Film-maker Gregg Araki, born in Los Angeles, California, is an openly gay Japanese-Canadian independent filmmaker. Except for his first film, he has written and edited all of his features. Araki graduated USC School of Cinema-Television and worked as a music critic for L.A. Weekly. Shortly after the release of The Living End , Araki's stated age in interviews began to change anywhere from one to five years younger than his actual age. At one point, his given age would have him releasing his first film at age 23, while still in grad school. Press interviews conducted in 1991 or earlier contain his actual age. His work includes:
  • Three Bewildered People in the Night (1987) The Long Weekend (O'Despair) (1989) The Living End (1992) Totally F***ed Up (1993) The Doom Generation (1995) Nowhere (1997) Splendor (1999) This Is How the World Ends (2000- TV)

Araki, Gregg (b. 1959) Gregg Araki's films are direct responses to the "institutionalized homophobia " of media, politicians, and cultural watchdogs. The poster boy of radical and militant queer cinema, Araki disdains the ghettoizing label of "gay filmmaker" and denies being part of the New Queer Cinema. Sponsor Message.
Born to Japanese-American parents in Los Angeles in 1959, Araki grew up in Santa Barbara. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. in film history and criticism in 1982, Araki completed an M.F.A. in film production at the University of Southern California. Studying film history, he developed a love for screwball comedies, and their irrational, subversive narratives, as well as for road movies and Jean Luc Godard, a French New Wave filmmaker who regularly broke filmic codes. Scripting, photographing, editing, and producing his first four films, Araki polished the art of being a guerrilla filmmaker: someone who freely and spontaneously films anywhere and anytime with rudimentary equipment. He constantly dodged Los Angeles police in the streets for failing to have a shooting permit.

Is Gregg Araki's new film really "a more radical personal and political film than Oliver Stone could have managed in his wettest of wet dreams?" Matt Severson says so, and Araki agrees. page 1 of BY MATTHEW L. SEVERSON Gregg Araki's fifth feature is destined to provoke controversy. Ostensibly a road film in the ultraviolent mold of True Romance or Natural-Born Killers, The Doom Generation goes against the grain of these studio-manufactured postmodern genre pieces and transcends their ultimately conventional vision of pop-media hipness. Araki has made a more radical personal and political film than the bombastic Stone could have managed in his wettest of wet dreams. And he has captured the cultural apathy and violent dissolution of the present in a manner unseen since A Clockwork Orange.

Opening Words For an Araki Blogathon
Before writing about The Living End , which I am using as the starting off point for my exploration of the cinema of Gregg Araki (I'm thinking about wrapping it all up with his as-of-yet-unreleased Three Bewildered People in the Night which technically precedes The Living End I first encountered Gregg Araki through The Doom Generation . (And here I will display my absolute youthfulness) I was having a slumber party and it seemed an apt film to rent, given the yellow stickie tag affixed by the rental store, which read, "You must be 18 years or older to rent this movie!" I was but a wee middle schooler who found validation in Nine Inch Nails. I think I can honestly say I had no idea what to make of the movie upon my first viewing. Fucked up on something or other (or at least pretending to be, I don't really recall), I believe I thought it dreadful - what with the stilted acting and plodding plotline. It was too early on for irony to take full effect. And so, without a grain of salt, I took the film as true declaration. Oh dear. Again, with the home

Araki on set...note the T-shirt in the background While he was in town to support his fine new film Mysterious Skin , I got the chance to talk to writer/director Gregg Araki ( The Living End The Doom Generation ) on a Saturday afternoon prior to the final SIFF screening. I figured I would be lucky to get 15 minutes, but we ended up chatting for almost 40. I'll post just a few of his comments for now. When I can find the time, I promise to post more. Thanks to the SIFF press department for setting things up and to Mr. Araki for the generosity of his time. First, Araki and I talked about all the good press Mysterious Skin has been generating. It's his first adaptation and concerns two 18-year-old boys in Kansas, both of whom are dealing—in very different ways—with sexual abuse they suffered
as children. Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who views the relationship he had with
his Little League coach (Hal Hartley vet Bill Sage) as a love affair, has become a sociopathic hustler, while Brian (Brady Corbet) is a nerdy college student convinced he was abducted by aliens (he can't account for several hours from his eighth year).
The poster art It was hard for Araki to contain his enthusiasm for the way the film turned out
and the overwhelmingly positive response it's been receiving. That said, a lot of reviews have emphasized the differences between

    Gregg Araki: 'Mysterious Skin'
Margaret Pomeranz talks to director Gregg Araki , local Australian film distributors and Melbourne Film Festival director about the controversial new film 'Mysterious Skin'. Watch the Margaret Pomeranz interview (Requires RealPlayer Margaret: It's been a long time between films for the American director Gregg Araki. His latest, 'Mysterious Skin', deals with the sensitive subject matter of child sexual abuse. I talked to the director and some people who may be key to the film being shown in Australia.
GREGG ARAKI: It's about a subject that's very dark and a sort of taboo subject. But I think that it also, it is very, it's told in a very sort of poetic and sort of beautiful language that kind of transcends its subject matter. And I don't think that it has, I know that when we were working with the script, it's almost like the script was more disturbing than the movie, because the aesthetic surface of the film is so lush and kind of rich and beautiful that one of the actors, Joe Gordon-Levett, was saying he's all, "I could just watch it over and over again "because it's just like a dream." Like, it has this kind of dreamy, sort of elegant kind of quality to it. And I think that that, for me at least, make, softens the sort of harder, the tougher scenes in the movie.
