I can now reassure all fellow lovers of western romance that Anderson is back where she really belongs: writing some of the best, grittiest, and most intense stories that any of us could wish. Cherish is vintage Anderson. The west that Anderson recreates is not a pretty place. Rather (and accurately), it is violent and dangerous. As has been her wont in many of her books, the author introduces into this fearsome environment an innocent young woman. The heroine of Cherish is Rebecca Ann Morgan, a member of a strict religious sect (denominated "Bible thumpers" and "cheek turners" by most folks) who is traveling to Santa Fe with her family. The leaders of the Brethren, threatened by the encroachment of the secular world in Pennsylvania, have decided to move their community to the New Mexican frontier to protect their separate existence. While most of the community has already moved west, the group that the Morgans are traveling with has been charged with bringing west the money gained from the sale of their Pennsylvania land. This will allow the Brethren to pay for the land they have purchased and establish their new homes. The group is attacked by vicious outlaws and all are cruelly murdered, except for Rebecca. She survives because she was away from the group when the attack began and because Race Spencer arrives on the scene.

It would be simple enough to write a few paragraphs, sharing some of my thoughts about FOREVER AFTER and why the story is so special to me. Correct? Noooooo! When will I learn that, for me, nothing is ever simple? Some time ago I wrote the note to all of you and sent it in. And then I promptly began to bite my fingernails. Was the tone of my note too serious? I read the other Author of the Month articles, all of which were far better than mine, prompting me to gnaw off what was left of my fingernails and e-mail an urgent message to June, saying, "Trash the piece I just sent you. I'm afraid it's too grim and serious. I'll send you another one." Or something to that effect. So . . . here I am, at the keyboard again, this time with a scratchy feeling at the back of my throat—undoubtedly a bit of fingernail I accidentally swallowed. And what brilliant things have I in mind to say? Well . . . not much. I have concluded that I should probably stick to writing my books and let someone else tell you about them.

West Deptford Reader Reviews Year of Wonders : a novel of the plague by Geraldine Brooks Evergreen by Belva Plain Summer Breeze by Catherine Anderson Reviewed by Carolyn Wood Romance woven into this story through the relationship of Rachel Hollister, traumatized recluse, and Joseph Paxton, well-known, outgoing, single guy held my attention surprisingly well.  It was enjoyable to get caught up in this whirlwind romance that begins when two ornery loners are thrown together due to circumstances beyond their control. As predictable as it sounds, they belong together.  Uncovering the way they get together is the fun part! I have not read one romance novel over the past ten years and if it wasn’t for Tuesday Tea with a Twist , I still would not have read one.  Not much thought went into my selection, I just got lucky.  In fact, much thanks to the display folks at the Library for perching the book on display.  It was literally at my fingertips as I headed toward the stacks. (Who says product placement is only for retail operations?)  The book is worth the extra effort, even if you have to ask your librarian for assistance, search the online catalog or browse the book shelves of your Library. Thursday, June 28, 2007 Annie's Song by Catherine Anderson Spoilers Alert! This was my first ever Catherine Anderson book and it won't be the last. Wonderful, evocative, perceptive writing. Vivid characterizations and sense of place. The story took place in 1890s Oregon. Annie and Alex were wonderful characters. She was mistreated and misjudged by everyone, including her parents, who thought she wasn't right in the head, when she was actually deaf, caused by a childhood fever. Alex's scum of a brother raped Annie. When she became pregnant, Alex married her and soon fell in love with her. Alex was a worthy hero. Kind, patient and honourable. And he truly loved Annie. Annie was wonderful in her innocence, spontaneity and acceptance of her circumstances. In spite of all the wrongs done to her, she didn't turn hard or bitter. Conclusion: I was touched by this story. I will definitely read another Catherine Anderson book.
