Minister condemned for 'abuse of rights'
Jewel Topsfield Canberra
October 13, 2007
A FEDERAL Court judge has launched an extraordinary attack on Kevin Andrews over the involuntary removal of a man to New Zealand, claiming the Immigration Minister's behaviour had been "truly disgraceful". The Immigration Department yesterday removed Timothy John Borstrok from Australia, even though he had lodged an application to appeal to the Federal Court over a decision to cancel his visa on character grounds. Justice Margaret Stone said removing Mr Borstrok meant he had no effective right of appeal. "It is truly disgraceful for the minister to behave in this way," she said. "I think nothing can excuse this sort of flagrant abuse of an individual's rights." The judge's personal criticism of Mr Andrews comes after he was last week accused of inciting racial hatred against the Sudanese community after he linked a drastic reduction in the African refugee intake to a failure by the Sudanese to integrate.

Bad Rap, Badminton
While badminton is a minority sport in the United States it is widely played in the rest of the world. Around 1.1 billion people watched the Olympic badminton competition on television in 1992, even though it was the first time that it was demonstrated in the Olympics. In counties such as Malaysia it is common for crowds of 15,000 to view a badminton tournament (USA Badminton). Obviously the United States is missing out on something special when only 503 high school interscholastic badminton programs are available (Bischof). Badminton requires rapid hand-eye coordination, lightning quick reflexes and explosiveness to play. It also requires an open mind to see past the stereotypes and realize that badminton deserves respect as one of the world's finest sports, which it most certainly is. Abstract
Recent adjustments to the chronology of the northern Maya Lowlands have brought about a closer alignment of the decline of Terminal Classic/Early Postclassic Yucatecan polities with the collapse of the southern Maya states. The collapse of the entire Classic-period societal structure throughout the lowlands can now be compressed into a 200- or 250-year period and seen as a progressive chain of events that began in the south and culminated with the fall of Chichen Itza in the eleventh century. This new reconstruction has led us to propose eliminating the Early Postclassic period, the existence of which was based largely on a purportedly late occupation of Chichen Itza. We assign this final occupation of the Itza capital to the Terminal Classic period, which ended sometime in the eleventh century in the northern Maya Lowlands.
