The Worldly Epitaphs of John Ashbery
Books Review of: A Worldly Country By SAM MUNSON
February 15, 2007 A D V E R T I S E M E N T A D V E R T I S E M E N T The most remarkable thing about John Ashbery's later poetry is its iron uniformity of style — a master's style, highly polished and difficult to penetrate. In "A Wordly Country" (Ecco, 76 pages, $23.95), Mr. Ashbery's latest book, his sly and discursive voice makes itself heard with unquestionable authority and a propulsive, off-kilter fluency once again. And once again it points out a central tension in his work — the clash between the elusive strangeness of his rhetoric and the conventionality of his philosophy. "A Worldly Country" opens with the title poem, an observation, in vaguely Audenesque couplets, of some tremendous but unspecified upheaval: … the great parade flooded avenue and byway
And turnip fields became just another highway… that recedes into the familiar and becalmed: One minute we were up to our necks in rebelliousness
And the next, peace had subdued the ranks of hellishness…

In Praise of John Ashbery
The ever alert Frank Wilson , vice president of the FIS, draws my attention to a strange little interview with John Ashbery . I interviewed Ashbery years ago. I asked him about the criticism that he was a poet who did not think. 'Well, I think I think, but I don't thinking thinking is what it is thought to be.' Here, in this New York Times interview, he is asked if he feels any nostalgia for the NY Bohemia of the fifties. 'I left the country in 1955,' he replies, 'and stayed away for 10 years, in France. So I missed out on a very crucial period. I am still trying to piece together things that happened while I was gone, like the Everly Brothers, for instance.' Anyway, this is just an excuse to say that this man has written some of the most beautiful English of our time and the music of poems like The Skaters and Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror as well as collections like Houseboat Days and Vermont Notebook runs through my head daily, making my world brighter, more astounding and easier to live in.
From Houseboat Days:
'The roar of time plunging unchecked through the sluices
Of the days.'

John Ashbery's Paradoxes and Oxymorons
This poem is concerned with language on a very plain level.
Look at it talking to you. You look out a window
Or pretend to fidget. You have it but you don't have it.
You miss it, it misses you. You miss each other.
This poem is sad because it wants to be yours, and cannot.
What's a plain level? It is that and other things,
Bringing a system of them into play. Play?
Well, actually, yes, but I consider play to be
A deeper outside thing, a dreamed role-pattern, As in the division of grace these long August days Without proof. Open-ended. And before you know It gets lost in the steam and chatter of typewriters. It has been played once more. I think you exist only To tease me into doing it, on your level, and then you aren't there. Or have adopted a different attitude. And the poem Has set me softely down beside you. The poem is you. Role Reversal If a poem were to address the reader directly instead of taking a usual narrative point of view, what would the poem say? John Ashbery's "Paradoxes and Oxymorons" answers this question directly and with frustration. At first glance, the poem seems a structured mass of words, simply constructed. However, a second look revels the poem's straightforward attempt to, ironically, reverse the roles of reader and speaker. Through its diction, it is a unique portrayal of a simple poem's reaching out to grab the reader's attention, eager to express that it is not merely a collection of words but intricately related to whoever peruses it. An attitude of regret is also apparent. The speakerexpresses concern in that he cannot control the reader's interpretation of the poem. Regardless of the speaker's intended message, the reader will evaluate as he will and, in effect, make the poem his own.

John Ashbery, A Worldly Country My mind occupied by something, I notice shoals of dry leaves rattled by the wind, upsurging and a voice like that of my mother says, though quiet will adhere to the reverse side, make its prerogatives known another day, same day. Any time soon paint, lock the padlocks, waive anything dire. That way, we think, it will keep for us and for a while. Other than that we sleep, nod like reeds at the edge of a pond. Those places left unplanted will be cultivated by another, by others. Looking back it will seem good. The majestic verandah. All the ships numbered. The hedges grazed like autumn, or a blight

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 2 items John Ashbery , born in 1928, American poet, playwright, and novelist, whose book Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror (1976) won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for poetry and the 1976 National Book Award for poetry. Influenced by surrealism , a 20th-century artistic and literary movement, Ashbery’s poetry is characterized by abstract, unconventional use of imagery and syntax. His verse often focuses on the act of writing and attempts to reveal the internal world of the poet, rejecting conventional realism. To challenge his readers’ preconceptions about poetry, Ashbery uses unexpected juxtapositions of evocative and incongruous imagery. Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York. He received his B.A. degree in 1949 from Harvard University and his M.A. degree in English literature in 1951 from Columbia University. While at Columbia, Ashbery established close literary friendships with several other poets, including Kenneth Koch, Frank O’Hara, and James Schuyler. This group—along with artists and musicians of their generation—later became known as the New York School.

    John Ashbery
Nathaniel Brooks for The New York Times Prolific and widely celebrated, John Ashbery has been a guiding force of contemporary poetry for most of his life. His first published work, "Some Trees," appeared in 1956, selected by W.H. Auden as part of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. Mr. Ashbery went on to write more than two dozen volumes of poetry, and win nearly every major award of letters, including a National Book Award, the Robert Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America, Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation fellowships, and the Pulitzer Prize (for his 1975 collection, "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror"). From 2001 to 2003 he was the poet laureate of New York State. Known for a post-modern writing style that can be simultaneously dense and funny, he was heavily influenced by artists like Jackson Pollack and Jasper Johns. Early in his career he worked as an art critic and an editor of "Art News," which gave him entree into the bohemian culture of the day. (Naturally, Warhol was an acquaintance.) Along with Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, Barbara Guest and Kenneth Koch, he was part of the New York School of poetry, which blossomed in the city in the '60s. Its hallmarks included notes of surrealism, sarcasm and ironyessential qualities for urban life. He also spent several years living in Europe, principally Paris.

A note about John Ashbery in Conversation with Mark Ford
At 20,000 words, this is one of the longest and most candid interviews John Ashbery has ever given. As well as the interview, the volume contains a career sketch, the most far-reaching bibliography of works by and about Ashbery presently available, two uncollected poems, approximately 20 pages of hitherto unpublished photographs, and a representative range of quotations from the poet's critics and reviewers.
A note on John Ashbery John Lawrence Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York, on July 28th 1927, the first son of Chester Frederick (a farmer) and Helen Ashbery (a biology teacher). He went to school in Rochester and in his home town of Sodus, and at the age of sixteen was sent as a boarder to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. After graduating from there, in 1945, he entered Harvard University, where he studied English.
Ashbery had been writing poetry since his schooldays, and while at Deerfield had even had two of his poems accepted by the prestigious magazine
