railroad in Chelsea, Oklahoma. One evening in 1927, during Autry's shift, Will Rogers overheard the young telegraph operator singing and playing guitar. Rogers was so impressed that he suggested Autry move to New York and try to find work on radio. Autry heeded Rogers's advice but was unable to establish a successful radio career and soon returned to Oklahoma. Autry was billed as the "Oklahoma Yodeling Cowboy" on Tulsa radio station KVOO. In 1929 he signed his first record deal and returned to New York. Two years later he recorded his first hit, "That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine," which eventually sold a million copies. The recording set an industry record for sales and became part of the first album in history to go gold (500,000 units sold). The next year Autry married Ina Spivey, a schoolteacher from Oklahoma. In 1934 he began his Hollywood career as a singing cowboy in the western movie

Gene Autry: Salute to a savvy singing cowboy
I'm a sucker for a singing cowboy movie marathon, and Encore Westerns has a doozy lined up for the end of this month to commemorate what would have been Gene Autry's 100th birthday on Sept. 29. There's no better illustration of the kind of B-Western volume that Autry turned out for Republic Pictures in the 1940s and '50s than the fact that Encore can program a 100-hour marathon of his pics, to run from 8 p.m. on Sept. 28 to midnight on Oct. 2 without repeating a single pic, with the exception of the new half-hour docu "Gene Autry: White Hat, Silver Screen." (For the sked, click here.) Autry famously moved into TV production early on with his Flying A Prods. turning out an Autry-toplined show as well as oater-adventure skeins "The Range Rider," "Annie Oakley" and "Buffalo Bill Jr." Plus, he wrote the Christmas chestnut "Here Comes Santa Claus," specifically for the Hollywood Christmas Parade, in which he was a frequent participant. Autry, who died in 1998, was very much a local mogul when I was a kid, as the owner KTLA-TV Los

Well, Gene Autry was about as famous a Cowboy as you could possibly get. "The Singing Cowboy" he was called. And he did sing "Rudoph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" that we all love. But he was more than that to millions of kids. To them he was an icon of Saturday mornings and a force for Good on the Silver Screen.
When our heroes like Gene Autry disappeared from TV and the movies, then the Cap Gun industry was DOOMED!!! It took awhile to realize it, but finally we noticed that the kids who were playing with Cap Pistols were getting younger and younger, and companies that made the guns were making them smaller and smaller, for the younger set were not as discriminating as the older ones had been.
The next thing you knew, the Cap Gun companies were going out of business. Now they are antiques and some of us older folks are wondering, "why in the world didn't we take more care of those wonderful toys of yesteryear?"
Several different companies made Gene Autry Cap Guns, like Kenton, Buzz Henry, Leslie-Henry, Marx and Keyston Brothers. Maybe others...I'm sure you will tell me. And, of course, send me some wonderful photos!

72. My Years With Gene Autry And Melody Ranch.

My Years With
Mr. Autry And
Melody Ranch. By HENRY CROWELL
Special To The Old Town Newhall Gazette, March 27-29, 1997.
In the white trailer was Gene Autry's horse, Champion. I spotted the truck and trailer by the side of the road while on my way to the Iowa fairgrounds, where I was to do a matinee. Mr. Autry would be doing the evening performance. At the fairgrounds, the driver told Autry that I had helped him. Autry instructed Herb Green to go over and ask me if I would like to work with Autry on his road shows. I said yes. The year was 1949. At the time, I was doing a comedy trampoline act. Mrs. Ina Autry, Gene's first wife, and I became very good friends. She was a wonderful person, the kind who always kept her word. We became such good friends, in fact, that she often referred to me as their son. Mrs. Autry set up an office for me on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, complete with a special parking place. While doing personal appearances with Mr. Autry, I worked with and befriended such people as Carl Cotner, Johnny Bond, Merle Travis, Gayle Davis (who played Annie Oakley) and Hubert Castle, who did a wire act. I finished the season, and the next year I received a call asking if I would like to tour with Mr. Autry's show. The shows lasted several weeks, whenever Autry had the time to make his rare personal appearances. It was my job to entertain the audience with my trampoline act and get them in a happy frame of mind before the star of the show, their singing idol, took the stage.
