Julie Andrews
Born Julia Elizabeth Wells, on Oct. 1, 1935, at Walton-On-Thames in Surrey, England. Ever since she was eight, she sang in music halls and performed on stage. When she was 13, she sang for the Queen at the London Hippodrome. When she was 19, she stared in "The Boy Friend". The New York version of "The Boy Friend" ran for 485 performances. Andrews moved on to better things starring in "My Fair Lady", becoming the youngest actress ever to play the part of Eliza Doolittle professionally. Andrews also played Queen Guinevere in the musical "Camelot" in 1960. She made her screen debut in "Mary Poppins" in 1964. She won both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for this performance. In "The Sound Of Music", Andrews played the governess of 7 children who in the end falls in love with the childrens father, Captain Von Trapp. Another musical film which featured Andrews was "Thouroghly Modern Millie" made in 1967. Here she portrayed a young woman during the 1920's.
In 1959, she married set and costume designer, Tony Walton, which ended in a divorce in 1968. From that marriage she had one child, Emma Kate, the only of her children who aren't adopted. On Nov. 12, 1969, Andrews remarried director/producer Blake Edwards who already had two children, Amy Leigh and Joanna Lynn, both adopted. Between 1970 and 1986, Andrews appeared in many films including "Victor/Victoria", which was the first movie that landed her a starring role in the same play. The play started in 1995 and ended in 1997. It was the most attended play in Ney York City its whole run. Throughout the play, Andrews had many sicknesses, mainly in her throat. She just dealt with it by drinking tea and taking medicine. When the show was finished, she had surgery and was guarenteed her throat would heal, in fact it was supposed to be better.

Help Search Andrews, Julie (1935-) Actor Perhaps if she had been born ten years earlier Julie Andrews (born Julie Wells in Walton-on-Thames) might have had a career in British films, equally, though, she might not have become a world star. As it is, her film relationship to British cinema is marginal: The Americanization of Emily (US, d. Arthur Hiller, 1964) was made here, she played celebrated British stage star Gertrude Lawrence in the US-made, Star! (US, d. Robert Wise, 1968), and starred in The Tamarind Seed (US, d. Blake Edwards, 1974), Victor/Victoria (US, d, Edwards, 1982), and Relative Values (UK/US, d. Eric Styles, 2000), in Gladys Cooper 's old stage part. Theatre success in My Fair Lady took her to America, where she scored major hits with Mary Poppins (US, d. Robert Stevenson, 1964) and The Sound of Music (US, d. Robert Wise, 1965). It seems a shame that she, quintessentially English, has wasted herself on many feeble American films when she could have found feeble films at home - and 'home' needed her more. She was created DBE in 2000.

Born: October 1, 1935
Singer and actress Julie Andrews has long been famed for her perfect pitch and impressive vocal range. From her 1954 Broadway debut as Polly in "The Boy Friend," she has received rave reviews from critics and lasting devotion from music fans. Best known for her roles in stage and film musicals, including "My Fair Lady," THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and MARY POPPINS, Andrews has concentrated in later years on acting on the screen rather than singing, appearing in husband Blake Edwards' films, including S.O.B. and THAT'S LIFE.
Andrews had a somewhat unusual childhood. Born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935, at Walton-on-Thames, England, her parents divorced when she was very young. Her mother, a pianist, married Edward Andrews, who sang in music halls, and the child took her stepfather's last name. The newly made family traveled throughout England, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews performing for a living. Julie, as they called her, first began displaying her own considerable vocal talents during World War II, when she was about eight years old. While hiding in community air-raid shelters, Mr. Andrews led the frightened citizens in singing to keep spirits up. Mrs. Andrews began to notice that her daughter's voice often rose far above those of even the men and women; when examined by a doctor, Julie's vocal chords proved to have already developed to an adult level. As soon as they were able, the Andrewses provided their prodigy with professional singing lessons by Madame Stiles-Allen.
