in conversation with John Tranter
New York City, May 1988
John Tranter: [ brief introduction ] John Tranter: ... I asked John Ashbery how he came to publish Some Trees , his first book, in 1956. John Ashbery:
I was going to mention The Tennis Court Oath , which was the second book you published. I think it interested a lot of readers because it was so hard to read. Would you like to talk about... (laughs) ... about how you came to write that... It antagonised a lot of readers.
Beryl of the Biplane . Ah... and the only idea, if there is one, in the poem, is that this poem contains a lot of things that can be found in Europe. But of course they can also be found anywhere else.
The Tennis Court Oath I was wondering if the fact that you were away from America and away from the magazines and reviewers and friends and so on, whether that may have had something to do with the fact that you felt you could go right out on a limb. What did the reviewers say about the book?
New York magazine, reviewed it for the Hudson Review A very unkind remark.

by John Ashbery In 1956 the Yale University Press published the collection Some Trees Some Trees continues to be regularly reprinted in English. Melcion Mateu Adrover, winner of the prestigious Octavio Paz Poetry Award (1998) and a contributing editor to TBR, recently translated Some Trees Some Trees These are amazing: each
Joining a neighbor, as though speech
Were a still performance.
Arranging by chance To meet as far this morning
From the world as agreeing
With it, you and I
Are suddenly what the trees try To tell us we are:
That their merely being there
Means something; that soon
We may touch, love, explain. And glad not to have invented Such comeliness, we are surrounded: A silence already filled with noises, A canvas on which emerges A chorus of smiles, a winter morning. Placed in a puzzling light, and moving, Our days put on such reticence These accents seem their own defense.

The Ashbery Resource Center (ARC), a project of The Flow Chart Foundation (FCF), is an archival and research facility affiliated with Bard College. As custodian of large portions of the John Ashbery archive and collections, FCF is coordinating the development of ARC in order to facilitate the identification, organization, documentation, maintenance, and preservation of these materials. ARC's objective is to make available to scholars and researchers a variety of resources relevant to the study of Ashbery's career, emphasizing the context in which his work is created in order to provide additional insight into its significance. One of ARC's most important tasks is the production of an annotated, searchable online catalogue of ARC's archive that will serve as a de facto bibliography of Ashbery's work. To learn more about ARC and its various projects, please visit the links in the navigation bar at left.
FCF is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to encourage the study of interrelationships among various art forms, as well as to facilitate awareness of the roles that an artist's environment can play in the creative process. Among FCF's goals is an exploration of these issues as they are revealed through the various environments that Ashbery creates. The engagement of Ashbery's own work with other literature, music, the visual and decorative arts, architecture, theater, and film both reflects and is reflected in his own created environments. These purposefully constructed poetic and physical spaces may be seen as exemplary paradigms for such inquiry. To learn more about FCF please visit:

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students should be encouraged to explore the connections between seemingly unrelated passages. These connections are probably best found if the student is encouraged to move freely through the poem at first, finding whatever connection he or she can spot. Richard Howard convincingly argues that each Ashbery poem contains an emblem for its entire meaning. If allowed time, students usually find such emblems. Second, drawing connections between Ashbery's method and such graphic methods as collage and assemblage often helps. Students, of course, should be reminded to read the notes. I have found it useful to present Ashbery in relation to the visual arts, in particular the shifting perspective of comic strips, the surprising juxtapositions of collage and assemblage, the vitality of abstract impressionism, and the metaphysical imagery of de Chirico.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
The selection highlights three major themes or questions running through Ashbery's work: (1) the problem of subjective identityWhose consciousness informs the poem? (2) the relationship between language and subjectivityWhose language do I speak or does the language have a mind of its own? (3) the connection between subjectivity, language, and placeWhat does it mean to be an American poet?

For all I know I was meant to be one of those marchers
the others, whose drab histrionics provoke unease to this day,

Alas, the happy ending and the tragic are alike doomed;
better to enter where the door is held open for you
with scarcely a soupçon of complaint, like salt in stew
or polite booing at a concert he took you to.
No longer shall the grasses weave quilts for our revenge
of lying down on, or a faint breeze stir milady’s bangs. What is attested is attested to. To flirt with other thangs, peacockish, would scare the road away. "The Voice of the Poet: John Ashbery"
The award-winning poet reads "Memories of Imperialism" and "The Underwriters." Pages 1 "Paradigms of common experience" is Ashbery's label for his own poems: the mind listening for its haphazard memories and unconcious desires while hearing the world's buzzing distractions. The task of his poetry remains constant to explore how we receive information and make meanings, then how those meanings are transformed. Pop culture and high romance go hand in hand. From the start of his career, Ashbery has been among the most innovative poets in the language, and he has kept his work open to both experiment and tradition. Listen to John Ashbery read "Memories of Imperialism" and "The Underwriters." Both are featured on the release dedicated to Ashbery in "The Voice of the Poet" series [Random House Audio], edited by J.D. McClatchy. Pages 1
