BIO Laurie Halse Anderson grew up in Syracuse, New York, and now lives outside Philadelphia with her husband, two teenage daughters, and way too many books. SPEAK, nominated for the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, is her first novel. She is also the author of three picture books, NO TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY, TURKEY POX, and NDITO RUNS. INTERVIEW August 2005
Carol Fitzgerald and Marisa Emralino interviewed Laurie Halse Anderson , whose acclaimed novel SPEAK has been adapted into a movie that will air simultaneously on cable networks Showtime and Lifetime on Monday, September 5th. Laurie talks about the difficulties of translating books into film, the similarities and differences between the book and movie versions of SPEAK , and the importance of addressing serious issues in young adult fiction.
Teenreads.com: Were you involved in the writing or filming of the movie adaptation of SPEAK? Laurie Halse Anderson: Not really. The producers gave me the chance to work on the screenplay and I turned it down. I was deep into the writing of CATALYST and did not want to interrupt the story. I was on set for a few days of the filming. That was a blast. (Hint: a certain lunch lady bears a striking resemblance to me.)

School of the Arts (honorary) 2005 Laurie Anderson has crossed boundaries so effectively that she has become almost an institution of innovation. From breaking into the top 40 pop-charts as a performance artist to serving as the first artist-in-residence at NASA, Anderson consistently engages worldwide audiences with experimental work.
Mass audiences first encountered Anderson's work with "O Superman," 11 eerie minutes of techno-drone and spoken-word riffing that rose to the top of the British pop music charts in the early 1980s. In the decades that followed, Anderson continued to smudge the line between popular and avant-garde performance. She produced accessible albums such as Strange Angels and Mister Heartbreak , a top-100 record featuring rock star Peter Gabriel; she also produced complex performance pieces such as United States I-IV , an eight-hour, live collage of answering machine messages, violin music, and landscape slides set in the structure of classical opera. Whether pop or puzzling, however, Anderson's work is always sharp-witted. As John Rockwell commented in

artists (L) Real Name: Laura Anderson Profile: Laurie Anderson (Chicago, 5 June 1947) is an American performance artist and composer. Although she played the violin from childhood, she received her formal training in the visual arts. Her work has incorporated graphics, lighting, sculpture, mime, slides, film, speech, music and many electronics, some of her own design. By 1976, her performances were featured prominently in museums and concert venues across Europe and North America.
In 1981, Anderson's single O Superman reached number two on the British pop charts. Until then music had been only one of the media employed in her work. Anderson has achieved greater visibility than most composers of her generation, her unexpected crossover into the popular domain brought her a degree of fame usually unavailable to avant-garde artists.

It's going to take a while to think through all I experienced this weekend, but I wanted to post a couple of photos and say a few things while I am waiting for my ride to the airport.
(For those co-retreaters who asked me to post the final quote from my presentation this morning, I promise I'll do that tomorrow.)
Saturday started with author, illustrator, and editor strands/presentations, then a day filled with informal discussions about our craft and the creative life. We enjoyed a couple of hours of wonderful readings after dinner, then we bundled up and headed out in the snow
    to the bonfire.
I think everyone should have a bonfire with their friends once a month. At least. We roasted marshmallows, sang a lot of songs, and threw our wishes into the fire, then retired inside for more lively conversation until the wee hours of the morning.
In the red scarf, that's Linda Sue Park, then Tanya Lee Stone, and in the jaunty hat, Vera B. Williams.
