Eagleton v. Amis v. Islam
By Dwight Garner Martin Amis (Isabel Fonseca) What does it mean to be an Islamophobe, and once we have that sorted out, is Martin Amis an exemplar of the species? Those are some the questions that have preoccupied London’s book world in the past weeks, after Terry Eagleton, a professor of English at Manchester University, accused Amis of having views comparable to those of a “British National Party thug.” An October piece in The Observer, written by Richard Lea, condensed the debate so far thusly The issue had died down in recent days, but Ronan Bennett, the author of the novel “Zugzwang,” published an opinion piece in the Guardian this week – its title is “Shame on Us” – that placed Amis’s remarks (if they are his remarks, exactly) in a broader context: And it is different for another reason. The views quoted by Eagleton first appeared last year, in an interview Amis gave to Ginny Dougary of the Times. That they passed with virtually no comment at the time says a great deal about the depoliticised state of intellectual debate in Britain. I don’t know whether I’m inclined to give Amis the benefit of the doubt about this “thought experiment.” But the debate that’s going on in the U.K. is surely one worth having.

By Bob Chaundy of the BBC's News Profiles Unit
It is a rare breed of English author who combines a showbiz-style stardom with a high reputation for serious literature. Martin Amis is among that breed. With his good looks, rakish past, beautiful wife, and business acumen, he is the rock star of English novelists. With the help of his agent Andrew "The Jackal" Wylie, he has benefited from hugely lucrative deals with publishers and film companies.
Martin Amis: a rare breed of writer
The serialisation alone of Experience, his book of memoirs, in the Guardian, is reported to have earned him around £100,000. No wonder he could afford to spend £20,000 having his teeth fixed. This financial success prompted some seemingly uncomplimentary remarks about him by his increasingly curmudgeonly father Kingsley Amis in recently-released letters to Philip Larkin, though friends have attributed these to Kingsley's ironic sense of humour. But Kingsley showed little enthusiasm for his son's books. "He couldn't get on with them, too elaborate, too worked at".

"EXPERIENCE", a memoir by the English writer, Martin Amis, portrays his famous novelist father, Kingsley Amis, with all the foibles and fears that the latter's life contained. Taking his cue from his father's words spoken after divorcing his second wife,"Well, it's all experience,...pity there had to be so much of it.", Martin Amis discloses details about his own life, including his divorce, leaving two young sons, the way his father left him and h...

Charles Highway approaches women in the same way he does his study of literature: systematically. He has binders full of observations, studies, and other ways in which he can bed women. In other words, he has made a study of the ways in which he can use women. But when he meets Rachel, just before he sits his exams to enter Oxford, he finds his plans secondary to his growing feelings for her. And luckily enough, she's attracted to him, too. As the fall pr...

Why I think Martin Amis is racist
by Sunny Hundal Since the debate over how brilliant Martin Amis is at current affairs commentary continues, via articles and letters again Should Amis be regarded as racist? How should the liberal-left approach such issues? This is what I want to explore.
For the uninitiated, Martin Amis was caught in this controversy when newspapers pointed out that a fellow professor at Manchester University, Terry Eagleton, had been quite scathing of comments he had made last year. Here is a quick summary . That was over a month ago. Last week Ronan Bennett waded in again, prompting a retaliation by Christopher Hitchens and a flurry of letters , mostly supporting Bennett. weighed in at the Guardian blog.
We can dispense with Amis’s polite fiction that he is talking about “Islamism”; there are just too many generalisations (”The impulse towards rational inquiry,” Amis wrote elsewhere, “is by now very weak in the rank and file of the Muslim male”), too many references to “them” and “us”. When he says, for example, “they” are gaining on “us” demographically, he is demonstrably not talking about “Islamists”. The danger of being overrun, outnumbered, outbred is a repugnant trope beloved of supremacists everywhere (it was used by the Evening Standard about “aliens” 100 years ago).

  • "Experience: A Memoir" by Martin Amis The renowned novelist opens up on the subject of his famously vile father, Sir Kingsley, and the $30,000 fortune he spent repairing his own famously vile teeth. By Andrew Roe Nonfiction Experience: A Memoir By Martin Amis Talk Miramax Books, 406 pages Martin Amis has been known as the bad boy of British letters for so long that it's easy to forget that last year he entered his sixth decade. At a pre-grandfatherly 51, he is that rare, endangered creature: a writer who makes headlines. And now the man who has been called "the best American writer England has ever produced" and "the Mick Jagger of literature" once again finds himself the subject of speculation and scrutiny: For the past month or so, the British press has been abuzz about the nearly simultaneous publication of "The Letters of Kingsley Amis" by Martin's famous father (author of "Lucky Jim" and the Booker Prize-winning "The Old Devils") and Martin's own much-anticipated memoir, "Experience."

Connected to wealthy American society, Martin has of late aired many reactionary beliefs. He's become a commentator on the Middle East and Islamism. He gave an interview in September 2006 in which he stated that:
Martin, in a Telegraph interview and in a letter to The Independent both published yesterday, asks for consideration of context with regard to these comments. He places emphasis on "There's a definite urge". He says in The Daily Telegraph that he was "describing an emotion" and in The Independent that he was conducting "a thought experiment". Martin says that the definite urge soon left him (in the former paper "within a few hours, in my case" and "a day or two" in the latter). He might well also have been describing an emotion last year when he said of Islamists:

Margaret Drabble wrote in 1976 in the New York Times Book Review that 'Dead Babies' was '...about the nature of civilization, and the world it portrays is quite extraodinarily repulsive....a satiric book, written by a puritan, who, like that other satirist Swift, is deeply repelled by the normal functions of the human body as well as the more abnormal ones. Does it work, as a satire? On balance, it is probably too extreme, and its targets both too many and not sufficiently serious....Moreover, it is not at all funny. Its characters are so uniformly unpleasant that they are hard to distinguish. .. . It must be said that this book in its way is memorable. One might want to forget it, but it won't be easy." As I recall it was pretty funny. It is now grouped with Houellebecq's brilliant 'Atomised' ('Les Particules Elementaires') - a zeitgeist piece, an assault on the values of the Sixties and their disastrous effects etc.,
In the background of the novel is a shadowy terrorist group committed to murderous gestures - the Conceptualists. The book was filmed with Paul Bettany in 2000 (rated by some, hated by many, liked by Amis) with the group transmogrified into internet anarchists. Publisher's found the title distasteful and it was re-issued in paperback as 'Dark Secrets' but has since reverted to 'Dead Babies' a reference to outmoded and antiquated values and ideas.
