Director’s ‘There Will Be Blood’ has won raves from critics and fans

Director Paul Thomas Anderson's new film "There Will Be Blood" doesn't obviously bear any of his normal style or exuberantly emotional characters. It's been hailed as one of the best American films of the year and a remarkable advancement for the young, maturing auteur.
NEW YORK - In the last conversation Paul Thomas Anderson had with Robert Altman, his friend and mentor told him: “I think this film is something different for you.” “It was so sweet,” Anderson recently recalled. “He had no reason to base it on anything except just a feeling.” Altman died in November 2006, a month before Anderson planned to show him a rough cut of “There Will Be Blood.” But Altman’s hunch turned out to be accurate. Anderson’s new movie stands apart from his first four films — “Sydney” (aka “Hard Eight”), “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia” and “Punch-Drunk Love.” And it’s been hailed as one of the year’s best films and a remarkable advancement for a maturing auteur.

Paul Thomas Anderson: Blood, Sweat and Tears
There Will be Blood director on making his masterpiece, and how baseball may have saved him By SCOTT FOUNDAS Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - 12:00 pm It could almost be a scene from a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, a dropped subplot from Magnolia Kevin Scanlon
(Click to enlarge) "I haven't gone very fucking far," Paul Thomas Anderson says with a boyish, self-deprecating grin. Neither, geographically speaking, have his movies. Though his debut feature, the crackerjack neo-noir Hard Eight (1997), ventured across the state line into Nevada, and Punch-Drunk Love (2002) made side trips to Utah and Hawaii, the heart of Anderson's work has always belonged to Southern California; which could be why Punch-Drunk Love Indeed, Anderson's fifth and latest feature was inspired by a bout of homesickness that hit the director while he stood in a London bookstore thumbing through a copy of Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel Oil!

In Paul Thomas Anderson's epic, oil is thicker than 'Blood'
'There Will Be Blood,' a story about the rise and fall of a robber baron, isn't the year's best film. But it's certainly the strangest – and compelling, at that.
By Peter Rainer from the January 4, 2008 edition E-mail Print Letter to the Editor Republish ... digg This feature requires a newer version of Macromedia Flash Player and javascript-enabled browser.
Film critic Peter Rainer gives his thoughts on "There Will Be Blood." Sprawling yet cramped, "There Will Be Blood" may not be the best movie of the year, but it's certainly the strangest. It evokes passing comparisons to everything from "Giant" to "Citizen Kane" but it's impossible to pigeonhole. Daniel Day-Lewis, in one of those toweringly eccentric performances of his – think of Bill the Butcher in "The Gangs of New York" – plays Daniel Plainview, an itinerant prospector who becomes a turn-of-the-century California oil baron. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and very loosely based on Upton Sinclair's novel "Oil!," the film encompasses 30 years in the life of a man who starts out mean and only gets meaner. By the end, he's so profoundly isolated by his misanthropy that he's deranged.

PopMatters Film and TV Editor
Magnolia reviews by Todd Ramlow and Cynthia Fuchs "It's a weeping movie." Paul Thomas Anderson describes his new film, Magnolia , in language that only seems simple. He's obviously excited about it, glad to have it released and to be talking about it, which, he observes, is part of the process. "I was exhausted when the movie was coming out in New York and LA, but then I took a couple of weeks off for the holidays and I was able to kind of get my juice back, and think, okay, I can do phone calls and talk show things. I try and balance it out. I mean, I don't want to be blabbermouth-young-white-director-guy, but I gotta help. You just don't want to get a disgusting sheen on yourself." Anderson sounds a little rushed, but more than that, he sounds at ease with himself and with this deranged business of film promotion. Since Magnolia is his second high-profile film in as many years (after Boogie Nights ), he knows what to expect, how to survive what he calls being "burned out," how to squeeze in breathing between phone interviews and sit-downs with Charlie Rose or Letterman.

TORONTO Maverick Hollywood filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson sips a fine white wine and gobbles down a plate of greasy french fries smothered in ketchup. He swears like a sailor on shore leave and is as sweet and good-natured as Bambi. We're sitting in a back room of the bar at the swank Toronto boutique hotel The Windsor Arms and Anderson, with his tousled hair and vaguely sleepy look, is dressed casually in battered jeans and a rumpled white shirt that probably has never been tucked into his pants.

It is 10 years since Paul Thomas Anderson first left audiences and critics dumbstruck and confounded with his breakthrough film Boogie Nights, when he was just 27. How could such a pipsqueak of a director, they asked back in 1997, create a masterpiece that wowed right from its opening sequence: an audacious five-minute tracking shot that swoops and swirls through the nightclub of the film's title in joyful synchronization to the dance music of the 1970s. He has astonished ever since. Magnolia, the next out of the blocks, was an even bigger, more complex and yet richly evocative film that belied any attempt to categorize it. He was 31 by then, but still people marveled at how one so young could conjure up such accomplished work. Anderson appeared to have found his style - the repertory film in which a multitude of characters and plot-lines are interwoven. But then in 2002 he bamboozled us again. He threw out the repertory technique and opted instead for a radically scaled-down and linear story in Punch-Drunk Love. It ran at a conventional 90 minutes - half the length of Magnolia - and though the film was anything but conventional, it left many fans delighted, others disappointed.
